Steam security issue revealed personal info to other users on XMas Day (fixed)

I recently got a pre-paid CC just for Steam, PSN and so on. People were laughing at me saying that I'm paranoid. I added the CC as a payment option to Steam about 3-4 hours ago, had dinner, came back, saw this thread, checked my CC:

Guess who is laughing now.

Do you own the bought game on your account or was it gifted?

My steam is always logged in. Am I fucked

If you have not viewed any of your own private data today on Steam (prior to the fix*, which has gone out), then it is impossible for any of your private data to have been seen by anyone else.

If you did view any of your private data today on Steam, then that data was cached and may have possibly been viewed by a random** person. That data includes your e-mail address, name, phone number, and possibly your censored payment information.

*There's no guarantee that the issue has been completely fixed, so I don't suggest viewing any of your private Steam data until further notice. This includes staying away from the checkout pages. Staying logged in is fine.

**Who was able to view your cached page isn't actually random, but it's a little complicated to explain, and I don't know how Steam does things internally, so yeah.

Actually I don't even care for the money I got in steam, I'm more concern of the info that could have been visible to others, even that I dont use paypal or credit cards now, but I did a long ago.

Apologies but I don't really understand caching but I tried to log in to my account a couple of hours ago when it all started and couldn't get as far as ever viewing my own information. I seen my own log in name but when I went to go further another account information was shown. I never physically seen my own email address etc, does this mean my account info wasn't cached?

After alot of struggle, I can finally go inside my account details.
My CC infos are not there.
It seems they have been deleted by default. probably as 'emergency measure', while my purchase history is still... mine. :D
Fiuuu.

When you get a chance (and if you feel it's safe to), can you please log on and look at your purchase history. Does it show a purchase made?

“It’s meant that training people in third-party has taken longer than we expected,” explained Johnson. “It bugs us, but it is what it is. We think we’ll have the support wait time down to an acceptable point by Christmas time. That’s our goal. It’s a function of training up more and more people answer customer issues. We’re not there yet. It’s getting better internally; it’s just that it hasn’t yet translated to great support for users. We’re gonna get there, though.”

I guess it is time to find out if they actually met their set date for this.

Jesus Christ I'm screwed
I have a Steam account from years back, but it's using my girlfriend's gmail, and because I don't remember her login, it won't let me connect (as I need a code sent to her gmail)
I have no idea whether I left my credit card info on there or not, but I tend to fuck everything up so I probably did
I really hope I don't get a Christmas "present"

I don't know who's laughing.

But I'm wondering, did you look at your purchase history? Did they gift a game or did they buy something on your account.

Last question: if they bought a game for you, is it good?

What's this Steamgames.com website?

The total silence from Valve is not making them look that great here. Especially when the dirty laundry is still in front of everyone's eyes, in the form of cached search pages.

Nope its not, just used ccleaner and clear evertything through chrome...still showing a mexican guy page

Yeah, the poor guy is a living example of Valve's failure.

Do you receive messages if someone (you) changes something important in your account (like deleting payment information)? I've logged into my account and I can see that there's no CC info stored there even though I used to use Visa payments before. Now I'm not sure whether I deleted those info once I started using PayPal (thankfully I've never saved PP info in Steam) or if someone deleted it for me during the Steam fuckup.

You should be safe if you haven't logged in for a while, since apparently the only pages showing up are people who checked their details, which was cached, and then 'viewable' by others.

So intered my steam account, becuase fuck valve, im not waiting for them to give a response in a "few" days, and unlinkied my cc account.

Tried to see what info you could see. It only shows my last 4 phone numbers, and same with the cc number before I unlinked.
They only thing they could see in full was my email and knowing my country.

I can't see anybody figuring out my stuff with only my name, address and phone number, so not all too worried. Maybe if it displayed my birthday for some reason as well.

That wasn't the argument at all. It was a question of one thing being more important than another.
Real life personal information is more important than a few games. You can't "un-leak" the information. On the other hand you will regain access to the games and i assume all transactions will be reversed when everything is fixed.
So when comparing temporary loss of access to games vs the information leak. The leak is the more important of the two.

Except we did. Nice try though.

I guess only disclosing 1 out of 3 extremely personal things isn't too bad. Bravo Valve!

So you cant give me anything after saying that i've been misleading people this entire thread?
Give me something or stop posting crap.

Just today I was contemplating going all-digital. I didn't include risk of identy theft in my list of counter arguments yet. Save the future of my hobby, GOG.com!

I'm not saying what happened isn't bad, but what I am saying is some individuals are going on the extreme hate valve spree. They're just as bad as the apologists.

Also in the UK were had that many data breach leaks, everyone knows everyone now lol.
Who are you talking about? I'm only seeing people who are pissed that Valve gave their details out to a bunch of random people. It really shouldn't have happened.

To the bolded, it's cost those companies multiple millions to set it right.

My $2.08 wallet's still there, deleted my CC just in case.

I never did put my phone number in there, no matter how many e-mails and add mobile pop-ups Steam would give me. So I guess only (if that can be considered an "only") e-mail and name were seen, if they were at all.

On your Steam profile page, next to your name, there's a little arrow with opens a drop down menu with all your previous screen names. Is there any way to clear this? My account name is one of them, and I know I'm probably being a tad paranoid, but I'd love to see it removed.

....I know, that was the point I made two pages ago when the argument of importance was brought up and two people missed the obvious sarcasm I used.

Oh no! Any purchase made by someone else will be credited back to your bank account or credit card and Valve will fix your account. Not a big deal.

No way to remove it. You have to fill it up with other names to 'hide' it.
