Final Fantasy IX coming to PC & Smartphones

I mean FF XI really cemented Final Fantasy's place on the PC market. Same with ARR:FFXIV.

Playing FF on phones from Polygonal era and up is what doesn't feel right in my opinion. Though you can't blame SE for putting out all their games on phones, I'm sure they are happy with their sale's performance. Especially in Japan.

XI and IX are, imo, two of the most similar Final Fantasy mainline games too. Similar, folk fantasy/fairy tale/steam punk aesthetic. Warring cities, airships everywhere. An unbalanced and largely unstructured combat system, leading people to try to deviate from any obvious cookie cutter setups. Quirky, filled with minigames, gameplay quirks, funny NPCs, interesting landmarks and area design. They're the pinnacle of the entire franchise and what it should have grown to embody.

I haven't cared much about 7, 8, 10. But IX fits right up there with XI on the PC. They're like sister games to me, one being a game designed for a console experience and the other the MMO equivalent.

I wonder if this one will get retranslated or not. It's been a long time but I don't recall the translation being bad for IX.

While FFIX is my favorite FF title, I can't say that I'm super excited about a port honestly. I would say bring on the remake, but I don't think I want it to get the FFVII treatment either.

Now, a cel-shaded FFIX with some minor tweaks (like speed) I'd pay $40-$50 for. I don't expect it to happen though. I also want a FFXI-2 MMO, just FFXI with that same ol' EQ style but with modern graphics. I think don't think what I want and what SE has/is/will be doing could be further apart though. I don't expect to ever get what I want out of FF, and it stopped happening after FFIX as a matter of fact.

Hey, cool. :)

FFIX and FFXI are, by far, my two favorite FF games. I never tried to connect the two or really consider why though.

Retranslation, doubtful. Correcting the few errors in the existing translation, probable (not that there are many to begin with).

It's almost 2016 so it's about time you accept the truth!
generic you say

Man that trailer was a nostalgia rush. Melodies of Life is so underrated. This is a day 1 buy for me on Android and I'll probably double dip to have the psx collection all on PC.

And Square is continuing to kill it lately. Just give the fans what they want! No other company has the catalog to get away with it like SE does, take advantage of it.

Great news! Even from the bit of it I played on PCSX emulator it made the textures really pop. Some of the details that are blurry on original hardware look fantastic in the same way that FF XII on an emulator did as well.

lmao.

I find the complaints about FFIX being "generic" odd. I mean, it's obvious the game takes from high fantasy tropes and archetypes, but it does so in a very self aware way, and they subsequently develop those characters to be far more unique.

Anyone who thinks Vivi's character is generic (especially for a game) clearly hasn't played it.

Sigh I love so much about the game, and yet, i just can't get into it.

The music, the battle system, the old school prerendered background, it's wonderful.

But HOLY SHIT, I've never seen character designs ruin a game for me more than FFIX.
Vivi was pretty iconic, but other than that, it felt like controlling a bunch of visually unappealing weirdos.

The best FF on a PlayStation console, hands down.

Can't wait.

VII and VIII aren't on Android are they?

VIII isn't for any smartphone yet if you don't count Triple Triad. Since VII is the most popular FF I think Apple has an exclusivity agreement with Square-Enix, they could care less about the others.

As long as the PC version doesn't use a garbage smartphone interface like, well, most of the PC ports they've done recently, I'm all in. The trailer did nothing to assuage those fears but I'll choose to be hopeful.

I remember being a little bothered by Eiko's crotchless pants.
"Bothered" meaning confused and uneasy. It was the first time I had encountered a weirdly sexualized chibi design.

I hope the port does not force cropped widescreen... It is a visually stunning game. That art does not deserve to be lost.

If their release strategy is similar to PC, they want to drip feed them so they all have at least a month or so to sell.

Makes sense. I'm just curious if what i read on gaf was just bunk about all numbered ff coming to ps4. Having them all on one console would be pretty cool!

But yeah this is insta bought on both mobile and pc regardless.

This is fantastic, and unexpected. The "high speed" mode really, really makes me excited.

Please execute this well SE. I will double dip!

Looking forward to the pc release of this

Did the speedboost work pretty well in other games?

I didnt care about the speed boost when they announced it but within 60 seconds it became my favorite feature of the new FF7. I was mostly excited for the trophies.

The speed boost, trophies, and higher resolution make a big difference.

It's a specific PS1 problem, so unless it's running in emulator it'll be fine.

FF7 and FF8 on PC never had the problem compared to their PS1 versions.

Understood..it was the lack of Z-buffer. I basically want to know whether people think this is just going to be an emulation. But seeing as how the menu has changed, it looks like it's going to be a genuine port.

*shrug* They reminded me of stuff from my own childhood, bizarre and colorful and imaginative. They didn't have to look "cool"... just whimsical and magical.

I can certainly see IX's artstyle not being for everyone, but taste is very subjective. Just because something doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it isn't going to appeal to a lot of other people.

Personally, I rather like the artstyle. It has a lot of color and personality that is often missing from a lot of games.

This is the one FF game on the PS1 I never played; for some reason in my memory I had thought this was a sprite-based throwback. Probably would be better if it was; those 3D models have not aged well, being in-between the charmingly primitive models of FF7 and 8, and the PS2 models of FF10 and 12.

Awesome! I've been wanting to replay this game for a while.

I love that so many FFs are now easily available through PC. Shame that some of the ports are crappy though.

They must have found the source code on a tape somewhere.

Wonder if the speedrunning community for this game will start using this version.

They aren't so bad in game. The models actually scale up reasonably well from what i've seen of higher resolution emulation of the original

I have wanted this for so long. High speed mode is a game changer. Super excited that I'll be playing FF9 again soon!

That the cast of FFIX had its share of weirdos is one of the things I love about it.

But on the topic of SE's release schedule, in some ways, this is the closest we've come to reliving the golden age when we had VII-X in quick succession. We're going to get XV next year, VII:R possibly in 2017, throughout we're going to see VIII-X making appearances on various systems, and we're very likely to see XII get a proper remaster.

There was a long stretch of time where FF was characterized by Toriyama, misuse of the IP (All The Bravest), massive failure (original XIV), and lots of waiting. Now there's actually a lot to look forward to, and the franchise is a source of happiness again. SE has gone a long way toward rejuvenating the brand over the past couple of years.

The biggest difference being how nostalgia driven this new era of FF is. It's not even close to being the source of generation defining games it used to be. ARR was a good first step, but SE still has a lot to prove with XV and VII:R.

Interested in this "high speed mode." It's probably my fav FF but the battles are WAY too slow by today's standards.
