The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Cool thread, so I really suck and need someone to help me "git gud". I know my problems are that I don't hit the training room long enough and also mind game is weak. Would like a mentor if any one is nice enought to help. BTW it's for usf4. I am getting sf5 and planning to put some serious time into it when it comes so I don't even know if it's worth taking the time to really learn usf4.

Learning SFIV will help with SFV.

Don't forget to tell your region.

So we've been running an online tournament series called Biiruken since last April. This is mostly a very local thing: we wanted to organize tournaments for Finns since Finland is a pretty huge country in comparison to how many people live there (it's the 7th largest country in Europe in terms of area while being one of the least populous countries at the same time). Which means that there are only one or two tournaments a year where we have most of our good players playing. So the idea is to have a tournament every other week where you get to learn a bit of the tournament mindset.

We're on a break currently but for next year we have a roadmap for:
- shorter seasons with rewards
- match analyses between tournament weeks

I already did one match analysis from our earlier tournaments. It's in Finnish but it does have English subs to go with it.

Now for the future I'm going to be doing these in English. For one, it's a pain in the ass to sub thing and the other thing is that we're commentating our tournaments in English anyway, so in the end while I'd like to do this project in Finnish, I also kind of feel that's pointless at the same time.

I also have a tutorial series planned for this year but more on that in a few weeks once I got some video material recorded.

Try to imitate and record what you see Bison players do with the CPU in training mode and see if anything works.
I could save him the trouble. Ryu's cr. MK beats devil reverse, standing HK, standing MK, headstomp follow up. Whiffed devil reverse is punished by ultra 1, you'd be surprised how many can be punished by sweep.

You can link cr.mk after m. Axe kick?

What I did was cl.hp, m axe kick, red focus, cr mk, ex tatsu, ultra

No, you cannot. What you do is cl. hp xx mk axe kick > cr mp(1 frame link)/cr lp(2 frame link) xx ex tatsu > ultra 2.

To play Evil Ryu well you gotta be good at meter management and that combo you described isn't really worth the 4 bars. If you wanna do red focus into ultra just do cl hp xx mk axe kick > red focus > dash > ultra 2 it'll probably do the same amount, if not more, damage because it'll play the full animation(and you can do that midscreen).

SUB'D

I need to step up my level of play. Every time I play smash feel like a a rag doll toss around like a basketball. when the match starts my feet never touch the ground

I'm having trouble with tekken 6, tag team, SFIV, skull girls and Injustice.

I would love to hold my own with fighting games.

1 and 2 framers huh? Damn. I'll work on it.

Is there anything that works after the divekick?

Eh, no bites in in Community, so I might as well ask here too. Anyone interested in playing BBCPEX? Though I'm not a beginner, this would be the first I've played against actual players since CS II.

Guilty Gear Xrd Room:

02 North America District 1A(New England)#02

Room is named Karsticles.
Password is gaf.

FYI, I put rematch on because I hate waiting for another shot after a loss.

As someone who plays Evil Ryu and spams the dive kick more often than I should, it depends how deep the dive kick hits. If you do it meaty after a knockdown you can follow up with his slower normals like cl. HP. If you hit them low around their legs or crouching you can normally hit a 3 or 4f normal. For medium height or shorter characters if you hit them around the back of their head around their neck then you can follow up with a 3f attack. Careful though, depending on where you hit your opponent you will have to use different combos. Hitting near their feet will not leave you close to your opponent so maybe just cr. LP, st. MP, LK axe kick or HK tatsu will work. Not being able to identify these ranges quickly will cause your normal or special to whiff.

Another thing people need to be mindful of is try to explain some of the more esoteric terms such as 'meaty' and p-linking and other things as well. Not everybody has that vocabulary built up.

Looking for someone to help with any fighting game really, I play KI, skullgirls, USF4, DOA5 and KOFXIII and I suck at all of them unfortunately. Have 600 hours in USF4 aswell. In Australia btw.

Where are the Guilty Gear people? I only have the game on Steam, though.

Then should the OP be edited to have some definitions? "Meaty" is such a ridiculous word, no one would guess what it means.

Would that be a good example of how to p link?

It's different with someone like yun right? I was getting some good stuff after divekick with him but he's centered around it I guess

I find 90% of the fighting games terminology silly, just as bad as the counterstrike terms. Wow terms however are a special level of silly.

It should look like this:

You press the button you want to come out and then you press a lower priority button really quickly afterwards, for example you press mk then quickly press lk.

Will take 2-4 months for stick to click. Keep at it, as I said I see there is no difference using either. It's all legacy stuff. I only buggered with stick because I play Juri and that is one of the edge cases where it could be minorly helpful.

This ain't my stick. :p I have to buy my own. When I get mine I'm going to be playing 2d shooters, beat em up, and platformers in tandem with my fighters to speed up getting used to it.

I don't think his dive kick has more hit stun, but he has 3 different versions that lets him go in at different angles with very little push off on block or hit. But yeah, his game is more focused around his dive kick. Learning which one to use at which time is a key part of his game.

You need to be really sure to get diagonals on stick. And dashing while facing your "bad side" can be a persistent problem. It is for me, at least.

The worst part about Counter-Strike terms is that some of them are based on objects and locations that are no longer even present in CSGO.

One of these days I'm going to try and figure out who coined "option select," and what the hell they were on at the time.

The logic on their terms and the wow pvp terms is very crazy to me.

AFAIK it's an Engrish term from the VF1/VF2 days that was used as is.

The same way we have things like "okizeme" and "kara cancel" in the FGC vocabulary.

I won a fight with stick as Chun. Granted the guy isn't good but he whipped my ass before because I can't fucking play with stick. I just stick to the fundamentals.

I got about six wins tonight with a stick. Against good players too.

Felt good.

Playing other fighters really does help you get better. I'm fighting half of my inputs and still won half of my fights tonight even without the controller I use at home.

Such as?

I haven't bothered with the HRAP 4 and modded 360+ sticks I have sitting here because they just don't feel comfortable to hold. I can "wine-glass" them, but even that on the HRAP 4 feels like the stick is too short for my hands to really "sit under" and be able to do motions with.

Dragonlife didn't get Xrd, really? :/ I figured you two would be peas in a pod on that given your TF2-buddy-buddyness.

How do you deal with Milla in Xrd anyway? I've only played one but I've seen plenty of top players use her and she seems just as fast as Chipp with even faster mixups (though no teleports, obviously).

He's probably broke, as usual. Spent all his money on Smash Bros. DLC and building a Bayonetta shrine :^)
Snacks, what kind of pea in a pod are you? My PC was pooping itself. No point in buying games if it seemed like I needed to buy a new one/new parts.

But I'm perpetually broke, yes :^)
