Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Steam pre-order is LIVE

As somesone who's playing this for the first time is this gonna feel like cheating? :x
no. Use as needed

There is something endearing about being forced to travel long distances on foot for a little bit (especially at night), but by your 2nd or 3rd trek towards bluemoon tower it can become tedious in a hurry

I have the game pre-loaded. But I'll be honest, I love DD so much that I've never been more tempted to pirate the game just so I can play it.

But I'd probably just end up trying to make Geralt again... and failing.

So Pawns.

I read a thing that says if I keep my pawn the same vocation as me, it'll learn from me, and act like me. Is this advisable? What kinds of pawns are generally handy, apart from a support healer?

The fact that you only get one shot at creating your pawn for most of the game is making me unhappy, cause now I need to do it right the first time.

They can learn from you and from others, yes. They'll use certain strategies against specific enemies as they see them performed. If you mean model design, you can tweak your Pawn's (and your own Arisen's) appearance and Pawn inclinations through in game items, so it's not a one shot.

This post from earlier has some good links for pawn strategies/inclinations:

Lifted from the /vg/ thread. Also, Dangan replacement is already a thing, thank goodness.

You can change your pawn's class once you hit level 10, same as your own, so you don't need to stress out about it really.

If you really want to micromanage your pawns, they will use skills they see you or other pawns use most. For example, there's an earlier warrior ability where they place their shield on their head and act as a platform to spring you up, which is useful on large enemies. Generally just assigning the skill, they might not use it very much. If they see you use it or another pawn use it, they learn about it and start using it more frequently. That isn't to say you need to do that for a lot of skills, but situational ones like that can be annoying to get the pawns to use.

I don't remember how fast travel works, can anyone explain?

A few major areas are fast travel points and you use ferrystones to travel between them. You can create cutstom fast travel points by obtaining port crystals and placing them somewhere, but they are limited in number.

I liked how the fast travel worked in this game quite a bit actually, along with the whole weight and inventory system. Every outing felt like a grand adventure and coming back to Gran Soren with its music was just a fantastic feeling.
I agree, I appreciated the console version's fast travel too. I understand why people might dislike it, but making it a gameplay element you have to work (very little) towards made it more satisfying to me. Then again I do have a bit of wanderlust in games like these so I was never dying for fast travel either.

Do you mean Life Arisen? I think that preset looks terrific.

Yes, at first it looks nice.
However after a few glances it's too dark for my liking, and crushed black everywhere (especially on shadows).

Anyway, I actually could use it as the base and alter the source of the blackness.
Or perhaps I'll just wait until the 15th, there'll be more presets ready by then.

Just Pre-Ordered whilst sitting in a bar in Auckland, New Zealand...wasn't aware I was getting the best deal on earth, now it's double satisfying!

How important is online component in DD? Like Dark Souls?
There's no actual real-time multiplayer and the main use of online is having access to community created Pawns. If you're offline there's a fair share of stock Pawns available as well, though I can't say how good these are. There's some online postgame stuff too but that'd be too spoilery to discuss and not that significant either. And that has an offline alternative as well.

Kinda. Your main pawn, your core AI partner, grows over the course of the game and learns new details about quests, locations, and strategies to defeat monsters. You can recruit other pawns made by other players online, and they'll quest with you and learn from your exploits, while sharing details and using strategies they've learned on their own. Of course, your own AI pawn can learn from other players' exploits too, and when you rest at an inn, they'll tell you about their adventures with others and demonstrate their knowledge while in the field. It's pretty cool stuff, but nothing quite like Dark Souls. There's no invasions from others players, if that's what you're thinking.

You can play the game just fine offline. You'd have plenty of present pawns of varying levels to choose from. But it's not the same as teaming up with player made pawns.

I'd be tempted if I didn't have a really busy week ahead of me. A week where I'll find little time to play Dragon's Dogma.

Renting pawns, trading item, and battling the online version of
ur-dragon
(for exclusive loots).

However, I don't know how will they handle online ur-dragon on steam version, as it'll have longer legs than consoles. Imagine how strong the ur-dragon on PC is in 2020 or later. Online ur-dragon is like a mobile games boss event, if you get what I mean.

Edit: spoilers

The boss eventually caps out even on the console versions. I assume that limit is still in place.

To those that tested the leaked version what is the keyboard and mouse gameplay like? I've played it a lot on PS3 so I know how it is with a controller so just wondering if it'll still be better to play with a controller on PC.

Really want to play this but I don't have strong PC, only decent laptop. My laptop specs:
Core i5-4200U 1.60GHz
RAM 6GB
Geforce 750M
Is it ok to run it at 60fps and low settings?

Yeah.

It's fine, once you remap a bit. A multi button mouse seems to be really handy for the quick skills. Bow use really shines with a mouse, as the game doesn't artificially slow your aiming to simulate a controller.

Only annoying bits I've noticed so far is that the escape key and arrow keys seem to feature in some menus, despite what your movement keys are.

That sounds amazing. I'm kind of afraid the regular combat will still feel better to me with controller (that's what it was designed for after all) but I might switch when playing a ranged class. Control switch works automagically, right? As in, once you press a button on either input the prompts and the like change to the most recently used one.

is this game more fun as a melee? I usually play mages but to me it looks like climbing monsters is one of the games most fun features

I haven't tried that yet.

So for those testing the game, can you confirm whether or not i can have multiple characters if i have 3 or 4 accounts within a family sharing? Its literally the only thing keeping me from pre-ordering the game right now.

Yes, that was confirmed some time ago by Wabacom.

Anyway, correct...the game accepts input from both mouse/keyboard and game controller at the same time. For example, I play with an Xbox One controller but have a keyboard handy so I can use the item hotkeys. Very handy and seamless especially in the heat of combat.

Or you can keep the controller connected but put it down and go straight KB+M.

Bless you (or whoever's responsible) for that. I probably won't use the mouse or keyboard at all, but I might bind some hotkeys on it if I run out of controller mappings for various items.

The lack of simultaneous inputs ruined TW2 on PC for me. Using the controller to navigate a clearly designed-for-mouse menu was really clunky, but I can't play m/kb in general so I used a controller anyway and... yeah. Eww.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to map the item hotkeys to a couple of buttons on the controller (or maybe some button combos)? It's one of my main gripes with the game, the access of health & stamina items through the menu. I love DD, but this one thing would have made the game a bit more user friendly for me personally.

Uh? Of course. Every single Steam game that works with family sharing has different saves for each account. That's just how family sharing works.

It is our understanding that the game can run fine on most low spec pc or laptops
You could get the game from steam for example and test it for an hour or so
If the game runs well for you it'll b money well spent otherwise u can refund any ateam u played less than 2 hours of

You can technically do this yourself with a bunch of programs. Been too long so I don't really remember what the buttons were used for in the game, I think R1/L1 were for each weapon skills with like 3face buttons, but don't remember if R2 and L2 were used for anything. Could probably bind Select as a toggle or whatever though, or rebind some of the pawn controls on the D pad to items instead since pawn control wasn't necessarily useful(and can put pawn control stuff on a keyboard, or on select toggle or something of the sort).
