Valkyria Azure Revolution Extended Trailer [Soriku-approved topics only]

Yeah, this. Masamune Shirow of Ghost in the Shell, Yuji Himukai of Etrian Odyssey, Tony Taka who does Shining now, the Megaman Zero guy, Nan Yaegashi of Senran Kagura, the Sorcery Saga artist, Suzuhito Yasuda who does the antigravity-tits in Devil Survivor, et cetera.

No. I was just bringing up a point regarding series history. It's not Raita for this one.

Fire Emblem too, right? And he's not an artist really, but even Anno has been involved with porn. :P

Looking at the current japanese gaming landscape, that dosn't look like a terrible thing. Moreso if that means Ayami Kojima is getting all those jobs.

Oh man you have no idea if you think this is just a Japanese dev thing.

The difference is in Japan an artist can make a living selling porn, and it doesn't stop them from later getting non-porn employment, which is a bigger issue here in the west.

Which come to think of it speaks better of Japan than it does the west, in many ways.

Sweet jesus what's happening here?!

"Make them bigger, fuck it, I don't care. They say they like'em big? Make'em big, who gives a fuck."

Oh man you have no idea if you think this is just a Japanese dev thing.

The only counter I would say to this is that every other region that engages in this seems to be turning away from it. Call it social climate, call it self-censoring, whatever. Japan is the only region that really seems okay with staying where they are regarding things like this.

You are sidestepping the intention behind Sega's marketing and placing the blame entirely at the audience's feet for perceiving the character in this way. I pointed to the framing of this character, the lighting and the tone of this game presented in the trailer as elements of it's objectification and your entire argument can be summarized as "No, you."

I watched the same trailer as you did and I don't agree with most of these comments. The heroes are on the ground and she's on top as the villain (this is a common protagonist-antagonist relationship). The camera (the protagonists viewpoint) moves up to meet her but it moves along pretty quickly and doesn't linger on any part of her. The only super close-up we get is that of her mouth as she's singing. The blue light/flames don't highlight her bust to the exclusion of her other features (such as her hair). It is a short trailer with not many story details or characters to discuss, that is true, but that shouldn't make the other aspects really stand out all the more.

I'm not sure this isn't also true in the States

Raita's original art was more restrained, I've got the artbook on my shelf after all and even in the more revealing bits of art it's not nearly as bad as it would become (and I kind of feel like this new character is picking up from this end).
It wasn't until the series fell into a more niche state that Raita unleashed.

Fair enough. I get what you're saying.

Raita's drawn like that art on the bottom for a long time, you know. At least, he was drawing art like that in that style years before Valkyria Chronicles 1 even came out (I just checked.) I have a feeling the VC1 art was him tentatively making something reserved, and afterwards he settled back into his normal, default style. That's just speculation though.

Oh yeah, I'm aware that the second pic is more his actual style.
So I'd say your speculation is probably on point.

If VC1 was Raita's break into mainstream, then I could understand the restraint.

I've read a lot about that topic over the years. I think it's interesting that many great artists use porn to basically practice and refine their work and break into the mainstream. I don't know if it's a desperation for finances or merely just a way they use to improve, though I'm sure each artist has their own situation.

And you are framing the argument in such a way that big boobs, regardless of any potential situation, are objectification. Lighting or no lighting, framing (which way is she supposed to be framed? Sideways? From above?), tone (Looking cool?), your argument would be exactly the same regardless.

All. On. You.

This post is good. I'll just let this be the last statement of the night on this ridiculous escapade over boobs.

Zone
makes ALOT of porn
draws for Lab Zero

...Because not everything has to be a hardline element to the core plot and it's nice to learn about characters. Oppai episodes don't offer anything to the story either, but the last two VC games still had them. Regardless, it'll never happen because most guys don't even understand the pitfalls of large breasts. Which is why it's fun to wish for things.
Fan service episodes serve the fans (obviously) and the series by increasing people's interest and the it's marketability. A 7 minute rant on the trials and tribulations of large breasts serves significantly less everything and everyone. Though depending on the tone, show, and execution it definitely could work as a tongue in cheek jab

A common fetish then. While ball busting exists, we don't have guys wearing thongs in order to expose them and give their audience a look at the goods in literally every medium on earth. At least, not for titillation and almost exclusively for comedy.
These analogies break down because you can't compare visible testicles to large breasts. One is part of genitalia the other is a secondary sexual feature.

The direct analogy would be more along the lines of comparing in clothes ball exposure to camel toe. Both of which tend to be reserved for more mature media.

Sometimes it's just a way of doing what they love to make money.

I was talking about Raita before, but his recent magical girl porn series has gained a meteoric rise in popularity, enough to get 15 installments and even to get an animated short with big-name voice actresses to the characters. It's funny, actually, how some of the designs he uses look a hell of a lot like some Valkyria designs.

Just because Raita broke into the mainstream doesn't mean he bothered stopping. Same goes for Shirow - all he does is porn now, actually. He hasn't done anything GiTS related in ages.

Again, you're choosing to ignore statements that I've already made to create a strawman. I stated I had no problem with Dragon's Crown's art style and portrayal of female characters because the intent behind it was a parody and an homage to 80s fantasy paintings, and the overexaggeration on display there was a stylistic choice shared by the male members of the cast as well. If I was incapable of seeing past the context that they are presented in like you say I am, then I would never have said that. Your basis for defense of this game's art style is that there is some kind of plausibility to the existence of exaggerated female anatomy because there are power swords and scorpion tanks in the game.

You know, I follow Raita on pixiv and twitter, so thanks for putting some stuff in context for me. I think amusing but respectable how Raita has kind of embraced his Valkyria creations into his other work. His twitter avatar is still Selvaria and he retweets new Valkyria info all the time, so you can tell he has a lot of pride in his work.

Anxious to see how the original battle system is going to translate to the new title without firearms. In-game footage please!

Actually, it still has guns. :)

Both your soldiers and the enemy soldiers have machine guns, and one of the main characters has a rifle. The recently revealed antagonist uses dual pistols.

They just have fancy weapons like scythes and swords as extras because it's a super-fantasy game. It wouldn't surprise me to see Brunhild eventually use a large gun like Selvaria did.

It's not going to have the original's battle system. New game, new Universe, new genre.

Though apparently perma death is still going to be a thing?

He did the concept for Koukaku no Pandora. Well, it says based on a concept by Shirow. So maybe it's something from years ago.

Yep! Once a soldier goes down it looks like you have 60 seconds to pick them up otherwise permadead. This will be in the demo as a demonstration.

...I hope I don't need Japan PS+ to activate a demo. I'll be sure to verify a couple of days before release.

It's gonna be on the JPN psn? or is it a bonus with the purchase of VC:Remaster?

Koukaku no Pandora is the most Shirow thing ever only filtered through the Excel Saga guy.

Which honestly makes it the most amazing thing ever if you are interested in lesbian robot maids.

Please tell me we are getting this gorgeous game in the west?

Also is this an RPG? Is this the same team of guys that made Valkyria Chronicles (and Skies?)

Ah sorry, should have clarified. I'm going to buy the remaster digitally which should give me the demo code. However I don't think I need PS+ to activate a demo.

Action RPG, same team who made Valkyria Chronicles 3 (not Overworks, though some Overworks devs headlined production). VC3 was a good game in spite of limitations, so no need to worry.

Also the demo is supposed to be a way for fans to give feedback on the battle system. So it's more like a semi-closed beta, so I think the game has a good shot of becoming a fun one.

As for us getting it in the West... well, I'd expect it maybe half a year or longer after the Japanese release this Winter 2016. Sega Japan doesn't develop titles with the West in mind in terms of releasing and localization. The two branches really do not coordinate well, if at all.

Can't believe that with such a GREAT news, we're talking about Selvaria's big chest -_-
Like what more would you expect on GAF? This has been the pattern for pretty much any thread about a game with a sexy female character. I mean look at any thread about R. Mika or past threads on this game.

Yep. You can't even call it derailing anymore. That's just what happens now, every time.

I'm getting a sequel for one of the first games I bought for my PS3 and I adored? Awesome, holy crap. I just recently replayed the actual PS3 version to stop my temptation to buy the steam release. They did a really good job making these games in a tactical environment while still giving you very quick control over the game. Comparing it other turn based RPGs, which might not be quite right, they did a lot to make the original series into something special.

Also because clearly it's important, something something breasts something something offended something something i'm right, you're wrong, something something.

It's not the size of her breasts that's the problem, it's the way they lay. It looks incredibly unnatural, kind of like the gravity-defying breasts of Devil Survivor 2. People react to ill-proportioned and anatomically-suspect designs all the time, but the only time people dismiss it as "outrage" is in cases like this. I know a certain sect of individuals can't tolerate any criticism of female character designs, but you're going to have to learn to start.

We've had these discussions before. Maybe create a dedicated thread instead of derailing yet another one.

This thread is about the extended teaser and music making of. Except no one is talking about these things.

sorry but this character design just makes me roll my eyes

Selvaria looks weird in that new artstyle...

Yeah, I still can't take that design seriously. At all.

It's not even about the fact her breasts are big. It's that they're just totally unnatural, unproportional, and just looks ridiculous in comparison to her figure which seems fairly slim otherwise.

Rest of the designs seem pretty decent though.

Why? This is the appropriate topic to discuss this. People are talking about the teaser. Granted, I don't agree with many of the critiques and its a shame how its dominated the conversation but people are still free to express themselves and they are still on topic.

I figured we wouldn't get far until the boob-shaming of well-endowed women started.

Her back is unnaturally arched backward as if she is designed to boast her unrealistic breasts.

Sometimes it's really apparent that both the industry and this forum are dominated by straight males.

Bummer

sounds like a crapshoot at best... though is it a PS4 game?

That titty picture is from the first teaser when the game was revealed. We've already had this discussion then and more than once after that. Is this all you guys can talk about? It's getting really annoying to see a new update of multiple games, but the thread is unsurprisingly derailed because lol boobs. That's why I say make your own thread so the same incredibly tired discussion doesn't seep to all other related threads.

This is becoming GameFAQs level derailment. Ironic when someone starts making fun of that site here.

Bummer

I don't have a doubt that it will come over, just that it will be very slow and release during some ridiculous time (like on the same day as a major Western AAA title), SEGA-style. And yes, it's PS4 only.

Eh? Did you already preorder the physical version? :P
I'm getting both the physical and digital versions of the remaster, because the physical one has some excellent preorder bonuses.

Raita still killing it.

Anyone complaining about breast sizes should do some research as to who the lead artist is on Valkyria.

Do you have any thoughts on the teaser or the making of the music? Because your only two posts in this thread are engaging in metadiscussion about the so-called derailment. We're always willing to consider steering discussions back on topic if a derailment is deemed detrimental to the topic at hand, but in the mean time, I think the most productive thing those concerned about the topic can do is to ignore the side chatter and stay on what they perceive to be the topic at hand.

I wonder what kind of impact this might have on how the story is told. I'd assume that like in VC, there are certain core story-essential characters that can't perma-die. But that means there will be secondary/tertiary(?) characters that can die. So whatever impact or interaction they can have on the story would have to be rather minimal such that the story can proceed just fine with or without them.

That wasn't so much of a problem in VC when most of your squad is essentially the same body with different heads and they don't really matter. In a more traditional RPG I wonder how that will work.

Sure. I said it once before in the old teaser thread...the Valkyria's theme sounds nice. Good use of vocals and good singer choice. And we don't see "making of" videos often so that's cool to see as well. It looks complex.

Meanwhile I can't tell if the first (new) part of the teaser is in game or not. I think I prefer the brightness of the original VC but I need to see this game in gameplay first.

I'm glad she's making a return, one of my favorite characters from the first game.

I cannot contain myself, I need the HD remaster and this new game NOW.

Selvaria isn't making a return though. None of the characters from the original are (so far). It's a different world. The character shown with the huge boobs in the trailer is Brunhild. Obviously, there are design similarities, but they're different characters.

It looks like we're going to get details on the western release of the remaster next week. What will be interesting is to see whether they include the demo for this in that version like they were in Japan. Although we probably won't get a confirmation for that right now.
