NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

finally forced myself to give manga studio 5 a whirl since I bought it back during the black Friday sale. Drew in manga and colored in photoshop:

I forgot how shitty I am >.>

lol.. i finally got off my butt and did this..
Just 2 more wintery gift exchange things to go...!

3-4 hours?

Oh, also this:
tumblr_o0cgx3i3mS1tb3rvdo1_r1_1280.png

My character Altaire as Chrom from FE: Awakening because one of my friends very, very mistakenly thinks Chrom is similar to my character because her only exposure is flanderized fanart. :l
3 hours?

^ Oh, if I remember, I'll try! I still have a couple of things I have to get done before the deadline though, so we'll see.. (also.. I am not really a fanart portrait/celeb type of person. lol)

Maybe 4 hours..?

I'm not sure if this is the right thread or not, I didn't see "no requests" in the rules. But I have a drawing request if someone is up for the task.

Looking for a drawing of a Female Togruta (white, blue striping) with a DLT-20A rifle with a hunter type look. I'd like to use it as my character portrait for a (pen and paper) Star Wars rpg I'll playing soon. I tried looking online for a usable portrait and all I can find are borderline porn drawings lol.

Maybe someone will take you up on this as a good challenge/prompt.. so good luck! A lot of people here are more on the professional side and would want money for such a request though. lol

Uh.. one more thing before I meet up with my friends!

This was supposed to turn out a bit more light magical girl/sailormoon but welp. lol

That's what I assumed, but wasn't sure. I stalk the thread and always see amazing art in here so figured someone may take it as a nice practice/warm up piece lol.

Personally, I haven't finished a piece in a while. I have a number of unfinished images I've spent too long on.

I love this and | always find these short times stated very frustrating. Fast artists love to state time taken. Amazing poses, interactions, and very slick inking.

Thank you!! :D

It's actually because I have little to no patience. Usually if I can't finish something in under 8 hours or one sitting, I won't ever finish a piece. LOL So the only way I can get anything done is to make myself faster!!! Also I tend to skip washroom and food breaks and am in pain trying to finish things like this... q___q I think it may be a bit of asperger's traits tendencies hahah. I am bad at transitioning between tasks. It's also the procrastinator in me. My schoolwork essays and studying were also mostly one-and-done type deals.. which isn't always the best mindset.. lol

Being able to take more time and be patient with your work is a virtue too. I think C.B. sometimes laments how long their stuff takes, but then look at the amount of polish and thought put into it! So I have tried more often to do things with longer times and multiple sittings/days but.. the results sometimes make me feel like it wasn't worth my time lol.. Also I have been drawing for my whole life almost (I am 31 if that helps any lol), so I have developed a lot of "shortcuts" or reflexes to get to a result I am okay with faster. And even so, I am still not really satisfied with my skill level so.. it's kind of eternal art angst!

We each have our "pace" with art and it's okay.

But if you're feeling raw about things not being "finished", maybe try aiming to just finish an inked drawing or a sketch and build momentum from there. Putting a sketch onto a textured background like wood grain or cardboard or paper usually makes it look more like a finished piece haha.. I do that a lot..
For example:
heitaire_by_meibatsu-d4fh15w.jpg

WOW LOOK! ALL DONE! xD

And sorry if my stating times makes anyone else feel uneasy. Maybe it lights competitive fires in others, but if it makes anyone feel frustrated, just know that I am probably needing to pee or eat at the halfway mark but am unable to break away because I am body-dumb. If you see me saying 6-8 hours, pls worry for me. lol (though i am sure i took a break to pee at some point during that.. i think..)

Upgraded to a 6SPlus earlier this week and decided to try Procreate. Coincidentally after devolving carpal tunnel I ordered a stylus which should be in next week. Can't wait! Any other good drawing apps for iOS?

I may consider doing this depending on when you need it by. I can only offer a sketch though.

This ain't no race b! There is no such thing as too quick/too long. At least in my book anyway. You'll get faster with practice.

worked on today, about 2-3 hours.

samfs6mukk.jpg

worked on a couple weeks back. Can't even remember how long as I was working on it in various places. He is called SAM and he has a small head. Really he has just big arms but everyone just thinks he has a small head. I think he has a small head.

I really do feel like I shouldn't be sharing these with the whole patreon thing I'm supposed to be doing and all. I'll be streaming the Robyn picture later today if Tom lets me.

About 4 hours.

What's the difference between this thread and the Art Self Study one? Would studies like these be more appropriate over there?

I'm jealous of that rendering skill. Teach me lol

The goal for the Art self study thread is to learn, so questions about art concepts, tools and books, and posting work with the goals of someone pointing out things you can improve on. That's the goal at least. While here you can post daily sketches, wips, scraps, etc.

That's the goal at least IMO. But I realized that each thread for some reason has different communities. I mean, you won't see Raging Spaniard posting on this thread and Art Self Study. C.B. and Prax resides here and Arts and Farts. Most of the professional/established artists here on GAF reside on those older threads while most of us learning still reside on Art Self Study.

I may consider doing this depending on when you need it by. I can only offer a sketch though.

No worries if you don't find time (I completely understand). One minor detail change is the character's race is now Cathar (final decision on my part). The Cathar are a cat-like race in the star wars universe. There is no time constraint or anything like that, this was simply just a casual request, I would be forever grateful with just a simple sketch. I appreciate your response!

Oh yeah, I more just choose one thread to spam.. and I guess this one is it!! (I stopped posting in Arts and Farts, for instance lol)

I think the self study thread is more for actual studies and critiques and I feel like I don't belong there because.. I am lazy.. and don't study.. >_> I more do whatever I want aimlessly most of the time and don't really actively look for critique while other people are more actively trying to improve.

I feel like I'm finally starting to realize that I'm terrible :|
I think that's an important step in getting better though! When you start seeing there's problems, it takes time for your skill and problem solving to catch up to where your brain has grown in "sophistication/taste" in a way.
So which part right now is making you feel most unsatisfied with your drawing? Just work on one issue at a time and you'll find yourself catching up to where you want to be.

As for me.. I am trying to watercolour again for the first time in like a decade and it's killing me because I can barely wait to let layers dry before trying to mess with it.. >_>

NSFW potentially. "tasteful nude", but you never know:

3 hours. I messed up on the background pretty badly so I took a permanent marker and blacked it all out. :D

I tried to be more patient with this one but.. I still mucked it up a bit. Luckily watercolour is kind of forgiving and you can "buff out" harsh wet edges or areas you don't like. However, it makes the piece lose a bit of the loose spontaneity that makes watercolour more "charming". You can compare how I tried to control the paint a lot more in the faces vs the orange scarf where it looks "jucier" and even nicer because I didn't care about it as much.

5 hours with me running around and trying to shower and make food to try to not touch it while it was still wet. I try to use white gouache both as a highlight and as a "corrector". lol

My thoughts are kind of the same on this as the others. I see the drawing a day thread as a place to post whatever you have drawn within the day, progress shots and whatever or general doodlings. Arts n Farts I post my finished pieces. I don't post in the study thread because I simply don't do very many exclusively study pieces these days. I should get into the habit of doing them though. But that thread seems more dedicated to honing ones skills.

I feel like I'm finally starting to realize that I'm terrible :|

Realising you're terrible also means you realise you can do better. Sad to say but the struggle is endless if you're wanting to pursue art as something to be good at. Accept that you'll always be looking miles ahead of the road from now on. The trick is to keep looking forward and never at your feet. You are making progress though!

I would post something but its not really worth it yet....

Sorry I know this ain't Art Self Study but here it is

Dude, I think you just need to look at your drawing regimen. Most of your work was only done at front view, so not only you draw the same thing (which gives you bad habits if unattended), but only doing it front view do not help you to see your drawings as 3-dimensional.

One of the things you can do is to give your front view faces a bit more uptilt. Just make your head tilt a bit upward/downward. It will cause your construction lines to curve a bit which gives you a more 3D looking face compared to a straight on front view.

If you start to have problems with that, it's good! Just like C.B. said, struggle is endless in Art. (Thanks C.B. for saying this now, I'm a bit discouraged a bit myself lol).

Just to add, right now I'm struggling with drapes and color theory. I'm studying my multiple clothing/drapery figure drawing books and fashion illustration books while taking pics of random people for clothes refs (creepy I know, sorry :P ). I also went far to still program a VBA spreadsheet just to understand blending modes! While with that, I also figuring out a proper workflow for myself by watching various artists do their work.

Trust me, the struggle of depreciating yourself will not end! The more I get deep to this hobby, the more I realize I need to learn more lol. You are an artist now, and there's no going back.Just enjoy the ride man!

Np problems! I just wish you can make an entry to the contest though T_T.

(Seriously, it's a huge break for us to get Anatomy Next on board.)

Also, why don't you try doing blow dryers on drying watercolor? I see many watercolor instructors on youtube doing it all the time

I think the way it is right now is a good thing. Different threads = different environments that are all necessary for an artist. I just wish I am good enough to be able to post works on the Arts and Farts thread T_T

Also, I know this ain't Self Study but... CB help with Zigzag folds! How do I draw a lineart with that thing? ARRRRGH

Thanks for the support guys, that pic just really irked me, along with the one I did prior to it. After what felt like a 2 month long break from drawing/sketching stuff I had completely forgotten where I was skill wise and remembered myself being better than I actually am. Then I drew that and reality sunk in lol I feel like I've been trying to get the hang of drawing faces for years, though, the more I think of it, I actually have spent like a little over half a decade trying to basically get it down pat to varying results. As far as doing something other than straight on front views, or just different things in general, I got one of the model sets from proko that I've been meaning to check out. Just gotta wait for some alone time so I can give it a whirl.

In any case, here' some practice stuff for tonight:

pupils... so much trouble @_@

LegendX48, that looks very nice! I recommend trying to put heavier emphasis on the line above the eye, and possibly leaving a small gap beneath the eye. Googling 'beauty eyes drawing' might give you some inspiration?

Personally, I need to dig myself out of my rut.

For the portrait contest.

Click the images for higher res. Detail shots are somewhere around 60% zoom (hi-res version).

Excuse me for posting this everywhere but it's the first thing I've completed this month.

I'll see if I can write up an explination as to how I go about doing it but what I will say is a lot of it is playing with line weight and will depend on the weight of the fabric itself. I'll get back to you on this one!

Was working on a sketch tonight, I think stalking C_B's tumblr today had a slight effect on me.

Welcome to the dark side. I actually really want to see how you go about painting this one...

Current commission I'm working on.

bishrcolwiphdqhe.jpg

had to make it sfw (tried to anyway - nsfw tush tush version is here). I've really been dying to use this sort of light setting for ages and haven't been able to finish anything with it so I thought it's work alright for this one. Trying to step up my game again, lately I feel like I've been slacking on my commissions and just getting the work done. I'll be trying to finish this up tomorrow actually; will be streaming all day most likely.

P.S. Nice drawings everyone!

Love this. What program are you using? Anyone know if there's a similar app for Android?

Anyway, here's my contribution. Pen, 'Sexy Baby.'

Sexy Baby is kick ass!

Both procreate and Autodesk sketchbook should be on android. The latter definitely is because my husband downloaded it onto his lg stylo the other night.

I need to block in my shadows again baaaaad. I kind of like his face though. Tonight I'll work on that sorry mop of his.

^ Ahhh.. that looks awesome! I don't knwo how you guys have the patience for tablet/mobile art apps.. I need maximum comfort for everything.. hahah!

I tried out pencil crayon again after who knows how long (probably 10+ years lol)

tumblr_o1fdrc2Xha1tb3rvdo1_1280.jpg

Plain inked version probably looks better. So much more.. pristine~
tumblr_o1fdrc2Xha1tb3rvdo5_500.jpg

4 hours of hand hurts. I used to make so many "character profiles" with pencil crayon before and now I don't understand how I managed.. lol I suppose necessity at the time forced my hand..

I agree the pen looks better, but the color isn't bad.

Halfway through I gave up on my dumb stylus. Was really feels no some of the brushes I was messing with. The face isn't as successful as I wanted it to be but next time I'll block in more before high tailing it to Detail Town.

It kind of looked cool from a further away perspective lol
But yeah, luckily I scanned and saved the lineart in higher res because I knew I'd screw up a bunch. XD

Next up, I'm going to try to use my prismacolor markers again!
I was never great with them, but they looked okay in my eyes back then.. so let's see hwo much I remember..

Lee Pace as Thranduil. For the portrait contest.

Click the images for higher res. Detail shots are about 65% in the hi-res version, IIRC.

I was going to leave it at the Eva Green portrait, but then this one popped out. First time I've gone so wacky with a background.

Holy shit. I think you got this on lock.
Thanks, fingers crossed!

i like it, especially the lovely pastel-like finish of her skin and the mix of saturated oranges, browns, and pale yellows where the light hits her hair. nice touch with the DOF on her dress too.
Thank you! It was a fun opportunity to try out dramatic lighting, and also some things I don't usually do, like beads. Long hair is kind of intimidating, but Iike the way it turned out.

I made a gif for Witchsona week! >:o
It took me 5 hours of "I dont' know how to use.. any program but MSpaint for clean non-aliased and purely single pixel lines" and.. .. ... ...

I finished this

I...had a good time painting this. Now I have a list of guys with horns to paint with my commissioners. Nsfw tush tush. I still feel like I could have spent another like, 20 hours on this. I've lost track of time. I always feel my work is so out of place here sometimes. I should draw some animu or some shit.
