The Division Beta Thread: Make Manhattan Great Again

I loved the beta. Aside from excessive jogging simulator and horrible storytelling, missions were fun, every encounter was cool, co -op worked flawlessly, dark zone was tense, looting was addicting, AI was surprisingly good, and playing the mission on hard was the right amount of challenge.

I loved it. I need more beta. I think I'm addicted.

I'm just curious about the Destiny folks, did you like this game (the little that was accessible)? Was it what you expected? Did it fall short? Did it exceed expectations? Is this the game that will replace Destiny for you? Why or why not?

I remember seeing a ton of Destiny-GAF before beta release, so I'm just personally curious about your status post beta.

Late response: I consider myself "Destiny folks" (beta, 550 hours in retail on all expansions). My impressions:
- I really enjoyed it, and will definitely be picking it up on release regardless of if my Destiny group does.
- It's preeeeety close to what I expected; it didn't exceed my expectations, except for maybe what they were able to squeeze out of the PS4 for graphics given all the other systems in the game.
- I'll need to wait and see how retail feels to determine if it can replace Destiny for any length of time. As is, I'm anticipating it being my side piece while Destiny gets its shit together, at which point it can call me.

Some qualifiers:
- in my opinion Destiny and Division flip-flop "rpg-ness" and "gameplay". Destiny is an FPS with mmo/rpg-lite elements. Division really came off to me like an RPG that happens to use TPS/cover as its combat.
- based on the bullet, above, people who prioritize gameplay/shooting may not like Division. Your skill is definitely far less important than your stats in Division.
- I play these games to 1) play a social game with pals on a regular basis 2) have fun exploring, getting loot, seeing my character grow/change, have stories about stuff that happened while playing with the group.
- Based on these priorities, I think Division will be at least a good placeholder ((assuming my Destiny team ends up playing) until Destiny's next major content drop. Whether it REPLACES Destiny depends on a few things: how much content there is in the retail release, what the actual plan for additional content ends up being, what Destiny ends up doing. If Destiny's next major release ends up being "Destiny 2", has good improvements, and/or has TTK-level content, I'll PROBABLY go back there. Division would have to pull a hell of a trick out of its hat to prevent that.
- On an ongoing basis, I expect Division to be the thing to do when I'm bored or burned out with Destiny.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll wait to see if they get some good anti-cheat stuff in there. I played most of my dark zone stuff on the PS4 so I didn't get to experience the rampant cheating that seems to be getting reported.

I played the beta 10 hours and didn't see anyone cheat once. Not saying it's not something that needs to be addressed before launch, but it was hardly rampant.

The beta was good. Smooth, great visuals, good gunplay.
The full game? We don't know yet. I'm optimistic though.
But we don't know about end game, enemy variety, replayability, etc.

I'm conflicted about this kind of double standard we have when something has multiplayer. Is endgame and destiny/mmo endless replayability suddenly the most important element?

It can make a good game great of course, but can lack of endgame really make a great game bad if the first 50 hours were fun as hell? At what point should a gamer just accept that a game has run out of content?

Does it come down to the expectations we have for a game? How much the developers hyped it up beforehand and such.

In any case, I'm guessing 'the beta but bigger' will keep me entertained for my money's worth at the very least.

I really hope there is an option to swap 'O' and 'X' on consoles(PS4). Every game, off the top of my head, has these the other way around even their other recent shooter(R6) has X as Vault/Jump, and O as Crouch. Yet in the Division these are swapped, and make you do the exact opposite of what you'd want to do. Gets me killed all the time. Why Ubi?!

You're not bad, these people have double your DPS and health. They're basically twinks just trolling because they have nothing better to do and some people get real satisfaction griefing without repercussion. Hopefully most of it is just temporary beta behavior, but I suspect this community will be frigging toxic. I wonder if Massive realizes how gross people are. Or maybe that's their fetish. lol. Idk.

Day 1. Even with the Douche Zone at maximum.

Man, that's what I'm hoping. The DZ has been a red flag for me since the beginning since I don't do a lot of PvP in games, but the first two days I had a lot of fun with it. Last night was just a pure shit show. In any case, now we play the waiting game.

I played almost exclusively on Xbox and racked up over 3 days worth of playtime. Luckily all we had on Xbox was the invisibility glitch and yet I still got attack over 16 times in one session.

The invisibility glitch is accidental but people still used it to be dicks, I can only only imagine how it would be when people can force this stuff.

I'm feeling the absence already.

+1

I've been crying about Destiny's lack of matchmaking for various modes including the story missions for a long time now so I agree, The Division does it way better. You can matchmake for virtually any activity which is awesome.

I was lukewarm on my experience with the beta, but I loved the way it processed everything from matchmaking to fast travel to your squadmates to starting missions. Everything seemed to go pretty smooth.

My biggest problem is with the gameplay and the dichotomy between the bullet sponges and the real world setting. You can say it's an RPG all you want, but the game clearly expects you to shoot human enemies, and to do it a whole lot. I found the shooting well below TPS standards and not very satisfying, so that's a problem for me.

In addition, the whole game just seems a bit uninspired and bland from my perspective. Will I keep grinding to get a slightly better military assault rifle? I'm not sure. Maybe the full release will alleviate some of my concerns. I really hope they don't draw a line in the sand too much with the 'realistic' setting and allow the gameplay and missions to explore more unrealistic, dramatic settings, at least a little bit.

I'm also very curious as to higher-level abilities. None of the ones we had were any fun to use, nor were the offensive ones particularly effective. Hated planting a sticky bomb on a guys chest and see him shake it off and shoot me .5 seconds later. Will the enemies, higher level abilities and encounter designs be constructed smartly enough to allow for dynamic, creative gameplay? I have my doubts.

I think the Base of Operations should have been a social hub tbh. Especially since you can't (at least in the beta) fast travel to Camp Hudson.

As previously stated....yes you could. Also there will be a safe house in every district which can be fast traveled to and they are all social hubs.

I have posted the EXACT same thing when it comes to the focus of the game. The Division IMO focuses much more heavily on the "RPGness" of the new Shooter/RPG/MMO-lite genre. Destiny focuses on the Shooter aspect. I felt that The Division had much more in common with Diablo 3 (in terms of loot and how it works with your stats) then Destiny.

Im curious to see how the raids will turn out (or whatever they have imagined for endgame pve content which they say they have).

Regardless, I love RPGs, and will be picking this up for sure. Will I pour 500 hours into it like Destiny? No probably not. But Ill get my 60 bucks worth.

oh god this a thousand times.

I agree with this.

You know a side thought popped in. Would it be cool if there was 3 type of servers available in this game?

1) All PVE, totally remove the dark zone aspect
2) The current plan, a mix of PVE areas and DZ areas
3) All DZ, all the time, the entire map runs as its a DZ.

I'd be in for (3).

At times The Division is one of the best looking games I've seen. The texture quality isn't always up to snuff, and the pop in can get ugly, but when it hits on all cylinders it's a sight to behold. Some pics I took; like a dummy I forgot to remove the HUD : /

I don't remember all UI settings in PC version, were we able to hide absolutely everything? Including WP and party member markers from the edges of the screen?

Eurogamer confirmed Division on X1 use dynamic scaling as I suggested it might do.

"It's clear from this viewpoint that Xbox One utilises a dynamic resolution scaler in order to sustain its target frame-rate, much like Halo 5 and Wolfenstein: The New Order. Essentially, this means that the game adjusts its resolution on the fly, dependent on GPU load in any given scene."

"The logic behind this dynamic resolution is easy to explain too. Inevitably, looking up to the sky in the same initial area - even slightly - to force the demanding elements of this scene out of view, the Snowdrop engine switches itself to a full 1080p. But as you'd expect, lowering the camera again (bringing all objects and fog effects into view) gets us back to 1792x1008.

The end result is an occasional softening of the image, and tends to occur around outdoor scenes as opposed to interior traversal and combat. In terms of the actual breadth of resolution changes, we've not had time to assess the full range utilised by the Xbox One beta - though the lowest figure we've logged comes in at 1728x972 (or 81 per cent of a full HD resolution)."
