Firewatch's PS4 performance is terrible

I've been burned enough times buying immediately at launch that I think I'll wait. This game looks fun as hell, and I've been looking forward to playing it with my wife...but I'm going to wait until it's a bit more polished. I hope that happens relatively quickly, otherwise this will just drop off my radar and I'll forget about it. =/

This.

After The Master Chief Collection, Assassins Creed Unity, DriveClub, Diablo 3, there are more but I'll leave it at that and say I've had enough of poor performance games at launch.

So disappointed - I was looking forward to this so much, even woke up early to buy the bundle when it first went up. Why not just lock at 30fps? And the crashes etc are inexcusable.

You really needn't minimise the issues of the engine. Practically all 3d Unity games have issues on Consoles. They have some issues on PC sometimes.

Hmm, that's interesting, do you know any examples?
I totally believe you i, just want figure out if there is a common factor to all or if it's just the engine that simply doesn't work well with the ps4 at all....

Are they taking place outside as well?

Yeah good luck with that. Playstation support is terrible and who knows if you end up getting your profile locked or something like that. It's not easy getting your money back from Sony. I think people are stupid when they are preordering and buying games before they know how they run and especially after. If you buy games that run this bad, then you can't ever bitch about other games that run badly. There is just no excuse for games to run this badly.

How am I supposed to know if the game runs bad without buying it? Hell, I played through most of The Witcher 3 on PS4 before I checked the GAF thread and found out it was supposedly unplayable. Maybe performance reviewers find unacceptable is barely noticeable to me, or vice-versa.

My point is that blaming the consumer here is not productive. Blame the devs if you want (and if the game really is unplayable for me, I will). And rightfully blame Sony's PSN refund policy (though they totally give refunds if you aren't an ass). This is supposed to be fun though, so don't suck the fun out things by calling people stupid for being excited to play a game the day it goes on sale.

We don't have a problem with Untiy on PS4 and actually prefer how we've locked frame pacing on PS4 over PC (the beauty of 100% dedicated hardware).

We hit 60fps under all conditions. While our game isn't a visual powerhouse, we run a shit ton of custom collision, AI, and per-object physics on a crapload of things on screen at once. Pretty sure our entire overhead goes towards a seamless, loadless, stutter-less presentation and the visual draw is next to nothing. We keep a lock on frame times only because I say so, I hate judder and frame drops.

However, there are issues we don't like with Unity on PC/PS4 but we work with those in mind and write a lot of our own custom systems vs using Unity's built in components. There are tradeoffs but for our game we've been able to work around them. Sometimes it sucks, but yeah. Unity has some quirks but its far from not serviceable. It has its strengths and weaknesses.

This is exactly what makes these issues so frustrating.

I mean, on the one hand - I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling that this poor of a performance really does specifically hurt this game in ways that other games with similar performance issues can get away with...

But on the other hand, I wish I was with the group of people who were able to overlook it and still enjoy the game because I was very much looking forward to playing it.

Here:
Of course. Go check out the following on consoles and you'll find awful, unstable performance...

Grow Home
Oddworld New n' Tasty
Gone Home (not Grow)
Galak-Z
Roundabout
The Last Tinker
Ziggurat
Never Alone

...and there may be more but those are the ones I've played. Performance is wildly unstable in all of them. They judder and lurch around horribly and, you know what? Some of them are bad on the PC as well.

It's not always bad. Ori and the Blind Forest, for instance, looks and runs well on XO (with minor slowdown and some crash bugs). Cuphead is awesome looking in person and seems to run well. Escape Plan was fine. The issue is, 80% of the time, when a game is built in Unity you can expect issues. Games like Jazz Punk, Kairo, Grow Home, Roundabout, Ziggurat and Galak-Z on the PC all run at 60fps no problem - but they have inherent issues with camera movement that results in a jerky looking experience. Why? Who knows, but it's not something you see in other engines. It's something I only started encountering as Unity blew up.

So, yeah, it has actually prevented me from enjoying games too many times now for many reasons and I've grown to hate the engine or at least approach with caution. I've even made a game in Unity before (unreleased) and can say it's nice to use - but UE4 is so much better. Heck, I'd rather work in UDK or CryEngine.

Also add SOMA to that list.

On PC Satellite Reign suffers from weird stuttering. Dreamfall Chapters also has terrible performance on PC.

Maybe thats the reason the game is still not availble in Brazil, here you can return any product within 7 days without any justification.

The game hiccups with each auto save. It gets obnoxious, yeah. There's an option to turn that off, so I wonder if that would clean up a lot of the problem.

I finished the game in four hours, one session. Wished I had simply saved manually after each "day", or each Trophy.

Had some serious framerate issues and stuttering in the first 15 minutes. It's calmed down since having the world actually open up. Still a nuisance but not quite a deal breaker. I did have one freeze on the loading screen though

buying a game blind shouldn't be a risk but unfortunately it is

Well I watched a few video reviews and always wanted this game so I pulled the trigger. Neither of the reviews I watched mentioned performance issues even though they were playing the PS4 versions. So much for informing me :/

I'm gonna try the refund option if that doesn't work then ill just deal with it.

Someone mentioned this in the OT, so maybe ill give that a go. They said disabling autosave fixed the drops mostly but they also forgot to save for an hour and lost all their progress lol.

Dammit. UNITYYYY.

What's the deal with engines and games called Unity? Do all of them have to run poorly on PS4?

Maybe they were only provided PC codes.

Or possibly did experience the performance issues, but were told that the issues would be fixed at launch?

That seems to be the typical PR type of stuff when sending out review copies early so the media can play and write their reviews in time.

That's what I did before starting to play. I didn't encounter any crash and such (I played around an hour) but the game still suffers from frame drops.

Did you actually play it on PS4? Genuinely asking.

I am playing it right now on PS4. Currently on day 2. Why?

The game sometimes stops for a new milliseconds as if it is loading something. But it's not really a big deal.

Game stutters and fluctuates in frame rate every few seconds, from the first moment you move around in the prologue to the end. I'd put it way above Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 in terms of notability but it didn't reduce my enjoyment of the story though but of course it would've been nice with a stable performance.

Having played fallout 3 on the ps3, I can safely tell you that it's been this way for some time now.
I didn't test Fallout 3 but I was around when people did. Certain titles and publishers simply had more sway than others when it came to the amount of bugs they were allowed to waive when it came to pushing something through QA, usually accompanied by the promise of a 'day 1 patch'.

If you don't know how to find out if a game runs badly before you buy it then what are you doing here? I'm not sucking the fun out of anything(strawman much) and people are free to buy the game, play it and have fun, but don't come back and moan about other games running badly. And yes you can get a refund on PSN, but it's not easy at all(especially if you have tried it more times). You can just as easily end up not getting a refund.

I'm sorry but it's just not acceptable that games get released in such a bad state as this. They should have delayed it. Other games gets absolutely shat on here when they have smaller problems, but Firewatch is on a completely other level of bad.

Because it's so far removed from my own experience, I figured you might be playing on PC.

Maybe performance varies from playthrough to playthrough. Someone else said it was near unplayable in the first 15 minutes and then it was okay.

I'll take Rapture/Fallout/Grow Home performance over this any time. It's my first experience on PS4 that a game felt truly handicapped by its performance.

This could be one of those games where hard drive speed has an effect on performance as well due to considerable streaming, which is why we're seeing varied reports. I know it helped Witcher 3 a lot for me.

And for those who have already bought it, stop with the post purchase rationalizations. Unacceptable performance is unacceptable at full price. When the game is $5 or free with Ps+, then it'll be OK.

Again, I played for a few hours on PS4 earlier. Not a damn thing I encountered in regards to technical issues stopped me from enjoying what I played. If you want to play the game then play it.

I played pretty much all walking simulators on the PS4 so far. Without having compared them all side by side, so far I remember games like Until Dawn or Everybody's Gone to the Rapture to have worse performances. I can confirm that Firewatch stutters as if the game is loading something. In a shooter it would definitely suck, and I usually am sensitive to even minor frame rate issues in such games. But in a walking simulator it's not really a big deal.

Certainly not unplayable by any definition of the word.

I had a feeling about this after seeing the PC Performance thread. Doesn't seem to run well on anything, despite only looking okayish graphically

In this redit thread there's an answer from the developers, hard to quote since in the phone and working lol

https://www.reddit.com/r/Firewatch/comments/44s8no/sounds_like_significant_ps4_performance_issues/

Hey Guys,

Couple'a updates. One is that we're in pipe with SCEA to get a patch into the game but it's like 99% strange content fixes we've found as lots of people play the game on PC. So that's coming but we're at the mercy of the console patch process.

Secondly, we're currently talking with both Sony and Unity (the creators of the engine the game is built in) to continue to optimize performance of the game on console. Unfortunately, it's a process that requires all three parties to be involved unlike a typical bug that we can quickly fix on our own (we're pretty good at that). We'll definitely be patching all platforms with every little content and performance fix we can find so folks can rest assured we're doing everything we can (and WILL for a long time. We want the game that's on Steam/PS4/anywhere to be the best possible version even after we're out out of the excitement of the launch window).

Sounds like it could take some time

What's with everyone saying grow home had issues? I honestly Don't remember anything super bad standing out when I played it.

I'm not technical enough to know exactly how to describe my problems with the game, but in terms of framerate and camera control my experience with Grow Home was very close to how people are describing Firewatch. Maybe it's just how Unity performs on consoles?

In any case, I finished the game and the issues didn't impact my enjoyment too much, so I'd expect the Firewatch situation to be pretty similar.

Hadn't considered that. Did it affect your framerate or just pop-in etc in Witcher 3?

I have a mgs5 ps4 with the go-to hd upgrade 2TB Seagate, as mentioned on Eurogamer and the like. Had nothing but positive experiences with it so far. But it could be a negative factor!

Both framerate and pop in

Was Soma on Unity? When the framerate shit itself in that game a lot of times reloading a save fixed it.

Aw fuck I just bought it, wish I had seen this.

Sorry dude. I don't buy jack anymore until I hear impressions or can try it myself in some capacity first. Too many instances of stuff like this nowadays.

I was interested in this game a few months back, but now I will probably forget all about it. Too bad.
