FINAL FANTASY XV - Niflheim Base Battle Footage

I can't recall if he actually says something about his lack of playing multiplayer games in there but he does all the time in KF. He just calls XI and XIV not FFs solely on the fact that they are MMOs

Yeah, like I said earlier, I don't get Colin when it comes to FF. I'd argue that XI is very much an "old-school FF" and even more FF than some of the offline FF games.

This is roughly how I'd imagine the game world to be divided like. Of course a lot of that will be untraversable (mountain-ranges & some smaller obstacles preventing you from going wherever you'd like to), but that would seem like something that is suitably big yet still manageable.

I think FFXV will get a LE console in NA. My predictions for the four LE PS4's in NA this year are Uncharted 4, FFXV, Horizon and CoD 2016. Swap Horizon out for a 3rd party game if it gets delayed.

The game is definitely BIG if they are adding airships for traversal.

Whew, the FFVIII -feels- I'll be getting when I ride the train between cities and towns.

It's gonna be a feat if they have the game that big and have it looking like the recent gameplay footage.
Depends. If they go for scale while sacrificing a bit on how unique & dense in content they make every square kilometer of the world, it's not all that impossible if they just have good terrain tools & efficient tools creating, adding & editing smaller details into the world. I mean, I imagine a lot of the environment around Episode Duscae will look pretty similar and you won't, like, advance from the open fields of ED to a misty magical forest after the first corner in the road which has a path that leads to an ice cavern that leads to the floating mechanical city of Solheim or anything. We've also seen a desert and that can be pretty big with relatively small effort. Even the Niflheim base saves some time when they are just repeating enemies you fight throughout the game, use vehicles to fill some of the environment that they've already modeled for use in other situations, it's most likely not the only base that will use those same assets etc., so it's not like they are creating unique assets for every square inch of the world that are only going to be used in that single location.

these are two interesting pics.. in the second one there is a connection from Lucis to Duscea, which is missing in the ingame shot. Maybe at some point the connection will get destroyed and the boys couldn't get back so easily as we saw in the 2008 trailer..

that logic makes sense. hope it'll be true.

God damn is this game gonna be huge. I don't see anything wrong with that, it's not like Noctis and crew are gonna jog throughout the entire game. We'll probably skip a decent amount of the map too with it being explorable if you choose to. Especially since we'll be taking trains through the map too.

I drool and the prospect of an airship. Please god.

I can't even imagine. That would be absolutely fucking incredible.

Even without airships, the car travels fast enough that the map needs to be huge. You just can't put in a dense but relatively small world like in Witcher 3 and have a grand road trip adventure, because if you paved a highway through those maps it would take 5 minutes to reach it from end to end.

It's fine for running around small villages on foot or horseback, but FFXV does something different and it needs scale for that.

Let me re-share my last pair of Duscae shots

and this first one is my favorite of all

These gifs are amazing, too:

I really do think it's just the combat that are throwing people off. If it had the turn base no one would be saying "it's not a FF game anymore" and if someone mentions "why are there cars?" then it's safe to assume that person isn't a FF fan in the first place and shouldn't be complaining about it.
This. FFXV is the perfect test to see who actually remembers/"gets" the franchise's DNA and is not just nostalgic because he played FFVII-FFIX as a kid and no other FF since. The hypocrisy is hilarious when it comes to FFXV. Can't resist calling out folks on SE Germany's FB site, especially after the recent footage. It's fun to see them backtrack as soon as you explain all the classic elements and show comparison images :P

Not sure if he's talking about a NA release, but Verendus saw the FFXV PS4 console:
Friend, the FFXV design is basically done, and I'm sorry to say that Destiny and MGS5 reign supreme. It isn't very good. Maybe you'll get something better next time with the Kingdom of the Hearts.

We in Nathaniel Drake's time now. The bestest of times. Bless this murderer.

All this speculation about the size of the game is interesting but until it's out we won't ever know exactly how big it really is. I would just be ecstatic if an airship is in it though!!!! I sorely missed map exploration in the later FFs.

On the paper, you're right. However, it's important to realize that having a large map would mean stretches of nothing, or Ubisoft-style collectathon all over the map. Both are not good. And Duscae in the demo doesn't give me confidence that they are able to replicate what Monolith Soft did with the two Xenoblade games in terms of the world level design, which is simultaneously huge and interesting to explore. Duscae just wasn't fun to explore, and while the technically the visual looks great, it was mostly mundane artistically.

I know some out there is already going to post that picture of FFVII world map, but the difference is FFXV is going to be an open world-ish game, where a big part of the game takes place on the outdoor field area. Older JRPG like FFVII only uses the world map as vessel to all the points of interest (towns, dungeons, hybrids, hidden places), which are the main focuses and are largely handcrafted with particular details in each screen. To what extent FFXV has these sort of point of interests, I don't know, but I doubt it's as much as the past FF since it's going to be more open world based.

I mean, I don't think it's a question of if it's large or small, just saying it must be large considering the game design they have chosen (a grand adventure around the world, in 1:1 scale with high speed vehicles available).

How it's actually implemented is still a question mark, but I think it'll be the "stretches of nothing" approach as they're going for a more realistic feeling. They can focus the detail in the specific landmarks, cities etc. and make them matter more, like in real life.

How complete is this game though? anyone have any guesses.

I mean the event in LA is coming up but do people think that the release date will be for this year?

The game was fully completed last year and they've been doing the final tests and whatnot over these last few months.

Plus they've been advertising it's release date for 2016 for a long time now with its date finally revealed in March so yeah, it's coming this year.

What makes you think that? Just because FFXV is open world doesn't mean it can't have as many points of interest as the previous games.

If anything we should be expecting a lot more judging by the size of the world map.

Great

Square is really out doing themselves with this one. They want this to be good ( i hope because it looks amazing balls), though i hope they haven't had to cut to many corners to get to release this year.

thx

Speak for yourself. I though Episode Duscae was a pretty well done environment to explore, for awhile, or at least showed potential. It wasn't that the area was wholly uninteresting that was the problem, it's that 1) we could only run to places and 2) we were stuck in that small area. Combine those and yeah, it ends up being an experience that doesn't offer endless amounts of fun & excitement to just run around in. I imagine chocobo drifting alone will make exploration So. Much. FUN., much like Nier's boar drifting is one of the GOAT modes of travel. Not to even mention that close by the ED area is that flaming crystal thing which would obviously be something that gamers will be drawn to and will be interesting to get closer to.

And FFXV will absolutely have long stretches of "nothing" (we already see this in the coastal video, it doesn't look like there is a treasure chest to be opened or a super boss to be fought every 5 meters), so better just be prepared for that kind of experience, though nothing doesn't have to be NOTHING. It can be a regular forest where you can battle some enemies and randomly run into a wild behemoth that might offer an intense battle, or find a lake you can fish in. Not every square-inch of the world needs to be packed with some super unique content handcrafted just for that location, let alone content like the boring-as-hell question marks in The Witcher 3 that are a complete waste of time even when you know you aren't exploring the area for nothing. There's nothing wrong with long stretches of this "nothingness", so long as they use good environmental design to point out & lead the gamer to the more interesting locations, so that gamers don't feel like they have no idea where some points of interest in the map might be.

I really have the feeling that XV will mark a turning point in the franchise . For good.
If anything, so long as Square Enix keeps making these big console FFs, I think FFXIII was a pretty important turning point for the franchise. It showed somewhat clearly at least some of the things that a vast majority of fans absolutely DO NOT want from a Final Fantasy game. So I doubt we'll ever see anything quite as barebones & megasuper-linear as FFXIII. We should at least be able to expect some level of side activities, exploration of more open environments & just generally having more to do than just following a story in all FFs going forward.

I think, with the representation of the world(as they seem to be doing with FFXV), there's no going back from that. They seem to be crafting this massive world with monsters and cities, so this is something that NEEDS to continue on into FFXVI and forward. You can't regress to the "hallway simulator" of FFXIII ever again.

Pretty much.

Highly doubt it. We can dream tho, i mean 66 pages in this thread, 10 years after the reveal announcement and somehow this still isn't FF to people(whatever that means)

well considering the FFVIIr is going to be real time combat some people are in for a rude awakening

the thing is...if FF15 delivers, and lets say the combat turns out to be really good and fun, some people (not everyone - there will always be people like Colin) will be more open for changes in the future (like the FF7 Remake) and i hope the general atmosphere in FF Thread will be better then

plz deliver tabata !

Well said. I liked Duscae personally and it was unfinished anyway, maybe it'll have more stuff in the final game.

That map is ridiculously huge, which makes me worry, haha.

It's impressive, but plenty of enormous game worlds wind up boring.

I Can't wait for this! My hype is at an insane level, i just know im going to lose myself in this world trying every little thing. And i know im not the Only one whose going to intentionally let the car run out of gas just to hear some dialogue while they push. I bet its going to be hilarious

"Hey, Noctis?"

"Yeah, what's up?"

"Why didn't we steal one of your dad's airships?"

That's what the car is for. I am sure there are plenty of places we can go but plenty we can't go. Like I bet at certain point it is literally just the road and nowhere to pull over

During the lighthouse segment where prompto yells the infamous "yahoo!" They said the guys had to take a boat somewhere unless I'm mistaken.

Yeah, boats are in. I may be wrong in this, but didn't they also confirm that we won't be able to control boats? Like they would be set to linear paths between two points?
