Microsoft Releasing Exclusive Games on PC Is Great for Xbox Owners

There are people out there are who completely intimated by buying, building, or using a PC for gaming. Some people just want it to work out of the box or hook up to their living room tv and play and not worry about drivers, settings, required specs, etc.

So the Xbox is for them. They can play the same games on their easy to use PC. Some people need to get out of their echochamber and realize they're enthusiasts and aren't the average gamer.

And nothing is wrong with putting these games on PC since Microsoft makes money from software and they own the windows 10 store (good luck seeing steam versions of these games). The enthusiasts get to play them and tinker with them for maximum fidelity and framerate and the more casual gamer who doesn't want to mess with anything PC gets to play the game as well with a device they are comfortable using.

Yeah, try asking PS4-only users how they feel about it.

Yep, this.

The way I see it: Ms and Sony should release all exclusive games on pc. Maybe at a much later date, but still.

Console users would still buy the game, same way they buy Fifa or CoD in droves (multiplat games).

Exclusivity just hinders our hobby.
Are you saying
A: PC's are irrelevant and not a real platform and should be excluded from the bonds of exclusivity firsty part games have?
Or
B: Uncharted 4 should be released on X1 aswell as PC too?
it's one or the other and we know the answer to B

This is really silly.

Again, exclusives aren't pushing the sales of these current gen consoles very much. Last year showed this pretty clearly. People are buying consoles to play third party multiplats -- many of which are available on PC.

If someone is an Xbox gamer, then this move IS good as it causes Quantum Break to have a better shot at a sequel due to more sales. Please tell me how is that a bad thing for Xbox gamers who will enjoy Quantum Break?

This is completely right. Exclusives really don't matter that much any more in terms of selling hardware

I can't believe there are 17 pages of people being torn/upset/crying because MS is making their games available to a broader audience and even giving them two versions of the same game for one purchase in some cases...I mean this makes me SMH.

Also if you already have an X1, meaning you invested in it, then unless you want to sell it to build a PC don't be stupid a don't sell it. There are still games and stuff that will be available there. The console still works perfectly and offer fun stuff. I really don;t get the attitude here of feeling betrayed, or saying Ms killed the XBOX brand.

With every sale of PS4, Microsoft potentially loses a gamer, not a lot of people care to own both, so if the PS4 is selling like hot cakes, and it does, they are in trouble.
You don't have to be a wizard to see the XBONE is getting outnumbered and outperformed, they are losing this war.

What's the best solution? do the one thing Sony won't and can't do, introduce XBOX as the gaming component of a new perpetual OS that isn't going away any time soon, use the PC fanbase for profit, get more money to invest more into gaming and get the edge on Sony, all in one stroke.

I don't want to jump the gun, but this is the best move for XBOX as a whole, there are reasons why they considered to sell the division a few times.
this only helps them in the short term . We already have folks believing this will be a short gen and with Microsoft porting their exclusives to PC now will any of these hard core enthusiasts throw down money for the xb4. this is suppose to be a marathon not a short sprint to the front just to collapse at the next checkpoint

Sure. What I'm saying is that Windows and Xbox aren't competing platforms. Putting games on Windows 10 is completely different than putting them on a Sony or Nintendo store.
I've in no way stated that though. Even with what you say, my statement still stands as it's what I believe.

You may not agree with statement, you may not like it and I have no issues with that but it's still what I think and you're not really in a position to tell me that what I think doesn't work.

IMO it's pretty reductive to just declare that the last 17 pages are filled with people upset. Most posers are just discussing the topic...

On one hand, it makes it more difficult to justify an XB1 purchase when so many of it's titles come to PC. But in the broader sense of things, it's difficult to justify a platform purchase of ANYTHING when you have a PC, PS4, or XB1. All of those platforms have more games than your average person can ever beat, hence the massive backlogs most people have.

The reality is, I'm not compelled to buy an XB1 even if none of it's "exclusives" were coming to PC because I have to worry about the stuff I still need to buy for PC, and my ridiculous backlog. By releasing these titles on PC they are making it so I go from not ever even considering them, to actually anticipating them and blowing away money on more games I'll probably never play.

YEah I know I exaggerated, but I cannot believe a decision that is clearly good for everyone is this controversial. I really cannot believe the twitter dude's reposes. Like they are giving you two copies of the game for one price and that is bad for the brand.

I don't know I just find it unbelievable that there are discussions as to this being bad.

Yeah, for Microsoft game devs this is good news. They don't have to worry about a Tomb Raider scenario that much. But this is also two sided, now they have to make the PC version as well. PCs are like wild west, you have millions of specs to work with. That optimizing and testing must be hell for PC devs. And then you need to worry on which platform is your main one: PC or Xbone. Which sells more.

Imagine if the doom-mongers are actually right. Quantum Break 2 is being made, but hey, Xbone didn't sell well enough and Microsoft will concentrate on PC only in the future. If they do well on the PC space, why even bother with the new Xbox? Good for Xbox players? Nah. Not really. Just forcus on Windows store, it's cheaper and easier, and they already have Win 10 and DX12. Maybe bring the Xbox brand for PC, some Steam-like library/shop? Why not, no need for that console anymore, let Sony and Nintendo fight it out. Consoles are dying anyway, some say.

It's a weird thing. I bought an Xbox at the first price drop (6 month in?) because I waited until around 2012 to buy a 360 and really regretted missing some of the Xbox 360 exclusives. Since I've had my Xbox One, I've only played the MCC, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 and KI. Everything else I've wanted came to PC. I'm ok with that, but it makes my Xbox One almost completely useless. I guess I'd just like a bit more justification for owning one even though I'm happy to play better versions of these games on PC, yeah weird.

I'm happy for Remedy. They make great games and I have a feeling QB will be amazing. I hope it sells well on both PC and Xbox One. They deserve it.

Reading some of the reddit comments on this (why do I waste my time with this) I can sense a lot of frustration coming out of those posts. Maybe because Xbox is a distant second, maybe because Sony is "in" right now and Microsoft isn't, I don't know. But maybe this is another indicator for them that Xbox is losing and all their "dedication" to the cause (lol) was wasted because they still lost so the only way to remain with some face is to be really pissed about this? I don't know, caring so much about this stuff is really dumb anyway.

That's an extremely good point. One that's even better for Remedy fans as this makes the chances of Alan Wake 2 even higher.

MS really needs to do well this gen, as does Sony, for the market to be healthy and thrive. If this helps MS make more money off their efforts and continue putting out good stuff, then that sounds healthy to me.

I can understand why xbone owners that purchased them specifically for some of these exclusives could feel burned and would have otherwise stuck with PC. It doesn't take a game away from them though.

I will say though that exclusivity wars are about to get a lot more interesting now, and I hope we can eventually stop discounting a game completely from a consoles lineup simply because it's also coming to PC.

Next gen is probably going to be more of a one ecosystem. With the Xbox as a standard low end pc with easy UI etc like you have now.
Then you have the normal PC''s and then you have tablets, phones etc.

Then they make them all crossbuy to.

That is pretty much what I want the next Xbox to be, with all the perks of a console. I also expect them to go for more power next time around as well.

But Sony's competition is not against Windows or PC. They compete against the console space, in this case against Xbone (and NX very soon). When Microsoft starts releasing on PC as well, Xbone sales will dive if/when people realise that you can get a better PC with the same cost.

If you're an Xbox player this move is not good. If you're a PC player this is great news as you don't need to buy a console for those few exclusives you might want to play. If you're a PS player, well, you continue to be a PS player as Sony can't compete in the PC space.

If you are an XBONE player you gain much more from MS going PC, the only thing you are losing is the ability to tell a PS4 your console is better.
You don't see what XBOX did? they sacrificed the console battle to win the gaming war, as a company they get more money seemingly for free, since porting these days isn't that hard, and can and will invest to win on the "exclusives" front, they will have the financial reasoning to invest in gaming, because as it is, XBONE isn't very profitable while Sony is considered the superior place to game.

It's time for the XBONEs to realize this move is just one move in the larger part of Microsoft's plan to consolidate it's services under one umbrella and use everything in it's advantage to maximize profit.

I'm going to buy QB, GoW4, ReCore and Scalebound on PC, 240$ easy, from a PS4 player, you get the idea?, they won.

I don't even get where you are getting either of those things from.
Well not everyone would otherwise people wouldn't make say things like that when it pretty obvious
The guy said MS and Sony should release all exclusives on PC.
I'm trying to get from what line of thinking other then wishful thinking would that be a great business decision from a platforms holder, a straight up publisher yeah I can understand.
But a platforms holder trying to sell hardware?
It's a nice thought but.....

As for the topic at hand, this is a win, win for gamers.
For the Xbox brand I think it's a lost of identity for the X1, why would buy a X1 for QB now if you have a PC?

Who cares if they buy the XB4? will they buy GoW6? that's the important question, because they could choose if they want to buy 400$ console and get GoW6 or buy a 1000$ PC and get GoW6.
Either way, they win, the only people getting the shaft are the PS4 only folks.

Don't know about that. The Gold subscription fees alone are very lucrative. Now if they piss away that money on all those ridiculous bundles and discounts they have been doing the last 2 years then maybe not so much.

They could potentially lose a $349 console sale, $60 XBL sub, controllers, headsets, console license fees, etc. Instead they gave money to Steam, Nvidia, Intel, Logitech, etc. They only thing they got in return was game sales. Maybe they just want out of the hardware business though.

Consider this, Gold will get reformed as a free service. very much like the early PSN.

Ok then you actually believe that XB1 games on PS4 is good for XB1 owners. Then your statement is just ridiculous and stupid. I thought you were trying to make a point but your were actually spewing nonsense.

The doomsayers are missing the bigger picture, despite it being spelled out by MS several times. They're trying to unify everything across Windows 10 devices so you can take "work and life" experiences with you on your TV, laptop, mobile phone, etc. Their CEO said he would use Xbox first-party IP and Xbox Live as an integrated play across all Windows 10 devices, to help drive consumer preferences for Windows 10.

It was almost a year ago, GDC in March last year, that Phil said that he wants Xbox gamers to think of themselves as Xbox Live customers. Using that you'll be able to play your Xbox games on any device you want.

I think as long as gaming hardware for the TV is a lucrative market we'll continue seeing Xbox hardware, and since it's Windows 10 then we'll get to play Xbox games on it. Given the Microsoft hardware team's current motions of yearly refreshes I wouldn't be surprised to see them go the Steam Machine route.

349$? the profit from the hardware sale isn't as high as you'd think, they make money from the games sales, and XBL, peripherals aren't exactly a console exclusive as well, so that venue isn't going away.

Plus, they can keep charging for XBL, or maybe try to go free and gain an edge over Sony and give more reason for people to game on the console, either way, they're getting at least 10 more million players from this move, that's not bad at all.
And they don't give money to anyone, they sell their games on their store, they compete with Steam, but it's not a real competition.

I really don't think people with PCs like that would want the console anyway it seems. They gain more business than they lose by a large margin in my view.

Man, this twitter thing sounds like a bunch of cultist attacking Phil. Some of the things they say are so illogical that I can't even laugh about it. It just makes me feel uneasy that people are so extreme over exclusivity and their platform of choice.

Fact of the matter is exclusives matter less and less these days in terms of determining gaming purchases, all you have to do is look at the sales of exclusives on a platform vs the sales of multiplatform games on a specific platform, and look the sales bumps cause by each game. MS has clearly noticed this trend and seen it's not worth it especially vs pc, to spend millions, for a game to sell mediocrely and hopefully bump your consoles sales.

They don't make money on console hardware and Xbox controllers have been the go to option for PC gaming for years. Those two things are non-factors in terms of losses. Game sales greatly outweight any of the things you mentioned. Also, what do you mean by console license fees exactly? If you're talking about the cut they get from multiplats it also makes no difference as PC gamers would never buy an inferior console version of a multiplatform game.

the only thing that really bothers me about this whole thing is the fact that online play would be free on PC versions of these games while you have to pay on Xbox. that seems shitty

Can't they just include both versions of game on the same disc at this point?
That's the only way I'd see it as a good thing for me and my XB1.

Since this move will cause more people to play and talk about Quantum Break, some people who aren't PC gamers will want an Xbox One to play the game after hearing (hopefully) good impressions from other gamers (whether they played the game on PC or console).

I honestly don't think this move is going to have much of an impact on console sales at all. There's really no negative to this.

More sales = more people who'll want the game after hearing (good) impressions from others.

I mean, COD and various Sports titles are also on PC but yet those games have helped Xbox One sales far more than any true exclusive.

You really believe they make $349 per console?
Really?

Really?
