It's a damn shame I won't be able to see it this weekend. It seems popular and missing out on the opening weekend atmosphere probably means I'll miss its cinema run entirely; feels like an empty theatre would kill the film.

Shame, but I'm glad it seems like it'll work out financially. For Ryan Renolds, Tim Miller and the other people involved in what is basically a passion project.

If Black Panther is the first one to outright bomb...I don't think I'll ever stop crying.

The name itself will stop certain people even giving it the time of day. I'm just waiting for the conservative talking points when the film releases.

Thought for sure this was going to bomb, but great news if it doesn't. Haven't seen it, but I yearn for more R-rated content

Imagine that, turns out people actually like superhero movies that aren't super serious with no lighter side.

This doesn't surprise me after how well GOTG did.

So very glad to see this. I expect this film to waaaaay exceed expectations domestic and overseas box office wise. Anecdotally, most of my friends are either seeing it tonight or Sunday for Valentine's day with their loved ones(me and mine saw it last night).

And you know what? The film deserves it. I hope Reynolds makes a lot of bank on the back end of this film, because I know he put in a massive amount of effort making it happen.

$100 million would be crazy...the biggest X-men movie opened to $102 million and it's doing it on a budget of only $58 million.

It's a holiday weekend in the US... probably won't do $100 million through Sunday, but could very well cross that by Monday.

As the OP noted, it's tough to extrapolate weekend grosses from previews reliably, but it's better than both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, and those opened over $90 million.

I really, really, reallyyyyyyyyy hope the movie does extremely well. I hope it rakes in $300M+ just so that we could get more...

Good to see this doing bank. I have good will toward Reynolds so nice to see him succeed here. And the movie sounds great. Not always into crass stuff but we mix it up here and there. Sounds honestly funny and apparently delivers unapologetically on everything from hilariously staged violence to hot chicks. Even, I hear, a nice bit of love story with Morena. May try to see this when had no plans to before.

Deadpool opening higher than Winter Soldier and GotG has got to be one of the craziest things in film history.

NOBODY would have predicted this. This is insane.

Cable is a nightmare to do on screen because explaining who he is requires a PHD in marvel literature.

The only way to do it would be with a completely different character from scratch that is cable in name only...and really, who wants that
Not really. Gun toting warrior/survivor from a post-apocalyptic future. Deadpool handwaves the backstory away with a comment on how complicated it is and a Terminator reference. Done

I love deadpool but no

That's actually kind of true if you look only at the post-All New Marvel relaunch numbers, although obviously not historically. Deadpool's solo is right behind Spider-Man's and higher than any other Marvel Universe solo book.

Definitely, the love story hit all the right beats and didn't feel forced at all. The movie got serious in the right places and knew when to pull back from the jokes. It was a wild rollercoaster of feelings (happiness, sorrow, to joy, then back to sorrow, etc) but it was GOOD. The pacing is pure genius.

This has to be Reynold's best performance ever, he was born for this role.

I had a coworker tell me her she took her preteen son to opening night and was pretty uncomfortable fairly quickly. She saw 'marvel' 'superhero' movie and didn't bother to research beyond that lol.

I have no doubt the kid knew what he was getting into, even if the mom had no idea.

I feel this gonna be common for the next week.

I'm guessing Taskmaster is with Marvel?

Miller confirmed his rights are with the MCU

Haha called it. Movie is huge.

These less popular superhero characters have been doing well . Guardians and now this (but Deadpool id say was quietly popular). both totally deserve it though .

Putting together a quality film with great marketing can do wonders to anything .

I was at the midnight showing and was surprised how packed it was. Had to quickly drive to another theater as my first choice was sold out.

Maybe the studio will afford more X-Men in the sequel.

I convinced about a dozen of my friends here at college to buy tickets for Saturday night, and we're all super excited about it. Telling some of the girls how much of Ryan Reynolds you saw definitely helped out...

Hoping to see it this weekend. Can't believe this movie managed to get made while staying true to the character, AND with a R rating. Glorious times.

Yep. If there was any situation where you could introduce Cable and give the most cursory explanation of his backstory possible without making it sound too self serious and still make it work, it would be in a Deadpool movie.

Teasing Cable just make me really want X-Men Apocalypse to end with the X-Men losing and Age of Apocalypse being the next movie.

How much did their marketing campaign cost?

I'm not sure if it was just particularly effective, or maybe confirmation bias, but it seemed like I was saturated with Deadpool marketing in the last month or so. I watched a 9:50 showing last night myself, and the theater was full.

For a Deadpool movie, I felt like it's about as good as it could possibly be. For a superhero movie, it was top 5. For movies in general, it was pretty solid. The action was good, and the comedy was great, but I'm not sure how well it will be remembered in a decade.

I'm mostly happy that an R-rated movie, particularly a superhero one, is doing really well.

Why is anyone surprised ? They ran the best marketing campaign in years.

Because its a Ryan Reynolds movie.

Because its based on Deadpool

Because its Hard R

Because its launching on Valentines Day Weekend

Because its staring down the barrel of making $100m+ this weekend.

Even though the marketing has been absolutely on point, I'm still reconciling this information

estimates i saw had this at MOST ~50 million for the weekend until the past week where i saw they raised it to 65 million due to feedback from advance screenings.

extrapolating just the ~13 mil thursday...i'm going to say it won't hit 100 million, but i think it will get in the 85-90 million range opening weekend- including thursday anything more than that is gravy.

Did anyone really think that years ago when this film first came up in discussion that this is what we would get?

I'm impressed and I can't wait to see it Monday.
