A bit corny but awww (she does not look like Luna though :P)

Pragmatically speaking Luna is just Stella rewritten for FFXV's plot.

Basically. They didn't even bother changing the middle name or surname. They COULD'VE and had every and all right to make it a completely different character ENTIRELY(even make her brunette or a redhead... though the last one, damn, would love a FF heroine that's a redhead).

The world ain't ready for a FF heroine with red hair.

I have not really follow all the news and stuff, since I still believed the game would be launched in 2020 like two weeks ago. So, is the game looking good so far ? Reason to by hyped ?

That probably was noruma's original plan lol. Didn't he say it was supposed to be a Romeo and juilet style relationship
The original plan was to have friendship between Noctis & the gang as the main motif of FFVsXIII and I remember Nomura's comments implying Stella wouldn't have been to Noctis what Yuna was to Tidus in X or Rinoa to Squall in VIII, at least not in such a syrup-y way. Maybe there would have been some developing feelings there, but as we remember from the early Versus XIII trailers, Noctis & Stella were possibly somehow "fated" to fight by some higher forces (maybe they were l'cie of opposing factions?), as their weapons were summoned as if against their will when they ran into each other on the streets of Insomnia as it was being invaded. I mean, I guess that might be a bit Romeo & Juliet-ish. Two young people who might otherwise be lovers, but forced to become enemies against their will by something they can't control. Even then, I remember Nomura downplaying the romance-angle when everyone thought Noctis & Stella were obviously going to have a typical FF romance in FFVsXIII.

That might've changed by the time they were switching to FFXV, though, if higher-ups thought that a big mainline FF needs a central romance. I doubt they were meant to die given that they had a whole "Versus Epic" planned, at least not both of them.

The Versus Epic didn't need to necessarily include Noctis after the first game. Also if the intent was for Noctis to die at the end of the games then it could have very well been a part of the original story. I do agree that Noctis and Stella weren't ever going to be really romantic but have a complicated relationship as you said made them fight.

I should make clear I don't want to see Noctis die I just like tragic endings and with everything this game has told us, even if it has changed, that it will be tragic. And with Tabata's two games
people die at the end

There definitely might be depending on what you're into.

If you're a fan of previous FF games, it seems as there are two basic camps.

Camp "I like FF for it's storytelling and presentation":
If you like FF for its storytelling and presentation. There is a good chance you'll like this game as it seems to be the truest embodiment of those aspects of the FF experience without compromises(no more linear map BS).
Examples:
  • Overworld returns as a seamless open world.(if you ever felt in a newer FF, "I wish I could go there" as you see something pretty in the background, this game is for you)
  • Gameplay and cutscenes look close to the flashy action that used to be exclusive to FMVs in the PS1-newer era FF games
  • Loads of old monsters return with their original Yoshitaka Amano/Nomura designs from the FF1-FF6 era.
  • Towns(and massive cities) are back, and they're full of NPCs, shops, inns, etc.
  • Chocobo Racing, Fishing, possibly a card game too.

Camp "I like older FF because of it's turn based gameplay":
Usually older FF fans that love the older FF's for the turn based gameplay. From their perspective, there's a good chance FFXV will feel like the least "Final Fantasy" game imaginable.

If you're not into the prior FF games, this game may interest you if you like action JRPGs, character action games, and/or open world games with an emphasis on story (like Red Dead Redemption where it's a linear story as opposed to a sandbox like Skyrim/Fallout).

I noted that this is pretty much one of the changes from Nomura's vision of Versus. Love wasn't going to be a major theme in that game.
Romantic love wasn't going to, but the love between friends or a father & his son? That was something that old trailers & interviews strongly implied would be important for Versus XIII and seem to have continued into this version of FFXV, however much they might've changed the overall storyline & things these people go through. We had flashback scenes in Versus XIII trailers where Noctis is running into Regis' embrace & quotes that made it clear how Regis felt about his son, a fun scene with Regis & kid Noctis in the E3 2013 re-reveal trailer and now the dawwwwww cute kid Noctis in the arms of his loving father in the Dawn trailer, so that's seemingly remained as a pretty central loving relationship from the early days of Versus XIII. And of course we have the guy love between the bros.

It'll remain to be seen just how big a part romance will have in FFXV, but that Tabata quote makes it seem like it's still not all that central. Maybe there is romance which is seemingly something that Versus XIII wasn't going to have (at least in the early days), but Noctis might not go all Squall on us by the end of the game even if that is the case. Even if Luna & Noctis will have a relationship that leans more on the romantic side, that quote makes it seem like it's not going to get too much screentime.

True. I personally got the feeling that Nomura not only had more in store for the whole world of Versus, but the characters as well. So Noctis' & Stella's relationship might've been something that develops throughout however many games they were planning. Not "lol, they all died, now let's find us some new main characters for FFXV-2!"

Bolded I get and totally agree with, if there were multiple games than yeah I would have hoped they survived the first game. Luckily though we don't need to worry about that anymore!

I am glad that FFXV is one game though. I feel like direct sequels to mainline has run it's course already.

XIII ruined all good will.

Anyone think that despite all of what's been said by SE devs, Stella might actually still be in the game?

Luna is Stella. Maybe they name some character Stella but now there isn't room for narrative for what Stella was going to be considering they couldn't make sense of how she would originally work for one game.

I mean maybe if they make her a jealous big sister to Luna or a twin or something that could possibly work. I still find it hard for her to have a place

Impossible to say since we don't know how Stella's role was to differ from Luna's.

If Luna is Stella, only slightly repurposed, I wonder why that warrants a name change.

What makes you say that?
I don't think we knew a whole lot about Stella

Appearance wise, come on now you know what I meant.

I guess maybe Tabata felt Stella was too "established" to mess with or something.

And before someone saya Stella and Luna look completely different I am referring to 2013 Stella.

He never should have changed her name.

They are clearly the same character, it's fucking dumb.

The name change was pretty pointless, I agree. They could have re purposed the character and made slight changes to her design like they did, but no point in changing the name...

Also I still don't like the Regis design.

I still need to finish Type 0. Got about 2/3 of the way, was enjoying it, but got sidetracked. Only game in the series along with VIII I haven't finished.

Too many games stacking up though. Still working through the Witness and TitS:SC, Fire Emblem about to drop too. Sunless Sea and Undertale in the queue, then before I know it Bravely Second and Witcher 3 Blood and Wine. Then the real heavy hitters on the back end of the year. Can't keep up!

Type-0 is easy to play actually and it's relatively short (25-30 hours). And it's probably the easiest FF plat.

If I were you I'd put TitS:SC when you're done with all the shorter games. The Kiseki games aren't known for being short actually.

I do hope I'm able to finish my backlog when FFXV comes out. I've got Cold Steel on the way, then Breath of Fire 3, Legend of Legacy, Hotline Miami 2, Lunar PSP, and Boy and His Blob.

Luna is a much cuter name and the symbolism associated to the moon probably makes more sense for FFXV considering weird stuff is supposed to happen to the moon.

Stella sounds like someone's grandmother's name.

My backlog is going to get even more jammed after FFXV hits. There isn't much hope for it.
