Breathe and relax.

Did this job pay better than your other one?

Why did she want you to take this job?

Let's just say you're incredibly privileged to even have a parent pull strings for you. Go to the job seeker thread to see what I'm talking about.

Yes, about $9000 more a year compared to my previous job.

She wanted me to take the job because "I'm good at math and am organized, etc."

At 28, i'll suck a donkey's shlong to get it

Seriously though, maybe if the OP was still a teenager and depending on parents for support...maybe just maybe...I could have understood this at some crap retail or fast food job.

But at 28 and a corporate job? At that age I had enough real world responsibilities where if you find something like that you don't just give it up (or don't even have a choice to).

I'm still in total disbelief.

So why is this a bad decision? To me, sitting around for 2.5 hours is a huge waste of time if you're not working at your job. I mean they could've at least sent him home since they obviously had nothing prepared for him for the day.

Yeah, usually the first couple days (up to a week) are spent getting to know the place and training. Sometimes they don't have equipment set up. The only exception to this I know of was in my last job (seasonal), where they put us right to work and expected us to pick things up as we went along.

I can kind of sympathize with your plight (I want to be busy too)... but you still fucked up.

2.5 hours of nothing and you quit? lol. I have a pretty demanding job and can be running around like crazy but on the flip side there are also many occassions where I have nothing to do for 3 hours or so.

You quit because you were being paid to do nothing?

I know boredom sucks and stuff but they would have eventually realized that you're on the clock and they need to get someone to train you to do work

On the other hand, quitting a job your mom got you after 2.5 hours at age 28.

OP do you live with your mum?

I mean a lot of people hate their jobs, but they have to earn money to live, sounds like you've gotten too comfortable.

you and op should start a club

Kind of. It was an online store and I bought our products for us to test in and sell.

I had guessed you were a game tester at your old job, so close. Explains it all.

I'll admit...all of my responses assumed OP was 21. As a 28 year old, though, maybe you should speak with someone professional, OP.

It's his first day. He was getting paid. For all intents and purposes him sitting there (at that moment) was doing his job.

Power brick for a monitor? I've had like 30 monitors and TVs and they all use the same 3 prong female plug. You could have just asked me op and I would have had it droned to your workplace.

He didn't want the job. His mother wanted him to get a "real job", and he took it to end her nagging, not to actually start a career. He left after 2.5 hours because it didn't fit his expectations of what a "real job" is and figured he'd done enough to mollify his mother.

And then he reveals he's 28 and has no idea how anything works.

Word. But to be honest: Tough shit. When you're 28 it's time to handle your business. If one is unsure how things work then just ask. 99.999% of people will answer questions and help. Really wish OP would have asked via mobile GAF before quitting his job.

Got paid to do nothing and quit? LMAO. At 28 it's just about getting some job experience.

Suicidal and homicidal thoughts should always be treated seriously.

If you're truly having such thoughts, I highly suggest you reach out to someone for help. That doesn't mean a video game message board. Emergency rooms at hospitals can deal with a crisis, if you have no social service or therapeutic contacts.

I am already seeing a therapist but I don't have another session for another 2 weeks.

You live and learn. It's not the end of the world and you'll find another job. At least you were there such an
Insignificant amount of time you can get away with leaving it off your CV so it won't hurt future employment opportunities. You definitely need to be way less impulsive and impatient though!

You never know when someone may get some time to come over and help get him set up. Why send him home when he's likely on salary and getting paid either way? At least if he is there, he's available as soon as someone can train him. Plus someone was actively trying to find him a power block for his monitor.

Ultimately if you aren't able to work in a corporate world, then don't.
Continue to work lower paying jobs, as long as you can afford the bills etc then there is no harm in it really.
As for your mother, tell her you are sorry, then stop answering the phone.

Because he's getting paid to do nothing, otherwise known as the Real American Dream.

Plus there's the old saying: don't quit your job until you've got another one lined up.

Alright op. Here's the plan to fix this mess. Continue job searching now and show your mom that you're trying. Your mom is humiliated but that's nothing you can do now other than apologize. Try your hardest to get a job so your mom can be proud of you and you can be proud of yourself. Erase this memory from your mind and attribute it to the devil possessing you for that moment lol. Comeback time.

This isn’t “start over there and get fries and drinks” this is a professional job that requires training of the accounting system they use and learning their processes. It’s not like you can sit down and start working.

See if you can get in touch with your boss and apologize, say you were nervous or something. Hiring someone is a pain in the ass and if the manager is sane I doubt that they want to go through that again.

If not, chalk it up as a lesson learned and move on, we've all done stupid stuff before, believe me, you're not the only one

If you got that job, you can get another one. Just don't put that one on your resume and keep applying to new jobs.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
Really OP? I'm cringing hard while reading your post. If you ask me, you did that place a favour by quitting.

Hopefully you learned your lesson for next time. Be more patient, otherwise no one will ever want to work with you.

Hoooooooooly shit dude.

I work in game dev and it took me three weeks to get set up here, due to some bureaucracy bullshit with our third party contractor. You couldn't last 3 hours?

Well, lesson learned I suppose!

You'll undoubtedly be fine... Just have patience, lol.

Sitting at work is not the same as doing nothing. The OP was waiting for things beyond one person's control to get settled. Obviously, it would have been better for this to be set up beforehand, but this isnt an uncommon occurrence. Businesses have a lot of moving parts, and everything doesnt get pushed aside because a new person is coming in.

They are paying him to be there and we have no idea what the rest of the day would have turned out like. They may have had everything set up by lunchtime and then proceeded with the training. A business isnt going to tell you to go home because it may take a few hours to get settled in. They are paying you either way.

The proper response is to wait politely and ask if there is anything else that you can do or help with since you are already there and eager to get started.

A new guy started today at my "corporate job."

He's just now (5 1/2 hours into his workday) being shown around the office and introduced to everyone.

That's just how it works.

It's called burning a bridge. Sure hiring someone is a pain, but after 2.5 hours he just gave his boss the clearest picture of the kind of employee they'd just hired. Yeah it's harsh but welcome to the real fucking world where your actions have consequences.

Because real life doesn't work like that. You start a new job sometimes it takes a while to get you started.

It happens, it's awkward but you deal with it.....because you want a job in the long term.

Look at the bright side OP, you will now live on forever as the funny anecdote that office will give to all their new hires the first day on the job.

I can't believe what I've read from OP in this thread. Is this real? Holy shit.

OP, yeah you fucked up. Take a breather. It's not the end of the world; I've been in some shitty places but you can recover and get back to being a positive member of society.

Get off the internet and step away from GAF for a while. Sounds like you should re-evaluate your priorities and think about what you want to do to make a day-to-day living for yourself.

GAF will be here when you get back.

Any chance to get your old job back? In the future, you gotta get some spine and say no. If you're happy where you are don't mess it up. You'll also get it a lot worse for someone when they vouch for you to get you a job and you make them look foolish than if you held firm in the first place. Again, nothing is so bad you need to do anything drastic. Your mom will recover eventually, but she will be pissed for a while about this.

Yeah, my boss said that I can have the rest of the week off and I can come back next Monday. He'll just count it as vacation days (good thing I racked up about a month's worth).

I see. Thanks for replying, this gives me a lot more insight into why you did things the way you did.

I would advise against killing your mother, you might get in trouble for that.

I assume you don't need the money right now because you didn't want to take the job, so you should have stood your ground and tell your mother to not force you into things you don't want. After you took the offer you should have at least been there for a while to appease your mother if you wanted her off your back and didn't want to have the "get off my back" talk.

In any case, hopefully you've learned something from this whole deal: don't take jobs you don't want (unless you really need the money, and then try and keep the job until you find something better). Don't let your mother dictate the course of your life (unless you think that's a good idea, I guess).

Anyway, best of luck and sorry I've been a bit harsh in my previous posts.

It's okay. I've been hearing it from my mom nonstop so this is nothing.

And don't worry, I won't actually kill anyone. She just gets to me sometimes.

I have learned from this, thankfully, and realize that corporate jobs fucking suck. I know I can be making more money than I do now but damn, if this is the way the world works, I don't want to be a part of it. That's kind of how the whole "killing myself" thing festered its way into my head.
