GAF, I've made a huge mistake. (Job related.)

I work in a warehouse where we buy and test in video games.
So no cubicle/office? A literal huge warehouse that stocks video games? A la a distribution center? Or are you an actual game tester?

Your job description is incredibly vague.

Yeah, I really don't get the secrecy.

Do distribution warehouses even test games? I've never heard of that.

I have learned from this, thankfully, and realize that corporate jobs fucking suck..

The thought process is the most concerning thing to me. Corporate jobs don't suck because the whole office wasn't revolving around you when you walked in the door. People around you have a lot of other responsibilities, and have to prioritize accordingly. They might have a financial report that HAD to go out that day/week, but if the new hire is idle for a few hours, no shit will hit the fan. The fact that they had to hire someone would indicate that people who would know how to train you might be overloaded.

Training someone sucks a lot. If I need help with my tasks, I can either work extra hours, or I can work extra hours AND work even more extra hours to train the person that can eventually help me. Add to it that there is infrastructure stuff that has to be tended to and there you go. Heck maybe the last person to use that monitor lost the AC adapter or accidentally packed it up when they were moving on.

I just want to thank you, OP. I literally LOLed while I'm at the park with my son reading your post.

The OP is the fresh-out-of-college, no-common-sense guy people make fun of at offices. Every professional business has experience with these types. In fact, people like the OP are the exact reason why many businesses are reluctant to hire new grads.

But it's all good, OP. This is just your first job. You failed spectacularly, sure, but you'll be able to find another job. Eventually, you'll look back at how stupid you were today and just laugh.

You know that a lot of kids go to school and that plenty of parents only see them a few hours each night before their bed time, this is not some corporate-only shit here.

You know, it's funny when you think about it. What kind of fantasy world do people live in where working a full-time job to provide for a family doesn't equate to seeing your kids only a handful hours out of a day? That is the norm for the vast majority of families.

Except OP is apparently 28

Okay, so what are your long term prospects for building skills and experience that will help you in your next job in case the current place goes under or they lay you off? What are your long term planning for retirement? Do you have any plans about the future at all? At 28, the clock is starting to tick on planning ahead.

Well, I communicate with vendors from all over the country and I have purchasing skills. The place I'm at now as a retirement plan but I haven't taken part in it. Although I think I should.

Nope, no cubicle/office. I do have a desk but I don't use it much since I'm on my feet a lot, which I like. It literally is a huge warehouse that stocks video games and other electronics. I buy the inventory and sometimes help test them in.

They were probably waiting to see if you were going to take initiative and ask what to do. Instead, they saw you on your phone for two and a half hours.

Oh well, there's always next job!

Geezzz, being impatient and demanding for self entitlement in your 1st day. Unless you're sitting for like a CEO position then geezzzzzz.

A bit of self-hubris maybe for next time?

Just curious, why did you take your Mom's offer then? Just to get her off your back?

It's seriously the funniest thing I've read in a long time. It was so funny I couldn't catch my breath. I had tears streaming down my face too. I was laughing so hard I spilled water on my keyboard. I also shared the OP and a few choice replies with a bunch of co workers. The OP may have fucked up but he made a bunch of stranger's days a bit better.

Can you just name the company? Best Buy? Because I still do not understand the "test them in" part of your descriptions. That makes no sense.

Jesus fuck...come on man. You were/are with this company for years and you didn't think signing up at the first possible second it became available to you was the right call?

Just curious, why did you take your Mom's offer then? Just to get her off your back?

He literally said this was the case, but now it is a lot worse because of today.

Yes, because she's very pushy and bullish, and I knew if I'd say no to this, she would bully me into doing it. But now that I didn't think this far ahead it's much worse than if I'd just said no.

I can't name the company since it is a small business. The used inventory we receive needs to get tested in to make sure it works properly. If it doesn't, then we sell it for parts.

This guy.

Hey stinkles, I know this guy. I think he'd be a great accountant for 343.

Cmon i'm begging you.

Give the op a chance.

hope he doesn't threaten to kill me

I think it's gamestop. Sounds a lot like the refurbish center.

Doesn't that depress you? That you can't see your daughter for more than a few hours a day? That your job is pretty secure as long as you keep your head down? Don't you feel like you could be doing something better?

This is admirable sentiment, OP, but you have to realize that under capitalism people need to work to be able to pay for their bills. Since they don't, for the most part, own things that can let them support themselves they must sell their labor to those who do control the means of production (i.e. the stuff at work that allows for work to be done), that is to say the business. Until either workers take direct control over the means of production and set their own schedules/pay rates or automation happens and causes mass joblessness (supposing it is controlled privately), to be able to support a family or even just yourself you must work.

Sure there are some jobs that have much more relaxed or flexible schedules but these are relatively few or don't pay enough for most people or provide the benefits they would need. The standard 9 - 5 office job is typically the best thing available since it's not physically demanding and usually would provide more stable job security and income than other sorts of jobs for people without previous experience; unless you have a specialized degree this is really the best sort of place to start at.

So yes, you goofed pretty badly. Don't do it again.

If you're interested in trying to change the way the system works, however, get involved in activism or a union.

To be fair, many people do not sign up for their work sponsored retirement plans.

It's why opt-out is much better than opt-in for retirement plan participation.

So I started my first day as a staff accountant at this corporate company. I've never been a staff accountant before nor have I worked in a corporate environment. I was really nervous about it and I wasn't even sure if I could stand being in a business outfit all day.

Anyway, I get there and after filling out the necessary paperwork, I'm left at my cubicle with nothing to do. My computer isn't hooked up since they couldn't find the power cord and they weren't even sure if they had done a background check on me. After filling out my background information, I was left at my cubicle again with no instructions whatsoever. I was told before that I was going to be in training but nothing happened.

So I just sat there at the desk for two and a half hours. I was on my phone practically the entire time and I was bored stupid. After two and a half hours I had had enough. So I went to my boss and told her that I don't think this is a good fit. I told her that they don't seem organized and told her that I wasn't doing anything. She told me that it's only the first day and that I'm in training. But I told her that I haven't done anything and I wasn't even getting trained. So I told her that I'm leaving and am going home.

And now I'm at home. I called a couple of my friends, my boyfriend, and my mom called me and they all think that I made a huge mistake and should go back and ask for my job back. So I called my boss back and she said "No. You're done." And that was it.

After getting told that I screwed up, that I ruined my future, that this is how the corporate world works, I'm feeling very depressed. It definitely hit me that I made a huge mistake. Why don't I just kill myself now and get it over with? I have no future anyway, right? Why does the corporate world work this way?! This is horrible! Maybe I'm not meant to be in a corporate environment. Maybe I'm just meant to make minimum wage and be stuck at some dead-end job.

I hate my life. Did I fuck up my future that badly?!

TL;DR: I quit a corporate position after doing nothing but sitting for 2.5 hours. And now I'm paying for it, I guess.

Next time this happens, find your manager and ask if they mind if you go down to IT and get your power brick/cord, and oh by the way, where is IT?

And is there someone you could get a tour from?

And is there someone in a similar role you could shadow?

And do you need a badge to get in the building, and is it Facilities that gets you that?

And is there anyone you might want to introduce yourself to and maybe make friends with? And group of people your age around your area of the office you could say hi to, and ask if any of them are going out of the office to get lunch that day, and could you tag along?

I've ignored clicking on this thread all day since I figured it would be some boring "millennial" crap. OP did not disappoint. I mean this in a good way, OP is fucking hilarious. I really have nothing more to offer that hasn't been hammered home in over 20 pages of comments. I cannot tell you the amount of times I've had "nothing to do" at office jobs, sometimes I'd use that to my advantage and sneak out early.

OP you couldn't chill for 2.5 hours while they got you setup and embarrassed your mother who got you the job. Now, maybe the job isn't for you but don't ask other people to ruin their reputations when you are unsure what the fuck you want to do with your life.

The OP's avatar, attitude, social awkwardness, and apparent dream job in video game retail give me a pretty good idea of what we're dealing with here.

A lesson I'm reminded of from hiring back I the day is NEVER hire anyone who's parents are the ones making the effort to get their kids a job. Those parents that come with the kids to the job interview and similar. Universally they are terrible unmotivated employees in both my experience and others I've spoken to in the past. OP is a textbook case.

It makes sense. You want to hire the people who really want the job.

And in this economy, there are plenty of those.

Working is a pain in the ass, spending the working hours doing nothing makes it into an agony, doing something at least makes time fly so you can leave work and live your life. That said it's crazy he didn't even try to confirm what at least a full week over there was about. Mindblowing.

Eh no big deal OP. You can't really lose for quitting after being required to sit at your desk, computer unplugged, nothing at all to do, all the while they claim you're in training (probably to get some tax credit money bullshit). Only mistake you made was calling them back.

Just look for another job.

Wait is this sarcasm?
