I'm not. I don't know any Japanese people that like the show. A girl I dated once told me she found the show very disturbing, both in the way it was drawn and its sense of humor.

The lack of Avatar is criminal. I guess it never came over? I would have figured it did.
Hm yeah. The big Moomin series was a weird Japanese / Dutch / Finnish co production, so maybe they didn't count it because of that.

It aired in Japan, but it did so badly that they stopped partway into season 2. The clip I saw also had really bad voices for the characters.
Japan likes terrible shows all the time, why do you think they keep making harem/fanservice crap.
RWBY isn't bad, it's just completely average

Further on The Simpsons note, I wonder how many Japanese appreciate that Itchy and Scratchy is a parody of Tom and Jerry.
That's a real shame.
I feel like we had a pretty good dub over here so I sort of figured if a Japanese one existed it would have been high quality too. Was it bad casting or more in terms of bad acting?
Wonder if there's still a Japanese Avatar fandom as small as it might be.
I mean like, the people voting didn't count it? It's a stretch I know.
All I know is that you can get some nice Moomin merch from Japan
From what I understand the Japanese fandom isn't really happy with the way that Beast Wars was treated (not sure about Animated or Prime), but it's not like that would impact how people feel about the franchise in general, especially if a lot of it is based on nostalgia for G1. I mean G1 did well enough that they made 3 spinoff anime for it and Beast Wars got 2. Plus Car Robots and later the Unicron Trilogy.

I guess I could see why RWBY would be popular over there, It's very clearly inspired by anime. I haven't watched anything beyond the first episode but it seems like a combat-centric mahou shoujo for the Young Adult crowd.
Voting demographic mismatch.
I'm not surprised at Tom and Jerry, stuff like Three Stooges and Mr Bean translate well worldwide and are popular in most places

Overall, it's a good list.
I mean, a lot of anime that have somewhat similar traits to Avatar burned in a dumbsterfire. Guardian of the Spirit had an amazing fantasy world, a strong female character and a wonderful art style with nice animations. But boy did it not sell. Something like Tom & Jerry is easier to pick up and to know at all, then a story driven series.That's a real shame.

I know from experience with Japanese or Korean gfs that The Simpsons completely doesn't exist in East Asia.
It's funny.. all the totally American things that make it into Japan... It's odd the ones that don't.
I'd have thought Japan would get Simpsons merchandise anyway.

RWBY really took off in Japan! For starting off with very iffy animation, but a good enough concept. Monty did something great, but 15 wouldn't be good enough for him.
I guess you're right. With Avatar its worldwide success made me assume that'd be the case for Japan as well is all. But if the dub is of iffy quality and never got completed I have to question how much of a push the series even received over there anyway. You can't expect a story driven the series to take off without one and I'm reading here Nickelodeon Japan was a failure in general. If it aired on there which I'm assuming it did considering the timing it really had a lot working against it.
I have to say I've never heard of Guardian of the Spirit though. Should I check it out?

Oh, you should. It's a novel adaption in a fantasy world that is inspired by a mix of medieval china and korea focused on the spear fighting mercenary Balsa that tries to protect a cursed prince from assassination from his own people. Take a peak at the trailer.

As for South Park, The Simpsons, shows like these (aimed very at adults) get extremely lost in translation. South Park did really bad in Japan because of this, so it stopped airing very fast. It's pretty bad in Japanese, imo.
Adventure Time is pretty popular here though, and it's easier to keep it as it is, even in Japanese, because it's airs on Cartoon Network many times every day. It doesn't have the same adult jokes and references like South Park/Simpsons. So much easier to dub it.
I always prefer watching shows in their original languages, but Adventure Time's Japanese is pretty decent.
I think Futurama might have worked, but we'll never know I guess.
The Cartoon Network dubs are pretty good, actually. Tom & Jerry is very dominating on the channel, so I can see why it popular. The Disney movies are a given too, due to the eternal Disney obsession in Japan.

The toys themselves are originally Japanese however in '82-'83 Hasbro had seen them at a toy fair and bought the rights and repackaged the origins and background (with help from Marvel, IIRC) and got a Japanese studio to animate it. It was a hit on both sides of the Pacific but Japan kept the series going on their own terms when the show was cancled in 1987.
Fun Fact: The 1986 Transformers the Movie would not be released in Japan until 1990. It was a shock for many Japanese fans to learn who had died in the movie (as the animators brought back some G1 characters to use in the Japan only seasons from time to time).

SF Debris did a really good video series about the origins of the Transformers franchise, for those interested.
Anyway, it's silly to argue that a show is Japanese based on where it was animated. Animation is outsourced to several places, and many anime aren't 100% animated in Japan. It's more logical to base it off of the intended audience.

Another thing to note is that Transformers is actually a combination of multiple different toylines (as explained more in the video I linked above). That's actually the reason why you have some Transformers that become vehicles and some that become household objects, like Soundwave.

Surprised Frozen didn't win this. I was there in late 2014 and I heard the Japanese version of "Let It Go" four or five times a day in conbini, on TV, in shopping malls, from amateur musicians in seedy bars, ...
