Early impressions start rolling out for Batman v. Superman

My buddy just got out. He feels the way I do about MoS, hates it, said he enjoyed it. "Still a Snyder film, but all the new players are good to great."

Take it as you will.

Ok, so here goes. I'll try to keep it as spoiler-free as I can.

I can see why WB had a hell of a time marketing this. This one...it's tough. It's hard to describe; there's a lot of moving parts and a lot of stuff to set up, which I think is a pretty big detriment to this movie.

I don't think the first act was very good. It felt extremely bloated to me. I generally feel like 2 hours and change is the sweet spot for movie runtimes. Anything more than that and you're pushing it. There were things I would've left out, or at least truncated.

Second act is what you want. That shit was fire. Pretty sure some of it was shot for IMAX (someone will have to check for me), because there was a very clear shift then. It's got all the stuff that I was looking forward to, and then some.

Third act...eh. Without going into spoilers, it falls into a similar hole that most comic book action movies fall into, which is fine, but I would've preferred something different.

Tone is very serious throughout the whole thing. Nobody's really dropping quips, instead they're dropping bombs. You'll like Affleck as Batman. That's pretty much a shoe-in. I like Cavill as Superman, but if you didn't in MOS, he's not going to change your mind.

My thing with Zack Snyder is this. I've always thought that he makes very fun movies. Things that you should see in the theater, because his movies aren't like others in terms of action. The flipside of that is I don't think he's made a very good movie in a while. And I don't think he did here. I think he made half of one, and then fell back into his usual pitfalls.

I'll be up for a bit, so I'll answer questions for a bit before bed if anybody has any.

Here are some impressions from my viewing tonight. I'll edit in some tags but I they are very light spoilers, if at all:

Alright, I didn't like Man of Steel but this was probably better than it. I don't know. It was a mess of a movie. So much going on and really paced oddly at the beginning.

Batman / Wayne was pretty awesome though. Probably what makes it better than MoS.
He murders though so that probably won't go over well.
Before going, I heard that Wonder Woman "steals the show" but, honestly, she doesn't do anything. She showed up in costume at the end, which was enough for some light applause (the only applause
during the movie outside of Batman's beat down at the warehouse).

I didn't really understand the
dream sequence section
with desert Batman. It's very hectic.

There are things thrown into this movie that won't do well for the "DC is just trying to catch up to Marvel" argument.

There was slow motion. Get ready to hear about that a lot in the future.

The destruction towards the end was, again, off the wall. Another thing that won't go over well, I'm guessing.

Finally, Bruce Wayne
woke up at one point and there was someone in bed with him
but without any indication of who that was, I like to think that it was Alfred.

edit:

oh, I thought the music was pretty great.

I was also glad it was a 2D IMAX showing. Lucked out with that one.

10+ positive tweets - "Meh, early screenings are always like this."
1 negative tweet - "I knew it was shit!"

That being said though, keeping my hype in check.

Pretty much what I expected, the good and the bad.

Thanks very much for the impressions.

About what I was expecting, especially in regards to the third act. Glad to hear the middle of the movie has some meat to it.

Really wish our first taste of Batman and Superman together wasn't so concerned with setting up a Cinematic Universe.

How would you rate it in regards to other CBM?

Thank you for the impressions, good sir. This fits in line with my expectations.

What theater did you see this at, being that we're both in Philly. I was at Neshamniy. Sat in the front section with my sister.

Sounds like every comic book film to be honest which isn't a bad thing....hope people are keeping expectations in check

BronsonLee wins the typing contest by a whisper!

Thanks for both your impressions. Been on the fence about this one. Not really interested, but curious. My biggest worry is how overstuffed it looked, which it sounds like it actually is.

Whelp, Suicide Squad not till August.

That review sounds about right. I wasn't expecting this to buck the trend of meh finales in comic book movies that we've been seeing a lot of lately, especially after seeing that doomsday was the finale. But I'm glad batman rocked and it's better than man of Steel. Looking forward to checking it out Friday

Lol at people assuming divisive automatically means shit tho. It's impossible for Snyder to not make a divisive film. His style is pretty different from the normal blockbusters and plenty of people are bound to not like it.

Anything after the credits?

BATMAN V SUPERMAN SPOILERS

There is nothing after the credits. Not a single thing.

You do not need to stay.

I was really worried when I saw people assuming it was shit because I said that. It just means it's not something that will be very palatable for everyone. It feels a lot less like a focus tested summer blockbuster (though it is) and a lot more like Zack Snyder woke up and said 'hey, I should have Batman double stomp the shit out of people!'

It's got little to do with his style and everything to do with his editing and story choices.

Hyped! I have no problem with divisive movies as long as I end up on the side that likes them.

The spoilers really havent arrived. This movie is so long and so much goddamn stuff is happening that whatever has been written by me or Bronson is so minor and has nothing to do with the plot.
Everything I mention was in a trailer.

I tagged some stuff in my write up but it doesn't really need to be tagged. Only for those most strict about spoilers.
