Is the PS4K a threat to PC gaming?

the draw to pc gaming on a broader scale is because of games like bastion, hotline miami, undertale, and rocket league. it's about accessibility and ease of use. it's about affordable software and variety. a more expensive gaming platform with expensive games isn't a big threat. if anything, i can see it working the other way if consumers start to realize they could be downloading big games to their computer instead of their video game console if/when they find ordering and buying physical games too time consuming.

The PS4k will be lucky to run games at 2K let alone at a usable framerate at 4K at the price point they're going for.

Besides virtually every other advantage PC gaming has.

It's still a closed platform ffs

Games with high end graphics are not the main selling point for PC. That's a pretty small niche market compared to the titans on the platform.

Hmm, I'd say it combines all the disadvantages of console gaming (lack of user control, limited input/output options, no modding, paid online) with some of the disadvantages of PC gaming (no "level playing field", multiple optimization targets).

I guess it's a matter of perspective.

I mean it could be that or..yea it's that

Honestly, I think it is, assuming of course that the rumors are true and that it is a more powerful PS4 capable of playing games at higher resolutions, framerates and/or quality levels. Obviously there are differences between console gaming and PC gaming, yet I think that at least some gamers who would normally build a PC at the later stages of the generation to enjoy better performance might now prefer to stay with the Playstation platform. Maybe some PC gamers might be enticed by a platform with the ease of use of a console combined with the performance of at least a current mid-range PC.

I mean.... All the real advantages of PC remain intact:
Cheap games
Free online
Customise your settings to suit your needs
Choice in peripherals
More types of games (bigger indie scene, mouse and keyboard games etc)
Can use it for way more things
Mods
Cheats
The list goes on.

What ever the ps4 adds it will still be a closed system and come with the same advantages and disadvantages that differentiate it from a PC.

Yup

All the while the industry keeps trending towards blurring the lines of these choices.

It would only be a threat if it can run new AAA at native 4K mostly at 60fps and it costs no more than $500. Unless Sony and AMD (assuming they are using their chip) have some secret sauce, I don't see that happening, so no.

I'll never stop buying graphics cards so I can play some PC games (mainly rts), but I'd be more than happy to get a newer ps4. I've tried many a time and PC gaming on its own, isn't for me. Maybe one day.

It isn't a threat, but it does entice people to stay in the console space though.

That would imply that PC gaming was competition to begin with....so No.

Maybe not on Gaf but gaming PC is already dead in a lot of places. Tablet, smartphone and console are much more preferable to the majority of people. PS4k changes nothing as most of the general public would opt for the cheaper PS4.

I can believe 4K Blu-ray playback, but for games? I'll believe it when I see it. I can't see any developer utilizing extra power for resolution. Instead, they'll just make better looking games at 1080p and 30FPS.

I usually chime in when the opposite is put forth but it works both ways: consoles and PCs don't overlap as much as you might think. All of the most popular PC games would not be feasible on console, much like the annual NPD winners don't do as well on PC.

Also, this:

The exact opposite actually. PC has never looked more attractive.

I'm most likely selling my PS4 to finance a Polaris card and HDR monitor if the PS4K really impacts the gaming side.

From my viewpoint it makes PC more appetizing. Why upgrade a PS4 for an overpriced cost instead of buying a much more powerful PC for what will be worth multiple PS4 iterations.

And even then it would simply be a temporary threat to the niche enthusiast market. But those guys tend to also love building PC's so I doubt it would do anything even then.

The much larger PC market is on low to medium specs and give no fucks about that stuff. Look at the requirements for the super popular PC games. They run on anything.

These threads really are the worst. I have never seen a single discussion about the platform wars in a normal fashion.

I would be so happy (copyright Craig meme) when dedicated gaming devices are gone and people can act normal again.

You must be asking a lot for that ps4! :p

You should look at how popular games like LoL and Dota are.

Neither really require high-end PCs.

Who needs LoL when you could be playing Killzone: Shadowfall upscaled to 4K?
Last year I bought a PC that costed me three entire salaries, and used it to emulate Ace Attorney Investigations 2 since it was never released in English and I can't read Japanese to play it on 3DS. Am I doing PC gaming wrong? :(

PS: if someone at Capcom is reading this, pleeeeease release a translated version on the 3DS eShop. Please!

And yet software sales continue to climb. Steam continues to increase in userbase and PC gaming hardware (not desktop sales) are doing quite well.

Gaf is a console focused forum with a strong userbase of PC gamers. But go to places like Reddit or Something Awful and PC discussion is the loudest there.

Actually fixed that for you.

Only if u didn't do it on 4k with 2 titans and 64g of ram

I don't know if it's the end of PC gaming per se but what the PS4K has done is to nearly nullify any advantages that PC gaming provides. With high-end specs and 4k output combined with the PS4's pre-existing architectural advantages like its supercharged hUMA GDDR5 multi-core architecture, its tough to see anything but the most extravagant PC being able to exceed its capabilities before the launch of the PS5.

With an abolished graphical advantage, there exist very few other reasons for gamers to substantially invest in PC anymore. VR is there and at a much more palatable buy in cost which will ensure better sales and thus better support. Crossplatform online play will likely roll out to most games in the future so gamers will still be able to play with their PC friends who don't upgrade to PS4K. We are seeing tonnes of formerly PC exclusive series and genres coming to console. Sony's award winning first party studios are finally hitting their stride and are bringing out the juggernauts around the same time as PS4K.

The PS4K already has such an enviable list of selling points, that it is hard to envision it doing anything but compounding the strangle grip Sony has had over gaming since the PS4 launched. It's hard to see PC coming out of the upcoming battle without at least a few scars.

Lol, I'm starting to sound like a Jehova preaching the same shit all over again:
What in the holy name of Jah Allmighty makes you so sure that the performance on PS4K will remain good!!?!?!?!?!?? Yes, the first games will run supah-dupah, then after 1-2 years the next engine (games getting more demanding) and next PS will come out, you're back where it all started.
You'll be buying new consoles every two years if you really want 60fps in AAA games.

Yes, I can totally see some diehards buying every new upgraded PSX. Their fault, because they'll end up spending more than PC gamers to keep up with res x&y, 60fps on consoles.
Just for convenience reasons. That's all.

Yes. Turn in your members card, you're done.

I started reading this post without looking at the user name. I got to "supercharged" and thought "it can't be..."
You've still got it.

those devices expanded the market they didn't replace it. People playing Clash of Clans on iOS wouldn't be playing Counter-Strike.

PC gaming has never been bigger. If you want to know real dark times go back to like 2002.

Certainly not if it just integrates the VR external box, supports UHD Blu Ray, and calls it a day!

Assuming it's actually a more powerful box with dev accessible power for better 1080p graphics rather than only allowing the same assets on 4K - then PC gaming would have never looked more appealing to me. I and I assume most others buy a console to know it will be the developer focus for the next 5-6 years. Start doing hardware upgrades every 2 years and the box you have probably isn't the developer focus anymore.

This majority of people would prefer to play on mobile than on ps4, even less on a more expensive ps4K.

Yes it is. It's basically nearly every advantage of PC gaming without the PC hassles.

And if more people choose iterative consoles instead of gaming PCs, the market size effect will make PC even more costly comparatively. Nvidia can't sell its graphics cards at the same price point if they sell even less copies.

Basically, if iterative consoles take off gaming PCs could be in trouble.

Seriously though.

How is this remotely the case?
