PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Omg yes everything I dreamed of and then some.

Now Spencer make da Xbone Elite even more powerful than this and the current one goes right where it belongs. Straight in the trash.

Where are we at?

Bargaining

Can I be the first to say, don't panic, OG PS4 owners. 2x the GPU power isn't nearly as much as you may think. It'll allow for more games to run at 60fps, but not much more.

I'm not sure that's actually the good part.
All things being equal they won't target a barely reachable 60fps for a game on PS4K but rock-steady 30fps with some more effects/draw distance or AA.
With even more headroom (but still being forced to release all games on PS4) they could just make all games 60fps, sure. Instead we'll may get less games hitting solid 30fps on PS4 and/or they will simply drop the resolution lower to get the similar experience on both platforms.

I don't see them going for rock-steady 1080p30 on PS4 and THEN see what they can do on PS4K. I'm just not that optimistic...
"sacrifices"

The best that can happen is that if they have both models in rotation, no one will go for the more expensive model so that devs are forced to cater to the majority who still owns a normal PS4. Thus, if it runs bad on there, they continue to get shit on for it.

As someone who doesn't own a PS4 I am thrilled that I can wait for the twice as powerful version plus the extra future proofing.

Turns out waiting was the smart move.

The better the PS4K is the happier I will be.

If there is a power difference between the new xbox and new ps4 it won't matter as much. The reason why xbox struggled so much is because it dropped below 1080p which is unacceptable in 2016. If both new consoles can both upscale equally well to 4k then it will go back to what controller do you prefer, rather than do you want a better performing game or not.

Well, if you want the best possible graphical output, you'd be upgrading your graphics card every few years as well for 300~500 dollars, depending. I know the precedent is different but still, not all PC gamers upgrade to stay in the "best" category. If graphics is the dragon someone is chasing, they'll be spending a console's worth of money on a graphics card or console model, if this PS4K stuff is for real. Either way, ideally there is room and support for a "middle" so to speak.

This thing in the OP doesn't seem like a middle to me. A middle would be 'all games going forward run at a higher resolution and more stable/better framerate, not 'people on PS4 will get significantly sacrificed versions of games.'

The thing is not drop.
The thing is focus.
If all games are made for PS4 with "bonus" on PS4K then "ok" ( I still dont agree with this but it would not be that bad)
But we are reading about sacrifices wich means games developed for PS4K and capped for PS4!

Exactly

I'm down for console power increments every two years. Last gen was fucking shit. And the new consoles are showing their age already (and before anyonr gets defensive im sorry but struggling to hold 30fps with little to no aliasing in most games already is not what I expected)
I suggested tons of times to not to play multiplat on WiiU. But whatever. Pay the consequences.

How is people that already own a PS4 okay with this?

What is so hard to grasp?

I can upgrade by selling my console [as in, not pay full price for PS4K], retain ALL my software, and gain access to better looking software. Yes that is same as PC approach, but I like console gaming and streamlined access to entertainment it gives me.

LOL at people saying they're moving to PC.

You guys do know that PC gaming updates faster than consoles right? You're gonna be forking out more or same in the long run.
People who buy top of the line PC parts and continue to purchase them year after year because they're 'obligated' to stay ahead of the curve form just a portion of the people committed to the PC platform. Most people will rationalize the investment like they rationalize anything electronic and expensive (like, say, a console) - future proofing precisely to avoid an inconvenient upgrade. PC games scale more intuitively and conveniently on top of that - a closed platform like PS4 and PS4K holds you exactly to the whims of the hardware and developer expectations with no room to maneuver yourself.

And as mentioned, PCs are a much more central part of your lifestyle than consoles ever were and will.

You dont see the PS4 getting half arsed ports from the PS4k?

A lot of games are designed at certain framerates and it's not always as simple as flipping a switch. Some studios have their cutscenes rendered for example at 30 FPS however in this case they would have to do it at both 60 and 30.

No they wouldn't. They would just play them both at 30. This is not new. We have had 900p/30 games on PS4 that release at 1080p/60 or higher on PC. The engines are made to be able to scale to different performance levels barring some shitty pc ports.

why are some here so against this?

you can still play the same games on your vanilla PS4 no need to upgrade to the new PS4 if you are happy with the vanilla PS4 graphics.

It's the fear of the PS4 vanilla versions not getting the due attention. The fear that developers skimp out on the vanilla version in favor of the 4k one.

I'm sure someone else can add to this.

Not having a trade in program would be really shitty. Not to mention that most people don't have 4K TV's yet.

Also, will there be a different price point for 4K games?

Uncharted 5 - $59.99
Uncharted 5(4K) - $69.99

OK so I'll have a vanilla PS4 in the living room and will buy the PS4K for the game room.

Still a shitty move though.

Related info from a meeting we had yesterday was waiting for it to be approved before posting.

Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.

Well, I say if they're going through with this, might as well go all the way and upgrade the CPU along with the GPU. No mention of RAM, so the previous leak mentioning RAM wouldn't change is likely true.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.

Likely based on Polaris, in the range of ~4TF @900-1000mhz.

I wonder when this would release, with PSVR this year I can see them wanting to get this out sooner, though as a consumer I'd be more comfortable with it releasing in 2017 with a 4 year cycle, rather than this year.

This is definitely a change in the console paradigm. Part of me thinks they should just go crazy and do a PS5 in 2017, rather than a half step. It will be really interesting to see what MS does, as they've be public that they're open to doing an upgrade of this nature.

I have no interest in spending 400 dollars on a gaming machine in the forceable future.

If they keep iterating I would buy the next revision. I hope they just keep iterating it like iPhones do.

Hopefully the games I'm interested in will run at an acceptable performance on the current model until a third revision/PS5.

... then these people should have already spent $1000+ on a PC. PS4 was -never- the best possible output. At any point.
It was for console only players. This is tough for me because I love the ease of console gaming, but the allure of no PS + makes me want to consider upgrading my PC. I guess I'll make the decision when the moment arrives.

Well while it's somewhat frustrating news because I bought my PS4 like three months ago, if E3 comes and Sony tells us that they're making all future PlayStation platforms backwards compatible with PS4, there's actually no problem at all. I can get to play these games with fancier looks when I get a PS5.

Don't know what's the logic with the "I'm done with consoles" posts.

Looking for logic? Here? With a bunch of people who want to actively hold back tech just so they can feel better about a $400 purchase that will have undoubtedly provided them with tens if not hundreds of hours of entertainment by the time this new model is on shelves? A $400 purchase which won't even be made obsolete by the new box.

No, I don't think you'll be finding logic here.

Here's my translation:

“It might be a while ahead, but we hope to show you something truly different from what was shown previously. In fact, since we announced it, the framework behind it has grown much larger to the point that what we had before may well have been a dud.”

Thanks.

So if this information is true it sounds like the PS4K is what they were waiting for to develop that framework.

I don't understand people doing this unless they really only care about PC games. The only reason I am building a PC now is because MS is releasing all of their exclusives their. If they weren't I wouldn't be doing it.

Let me help you: those who really care for spec bumps and are willing to buy every console Sony releases from now on are going to spend as much as PC enthusiasts.

Do the math:
You have bought PS4 in 2014 400$
You are buying PS4K in 2016 400$
You are buying PS 5 in 2018 400$

And don't fool yourselves - the PS4K power advantage won't last forever. In two years games will be released targetting at the specs of PS5 and you suckahs will once again play with 30pfs and below ;P
This is good news for everyone who was going to buy a PS4 soon. Existing PS4 users are
basically fucked, if they feel that their investment hasn't paid off yet when looking at the games being release in that time-frame.

I aint upgrading. I just got one last october. If they had a trade in option for heavily discounted ps4k i may consider.
Whats pretty dumb about this whole thing is now all games will probably be shit on the vanilla ps4 after the release of this new system.
