PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

NX dead on arrival?

Tons of variables at play here, most of which we know nothing about. I highly doubt the enthusiast crowd that buys a PS4K would make up the majority of the consumer base of the NX.

Yes I do care about my job and I generally do the firing =) . To clear up a few things though he did not make it sound like all games would be native 4k just that they would be scaled to 4k and we do have a tentative placeholder date for late Q1 next year.

Tried to keep my personal thoughts out of this thread but I really believe this move is all about the PSVR trying to look a bit better when compared to its direct competition.

They aren't.

So I was right.

Heard anything about a slim model for vanilla PS4? I think its coming this year.

Seems like a really dumb move with PSVR on the horizon. Do they want to move VR or new PS4s? Most existing users would be forced to make a choice between the two, hurting adoption rate of both.

It's actually pushing both markets by selling PS4k and PSVR in parallel. Whoever gets a PSVR will want a PS4k in the end, because you can't beat the laws of physics no matter how many time you reproject the reality. PS4k early adopters are clearly the most enthusiast fans, so they are more prone to get a PSVR too. On top of that, you have all these new 4k TVs just ready to sell. Sony's got you cover with everything.

My PS4 is less than a year old. I knew the generation would be short, but not this short. What would a PS4K, PS+K, PSVR, and a 4K TV all cost together..

It is ridiculous. I actually bought two PS4s, one for me and one for my brother as a Christmas gift just three months ago. Pretty damn annoyed at the moment.

Ohhh, late Q1 next year? Was betting on this holiday. Though i guess since it´s not a new gen, they could release it in a non-holiday period just fine.

Then i will cancel my prediction of this E3 reveal, you want a short announcement to release window nowadays in tech.

Gamescom? Definitely not TGS. PSX? Hmmm.

Problem is if Devs target 1080p/30 FPS on the PS4K, good luck getting stable performance on the OG PS4.
I think multiplatform game development will remain the same it's been: Games will be developed on PC and then settings for the game will be adjusted for PS4 and PS4K separately, with the PS4 version running at medium settings and PS4K version running at high settings and unlocked frame rate. I don't know much about game development though so I'm not sure what I said is correct, but I do hope developing games for many platforms won't become harder with the releases of PS4K and XB1.5.

Buying the PS4K because it got a 2x GPU upgrade is pretty much like buying a new GPU for your PC.

It really is. Price about the same too.

This would also effectively be a price increase on the console, and a big one at that. They can market new bells and whistles, but we're talking double the price here. Short of being marketed as a PS5, I don't think its gonna be flying off shelves.

Sony needs to rethink this. I don't know who this product is for. If this product is for Sony, to help push 4K TVs and Blu-Rays and buoy their other divisions, then they need to abort the idea quickly, cuz its a bad one.

But If it's true, I hope the product is rejected by the market. I don't want mid cycle console upgrades becoming a thing. Every 2-3 years is too frequent, and leads to buyer uncertainty. Should I really buy one of these new playstations or sit and wait for the upgrade? What if the upgrade never comes, what if it's too expensive? And what if that initial sale never occurs either? What if all the hype and buzz of a new console launch just evaporates? Truthfully, I believe this is the kinda shit that could lead to another crash.

Yeah it really boggles the mind. In fact Sony said themselves that they considered the PSVR launch a console launch and then they are going the launch a "new" console in the same time-frame.

Either PSVR games runs like shit on OG PS4 or we are missing something else.

"also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change. "

DOA if there isnt

You know Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, Gamestop, Toys R Us, etc.. would all offer at least $100 in trade-in credit for them toward a pre-order.

Hell, I traded my launch day PS4 to Amazon back in January for a $257 Amazon Credit.

Feeling really good about it now too.

Well crap.

I'm not waiting that long to get DOAX3 and a PS4.

CAN THE OP GIVE US THE NAME OF THE OTHER GAMES THAT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PS4K POWER?

He says there are more, give us the info mate!

I would expect games from most major publishers launching this Fall to try and use it unless they're coming out at an inopportune time.

Like I can't imagine DICE not using it for Battlefield 5 or Ubisoft for Watch Dogs 2.

Maybe Final Fantasy XV won't though given the trainwreck that development process has been and that it's launching in September.

Destiny is also an expansion pack so there's likely only so much they can do.

This thread... Jesus people, get your shit together.

Its an upgraded PS4, it will make future PS4 games look prettier and run smoother. If you don't want it, stick with the current model. No one is putting a gun to your head.

They haven't even announced the thing yet.

Yeah, but as a ps4.0 owner who has PSVR preordered, this has me hugely concerned.

Me as well. If the games are terrible without this system, I may cancel my preorder of PSVR. Not worth it to me at that point.

Funny so many people want to switch from the console market because of a possible upgrade. To a market that people pay to upgrade every year.

Haven't upgraded my PC in 3 years and it still plays everything on high at 60fps, people still say stupid shit like this about PC?

What are the other games?

The new Battlefield? :D

Regarding NX,

Nintendo has the possibility of those (optional) Supplemental Computing Devices for the home console..

Lmao.

Old hardware runs worse than new hardware. Who would have thought that.

I just can't believe it's only 3 years into this gen and they already want me to replace my console. Also this console I spent so much money on not too long ago is now going to receive gimped versions of games because fuck me. Leaves a really bad taste in my mouth and Sony have generally been fantastic this gen with PR and their general look.

2x the PS4 GPU is about a GTX 970 level, right? 4K gaming on a 970 is unacceptable imo, but perhaps with optimization it would run better?

Anyways, I think 3 year console life-cycles would be dumb. Sony's first party has barely even released games for the console and if the PS4K is the new lead platform which seems it will

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance

it will be a major slap in the face to PS4 owners. I expect 1080p/30FPS on PS4 games but I don't think most devs will care to optimize their PS4K ports on PS4 to hit that at all.

Count me in! As a current PS4 owner, I am REALLY hoping Sony announces a Trade-In Program where you can cut a decent amount ($200 or so) off of the main price so that you can switch over to the better system. It would only make sense, but time will tell.

No way in hell would anyone give you $200 for a ps4 when PS4K is out, your best bet is to sell it now for $200 on ebay or craigslist. Once the PS4k is out sonys best plan would be to drop the price of PS4 down to $250 if they still want to sell any. Expect to get $150 - $100 for a PS4 trade in at that time.

Have found my old moneybox I made for PS4 launch.
Started saving money right after they announced PS4 back in February 2013.

1271

I guess I have to add the new name to the box if Sony will announce the official name.

No way the will announce the new console at E3 2016 then or maybe they are stupid and they'll do anyway.

What differences will the PS4k offer for PS:VR over the normal PS4 in way of graphics?

If PS4k is going to offer a better PS:VR experience, then I may as well cancel my PS:VR order now.

I can't imagine the awesomeness of seeing something like a Red Dead Redemption 2 running on this hardware at E3. Bring it in Sony, bring it home.

Ok, let's talk about game licenses then...

If the PS4K is REAL, can you transfer a PS4 DIGITAL game you bought for your PS4 over to the PS4K?

If so, would it benefit from the higher-end hardware in any way? No so much resolution, but what about framerate and overall responsiveness?

Yes of course, the licenses for all games are tied to your account, not your hardware.

I can log into ANY Ps4 with my spn account and play all my digital games, and indeed download all my saves from the cloud.

I split my play between 3 different Ps4's at the moment. Add a ps4 K, so what ?

Interesting to see so many people reading Sony's mind on the subject when the few facts on the articles (eg. Kotaku) tell us that this is still "experimental", has no launch date yet, no specs, probably not a clear strategy and that's why we may no see it at all.

The OG PS4 won't be getting the "same games" as the alternate timeline where the PS4K won't exist. If the PS4K comes out, developers will focus their optimization time for that platform. The OG PS4 games will have framerate problems, glitches, and other technical issues because the developers won't consider it a priority. If the PS4K never comes out, developers can focus all their time optimizing for the platform, making sure all the performance is squeezed out of it.

To say that it won't change the quality of PS4 games is not all realistic.

In your universe the +30/40 millions users of "OG" PS4 are less important for the developers than the few millions that'll have a "PS4K". Not very likely, you could argue just the opposite.

I'm inclined to agree, but let's keep in mind that Sony is trying to also push their PSVR this year. Why would anyone choose to buy the PSVR if they know that in order to get the best experience possible, they need to upgrade to the PS4K?

I have a headset on pre-order, but I pre-ordered with the assumption that this would give me a great VR experience on the PS4. I'd be inclined to cancel that pre-order, if this accessory was originally designed with for a PS4K, but isn't being publicly marketed that way in order to increase sales.

I'm not going to spend $500 on an VR Headset, or any peripheral if I cannot use it to it's full potential.

Same here. Fully prepared to get rid of my PSVR preorder at this point, depending on when/how this thing will come out.

Man I'm frustrated right now.

Certainly possible. It will vary per studio and regular PS4 games will presumably get progressively worse as time goes on the same way cross-generation games got worse as we got further into this generation.

Making games that actually befit the market this generation is very hard, and Sony had a lot of smaller teams that weren't well oiled machines ready to tackle this the way 500-1000 person teams at Ubisoft or EA or Activision were. Each studio has to work on upgrading their own engines and toolsets as well since they're not a shared stack, and they weren't making PC games where they could do a lot of the work early to boot.

It needs developers putting in the effort to make something like this work out, and unless they fail cert for not doing a better than good job, this can turn into a nightmare. If this is a thing that won't happen until next year than most games coming out will not take advantage of this.

Do you remember what some of the other games on the list were/are?
