Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

At the end of the demo Noctus felt like he controlled much better than in the previous demo imo. I wasn't a fan of the combat in the last demo and I'm interested to see how it turns out.

The demo is nothing more than a technical showcase of SE's engine. The circular plates to change lighting, day cycles and weather more or less confirms it.

they dont look the same at all... resolution alone i would think youd want it on PS4... but playing both side by side... the difference is absolutely noticable.

Why are you trying so hard to tell people that the PS4 version is better?

When i look at the screens i dont see any difference besides the resolution.

This game........ needs to be good.
I feel like I'm missing some nuance that is going unexplained. If the combat is just like this throughout the whole game... I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy it. And I have the CE preordered ffs.

I'm still going to try and stay optimistic because no doubt there will be more cohesion to the full game, but these 2 demos have not really done it many favors imo.

Practice fighting the iron giant and learn the nuances of air warping. For instance: if you jump and attack and hold down on the analog and press attack Noctis will evade but If you press up he returns back to enemy. I believe you can attack/dodge by pressing left and right as well.

The truth is I think the demos biggest flaw is it doesn't represent the quality of what FFXV should be. It's too early and too simple.

But if you see this as the bare minimum of the combat system I am intrigued to see where it goes.

You're correct that if someone really wants to know more, theres tons of media for the game. The problem is that there are a lot of people who will either watch or play this demo, decide its bad and move on. That's it. They won't give the game a chance beyond that and as someone incredibly hyped for this game, I find that frustrating.

Even with Duscae, as early as it was, there were still moments where all the elements came together just right. Fighting a group of enemies with party members in this huge world with beautiful animations, amazing music, and the sun setting in the background. Walking into the Chocobo ranch and having your party members separate off to do their own thing, Discovering a dungeon and fighting a bunch of goblins to get a really cool summon at the end. The new trailers today do this as well and ,imo, show perfectly what the game will be like. These insane fights with good graphics. Traveling with your party in cars, boats, chocobos, etc. Stopping at a rest point, playing mini games, etc.

I know Tabata has said that what we were getting today was a tech demo but if they were gonna do that, I think they should have just provided something like the TGS 2014 demo. At least in that, you have your party, can see day night cycles, weather, and you get to test the battle system.

I really just want other people to be excited and enjoy it as well because I feel this game might be something really special. Maybe I'm being dramatic (there was a huge event and all) but impressions are extremely important and it sucks when people miss out on anything great because the first one was so shitty.

If the game is actually great at launch then you shouldn't worry. Also I think most who are just casually into the game won't look that deep into it. My friend played it right now without ever playing a FF game and he told me it's pretty cool and that it's really pretty, that he likes that it's like Kingdom Hearts.

There will be some that won't like it and that's fine but I think just the mere fact that it's not turn base anymore will attract a lot more people, despite it losing some of the older fans along with it.

Do you have to beat the whole thing in one sitting?. I was under the impression the game saves your progress but I don't see continue in the menu.

Just got through the demo. I was pressed for time, so I didn't spend as much time as I probably would have otherwise, but it was a neat little thing for me. I didn't play Duscae, so I don't know how it compares. I'm generally tolerant of frame rate issues, but after spending some time PC gaming, the difference is really apparent. It doesn't really hamper my enjoyment of the game, but it does make me consider waiting for a PC release. The aliasing doesn't bother me that much either, but knowing it could be better on PC does make one think.

As for the actual gameplay, I kinda liked it. It's dull as kid Noctis, but playing as Noctis in the finale was pretty cool once I learned you can warp around. I think mastering the combat would be pretty fun, but I can also see how it might be boring for some. The camera work was pretty janky, though.

I don't like holding down the attack / defend buttons. It makes the battle gameplay feel sluggish, especially when you have to release attack then hold defend to dodge attacks that come quickly. The magic seemed off; every time I attempted to use it I missed because the enemies kept moving and their is a slight delay when casting / throwing or whatever Noctis is doing.

Graphics were ok. I experienced numerous hitches in the frame rate.

Music was amazing. That battle music!

Overall I think this demo is not a good representation of what the final product may be. I understood this was a tech demo, but I think those that didn't watch the FFXV uncovered event are going to find this demo, download, play, and get turned off.

fps issues was the first thing I noticed in the forest area. although it smoothed out later in the house and city.

not sure if I understand the combat system. anyone have gameplay with someone doing anything other than holding O or Square?

yup. they should have played the trailer at the end to show what the main game is going to be like.

Mixed opinions on this demo.

Combat is extremely basic. It would need to improve a hell of a lot to make the game worthwhile and not a chore.

Graphics are a mixed bag. Great lighting, good art direction, interesting use of softening/depth of field to hide aliasing, but there's a really obvious low res and jaggy look to it for the most part.

Oh and the demo is like 5-10 minutes long.

There's no need to hold them down. You can simply time the button presses and it works perfectly. There's a pretty big window for the dodging, so it's not tricky.

Don't worry - you can occasionally press Triangle as well for a more engaging experience.

The hold to defend is only for heavy attacks, holding drains MP by just a simple press you have regular dodge/roll. You're not supposed to just hold it all the time. The combat takes some time getting used to, personally I'm in love with the short air warps since it requires precise timing if you're off the giant will grab you and squeeze you to death. You have a lot of mobility at your disposal experiment! Analog in different directions does different things.

A lot of people are saying the combat isn't good in this demo. What has changed from Duscae? I personally thought Duscae's demo was pretty enjoyable.

I'll have to replay and try this then. I don't know why but the combat just didn't click with me.

If you liked the combat is Duscae, you'll probably like this. You only get to use the full combat on one boss, but it's better than the Duscae behemoth fight.

Thanks. The warping does have me a little confused but I'll practice with what you mentioned.

Agreed.

I enjoyed this demo a lot more than the old one. It feels like playing Kingdom Hearts at times, which is nice. Magic spells are pretty, especially at night.
The battle system is much improved now. Though there are only 4 slots, being able to pick your weapon on the fly in great.
The camera is somewhat better, but still wonky in places. Also, having to manually turn it with the right stick all the time is kinda suck. Maybe there is a trick to this. It would be much better for it to be more like the one in KH.
Jumping feels unnatural, glitchy in places, just serviceable. However, I don't think jumping is major factor in this game, compared to KH.
The lock-on system is better, but it seems like it's still not possible to switch locked-on target, and to lock-on to object. This lock-on should also be more like KH.

Overall, this demo is plenty of fun, I like it. There is no reason not to give it a try.

Agreed.

Check this small sample

Why? I really felt like I was a child again playing as him. It was cute and meant to be easy. I appreciated the environments more than the combat, lol. Adult Noctis combat was super fun though.

Kid Noctis was a sample of exploring and even getting a chance to drive, it's pretty much a small sample on the big things on the final game. I think people confusing his section as a demonstration for combat are wrong.

A majority of the combat in this demo did not give a good impression at all. And the tiny amount of what it's actually going to be like wasn't much better, just throwing you in not knowing what to do.

Otherwise it was a fantastic taste of what's to come.

Are you talking about kid Noctis ?

Yeah.

The game feels like it's on some kind of semi-automatic mode from Tales series (but worse, because at least you don't button hold your way to victory in Tales's semi-auto mode). It's like the game assumes you are an idiot. I ended up beating the demo, and I do feel some improvement over Episode Duscae in certain ways, but I still wasn't impressed. It's the basic of the combat they didn't get it right for me. Attack and defend. I don't care all the cool flashy air combo and warping strike if they don't get basic combo attacking feel accurate and well, good. Ugh.

I feel the purpose for kid Noctis is not meant for the combat that's why we have adult Noctis who's way more mobile. Kid Noctis is not even a huge part of the game so I don't know the concerns.

Found the demo to be boring. Noctis moves like a stiff corpse. Some of texture work was really low res. Prob due to it being a demo. But it didn't get me excited or interested in the game at all. Combat wasn't interesting either. It was literally hold button to attack. What a waste of time.

Wow, that demo sure was literally just Kingdom Hearts, huh? Right down to the whole Alice in Wonderland running around in a giant room.

The demo was pretty neat! That critter thing was really annoying, though. Constantly sqeaking at you just in case you didn't know which way was the right way. :P

I enjoyed when the levels opened up a bit, running around looking for those glowing crystals was fun. I wonder if those will carry over. Otherwise, what was the point?

Also I didn't like the controls of any of the transformations. Some of those vehicles felt slower than Noctis running himself. :S Also, "steering" that crocodile was just frustrating, and lining up the attacks of those summons with no lock on was a hassle!

I don't think the demo did much to hype me, but it was fun enough. I preordered the game, so I guess they fooled me!

I feel the purpose for kid Noctis is not meant for the combat that's why we have adult Noctis who's way more mobile.

I know adult form is more mobile and capable of more things. Did you notice when you are in battle, you press attack facing one direction and Noctis will somehow turn to attack in the other direction? I think if monster is locked on, Noctis would swing his weapon towards the direction of targeted monster. How stupid is that? Or was I missing something?

I need to go back tomorrow and mess around with the air warps on the final boss. Didn't really think to do this.

Even after this big event I still think this thing is getting delayed.

Strange reactions on here. They said for months this was going to be a small tech demo with a chance to try out the basics of the game. That is exactly what it is plus it has some scenario. They seem to have delivered what the promised.

I didn't felt fps was huge issue. I felt some kind of blur which I don't notice during the cut scene was more problematic.

I can understand who said battle system is junky, the response speed has to be improved more. Iron giant fight was good though.

In visual term, lighting is amazing. But IQ, especially young Noctis's hair and face is not good. I felt AA was good for environment and objects(Regalia's jaggy decreased dramatically). But character model seems to be downgraded compared to Duscae(that was the best part of Duscae though) because of the AA issue I think.

But there is still time to improvement. I fall in love with this title because of its world setting. I'm cautiously optimistic now.

Not sure how I feel about this demo to be honest, or what the purpose of it actually is. Visually, it's very uneven, with certain textures looking great, while others appear shockingly muddy up close. Combat wasn't really doing anything for me either until that final showdown with the golem creature, but I suppose that was the point, maybe? Hopefully?

So yeah, as a showcase for the engine, it was very inconsistent minus the impressive animations and lighting, and as a way to demonstrate the combat in a simplified manner, it just felt relatively boring to me. So again, not really sure what the point of it all was, but I guess it's cool to get a demo as opposed to nothing at all.

Thanks for the responses, guy, I'll try the demo this afternoon.

btw, now the meme is "XONE has pale trees" or what? How times change.

Didn't play the other demos, stopped playing this after like fifteen minutes. Oh my god what a boring thing to open a demo with. I hated everything about it. The annoying creature, the terrible phone messages, the sound design, the controls, the jumping, the basic combat system of hold down button to X.

I know myself, I wont find it anymore enjoyable when I get to the "real game". Oh well.

I don't doubt the PS4 version will have better res but this third pic looks like there are different weather effects going on. Might not be the most apt comparison.
Something worth considering since you can manipulate the weather with those switches. They could both be different shots of different times of day and/or weather effects.

And it was made separately from the game.. I mean sure it uses assets and everything but they said quite clearly that it is removed from the game...
