Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

The game looks so blurry that it looks sub 720p to me. Nothing is clear and it makes everything seem completely flat. I really do not like this look. It's incredibly off putting.
Also the part where you become tiny looked like had no lighting at all...

Sigh... at this point I can't even get too disappointed over downgrades, it seems to be a given anymore.

So I didn't play Duscae, and didn't really have an issue with the combat. I worked it out easily enough, any issues can be improved with practice and hopefully a better camera. That said, it wasn't exactly exciting gameplay, I know there will be more to it in the final game (I hope) but it wasn't very satisfying.

The demo itself was ok, I'm not a fan of demo's in general so had pretty low expectations of it. I actually thought it was quite sweet, Carbuncle is too cute and I named him Gizmo. Not sure what the purpose was, it hasn't sold or unsold me on the game, I'm actually more concerned now than I was before because the general controls are pretty clunky.

Also I hope this is an old build because the graphics weren't exactly impressive, some parts were, but things like grass and foliage were pretty rough.

I did not even know there was a demo available to everyone on the horizon, on my way to work but PS4 should be downloading it now ;)

Just finished the demo on Xbox One, pretty good demo, especially the ending battle of course, gameplay really feels like Kingdom Hearts now
Though i'm worried about performance, on Xbone the frame rate is pretty unstable, it's low almost all the time and during the battle against Behemoth, especially when he attacks destoying the environment it drops to something like 10fps or worse...I really hope the full game will fix that or even better that they'll release a PC version

You know those RPGs where you can't directly control your party members but can tell them to be aggressive or defensive? This feels kind of like that, only it's your only way of controlling the only character you can play as. Noctis exists in the world of an action game, with full 3D movement and enemy attacks that need to be dodged in real time, but you can only interact with that world through the commands of an RPG. I say 'commands' because that's how it feels; like I'm sending him commands through a megaphone or something, rather than directly controlling him.

I'm fighting this big dude and everything I see on screen is getting my action game reflexes firing. "OK, he's winding up, I'm going to dodge this attack and then wail away on him". Except, in practice, I'll probably dodge the attack, run in... and Noctis might attack. When he's ready. I commence holding the Attack button and then I just have to wait for my character to find the time to get an attack out. Sometimes he'll dodge attacks, sometimes he won't. Eventually I just stopped Dodging altogether and Warped instead, because at least that feels like I'm actually playing this video game rather than watching it play itself, but even then it's dreadfully unresponsive. This combat system feels terrible.

Atrocious framerate, cant believe they released this demo in such a state 6 months before release.

Everything points out that this isnt the game that will bring back the good old "square" I long for.

Well that demo was a waste of time. Especially considering it was public. Can't see who it's going to attract that wasn't already interested. Feels like a waste of resources

It felt sluggish and overly simplistic, and I dunno if it's just because I've been playing a lot of games at 60 fps recently but the framerate felt barely tolerable. I've also never found myself complaining about a lighting system in a game before but it kept bothering me in this demo, like everything was blown out or too dark to the point it just became black and indecipherable. It felt like a game that was super early and needed a ton more work. I'm much less interested in playing it on a console now that I've played the demo, I think 60 fps would benefit this game immensely.

Another thing that I thought wouldn't have been an issue after seeing footage of the game was how static the world felt, which is something I've always had issues with in JRPGs but thought this game might be different from what I'd seen of it prior. Nope, environments still feels super static and fake... like it's too obvious it's a game and not a real place. I know it was supposed to be dream-like but even discounting that, it still gave me the same feeling a lot of other JRPGs have given me.

I hope the people that got disappointed by the combat realize that this demo is missing:
-weapon variety
-weapon skills
-party commands / team-up attacks
-quick warps, perfect-timed evasions, armiger manouvres

Sure control weren't well responsive and they didn't put any form of tutorial for the last battle, but please don't judge the final combat system based on this demo!

For the demo itself, it wasn't bad: you get a basic grasp of movement and exploration, combat, the more fantastical elements of the game and the tech that supports it.
They could have chosen something more closer to the game itself, but i like it's experimental nature.

Just hope that people won't change their purchase decision based on a tech demo.

I understand all that. That's why putting out this demo as the only widely available one for the general public seems so baffling. It is misrepresentive of the final product but most people who play it won't care and will judge based on it.
is it up on EU yet?
Yeah downloaded it an hour ago and it was probably available a lot earlier. In the UK at least but it should be the same.

The Iron Giant model seems to be awkwardly built and Noctis ends up whiffing a lot of atacks if you just hold the button so it looks pretty bad. There doesn't seem to be any tells for the unblockable attacks? Duscae didn't lack these issues entirely either but the smaller scale enemies and slower weapons made Noctis' actions appear more directly mapped to your button presses. Not to mention you also had three hours of the full battle system instead of a single battle with one enemy and one party member. It's just weird.

Don't know about you guys,

but I spent way too much time messing around with the toy block physics...

This is my first time playing anything FFXV related, and I am pretty happy with it
game looks absolutely gorgeous at night.
Little Noctis looks a little rough but overall it feels like a current gen Final Fantasy, like everything felt familiar.

Wish there was a little bit more to demo, but it provided enough for a first hands on.

Now I'm just staring at the title screen and listening to that sweet music...~

Tabata said this demo wouldn't mainly feature battle system in january, and now I strongly think that he had to say that louder or omit whole battle in the demo.

FFXV's core battle system is called Active Cross Battle(AXB) which is inseparable from buddies. Without buddies, the game can't show any kind of advantage. Just keep pushing system is obviously for making it easy to look around warfare and order Ignis to do combo attack.

I know final product will include AXB fully, but for the newcomers...

The game is clearly far, far better than this demo indicates (Duscae players know this)... but man, I don't blame newbies for taking away the message that FFXV is in trouble.

It's been established by data that the average demo might actually lessen interest in a main game. Well this demo, especially so.

I honestly think if you could turn back the clock 12 hours and cancel this demo, you'd increase sales potential :P

I've played both episode 1 and 2 of ED, and it was about as bad as this demo combat wise, even if ED did have more options in battles like weapon abilities, cross chain combo and such. I mean there are some improvements here and there, and I prefer manual weapon switching over the trash tier crush ravage thing, but now I really don't know what to think of FFXV's gameplay. I also don't like how Magic is now consumable to an extent, but maybe there is another kind of magic not revealed, which was previously hinted. Air warping was kinda cool, but it just feels shallow for now.

All in all, I am disappointed. Sorry koozek, benzy, Noctisvsstar and M_Night. :(

I think it's fair not to like the combat of Duscae or what is likely XV final combat... but you've got to admit, this demo barely even showed it.

I mean, you can fuck around in that last battle to test at the limits of the battle system, but that's not even the same thing as a game campaign which takes you through it with multiple enemies and abilities. The first 3 sections of this demo showed XV combat at its most rudimentary.

Interesting decision to release this to the public to hype them up for XV; even when disregarding combat completely, everything from music to world design was incredibly stale. If this was supposed to be more of a tech demo (which I'm guessing it's meant to be since you can spawn a bunch of glowing balls and change the time of day, weather, etc), it wasn't impressive in that aspect either.

At least I have my hype in check for XV now.

I think they really destroy all the hype they made during the conference for this demo. This was clearly the testing ground or a BIG tech demo with the switch and everything. The combat feel a little better then the first demo thought, I'm not sure i like the limited uses of Magic spell, the MP is useless for spell ??

Truth.

it's weird because i was watching the video they show they invade a enemies base or something like that, this was looking fun and fluid.. not event near of the last secton of the demo. I was holding dodging and sometimes it was working, other time not.... And Air combo didn't seem to work well, teleport also feel weird....

That demo was embarrassing.

"Look at how pretty our game is! Look at the weather changes! What's that? The game play is garbage? Didn't you notice the night turn into day though?"

After playing the 13's and this demo I'm convinced square doesn't know how to make a proper game anymore. Good thing they have Tomb Raider and Just Cause to keep them afloat after this game bombs.

Wow at the overwhelming negative reactions here.

I think those who played Episode Duscae will think this demo is fine but won't write off the main game, which is hardly comparable to the demo. The demo was nothing more than a "tech demo" and they definitely dropped the ball on how to showcase it properly for combat.

That aside, I feel the combat has been improved from Duscae and the weapon switching is now a breeze which makes the combat much more enjoyable to me. But there is hardly any worthy battle to test out the combat, sadly.

Wow, with how limited your combat options in this demo are, shield is the best weapon. It feels the best and it's kinda satisfying to tank massive swings with it.

They didn't think people would have strong reactions to the first public demo of a game that some people have been waiting 10 years for?

Yeah I'm in that 10 year club too. You'd think 10 years would give people the ability to understand what they're playing.

You're missing my point. I know there is going to be a lot more to the final game's combat than what's in Episode Duscae and especially this demo. Of course there is. However as long as they don't make the fundamental things like controls, basic attack combo, defend, attacking animations and anticipating enemy's choreographed attack right, it's hard for me to care what other mechanics the game has.

Something about the control of Noctis feels weird, especially during attack. It's as I said before, the game feels like it is in semi-automatic mode. Whatever command has some kind of automation behind it, sometimes are delayed, sometimes against your will. Very subtle things, but when you play it, and then you played other Action RPG, you can feel the awkwardness, the clumsiness, and hectic-ness in FFXV.

On the surface, FFXV looked like it's similar to KH, but when it comes to smooth, responsive gameplay, FFXV is nowhere near the level of that of KH. Give FFXV 100x more game systems to it and it wouldn't matter. It's the damn fundamental of FFXV that doesn't sit right with me.

I knew it didn't look anywhere as good as that video.

Yeah. You get there and it's like "oh... This is the place..." even when you fiddle with the lighting and rain and it looks nice, it still doesn't look as good as the re-reveal.
