Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

Honestly, I didn't think the graphics looked particularly good on this demo, and I'm not talking about the fidelity either. Like the art direction felt kinda flat and bland. The raining effects and lighting are pretty good, but not quite mind blowing either. Maybe I want to see more of new places, as the courtyard in the demo is just that, a courtyard. The cartoonish area look okay, also not particularly great looking. Since it were a dream, they could make the art style really cartoon-ish, like how KH2 actually made the art style completely unique and even more like cartoon in certain worlds.

And the music, I like the ones in the trailers, but the ones in the demo were just average. The music in the Japanese Uncovered trailer, the first one, sounds as if it was composed by Two Steps from Hell, and it reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASj81daun5Q

Surprised at the reactions here. I haven't played yet myself - heading to the airport right now - but I'll reserve judgment until I get my hands on it.
Not too surprised myself, the overarching theme is performance and that can be fixed. People who are complaining about the combat are blindly judging a system that isn't fleshed out in the demo. No full array of weapons, no bros to have cross skills with, etc. That's like judging FF13's battle system without playing through the first 1/3 of the game when you get the whole thing going.

Wait this is a demo what are people complaining about?

"The purpose of the demo, according to Square Enix, is to give players a look at the finished game's visuals, as well as introduce them to the final combat and magic systems."

People are complaining that the "finished game's visuals" are poor, and the "final combat and magic systems" are janky.

It's worth noting that these things were also problems in Duscae 1.0 and 2.0 (to a lesser degree), and we're now within 5-6 months of release, with discs going gold some time before that, so expecting a miracle at this point in terms of optimizations is foolish.

im shocked how terrible the demo is. grafics are meh (no AA?) and still it doesnt run fluid. Fighting system is soooo bad. If this is any indication of how the full game will be, then this will be a huge disappointment. Again! maybe its time to be honest and admit that the FF franchise is dead. it died a long time ago.

Are you comparing, like, endgame KH gameplay to this?

Yeah which part of KH are people comparing? Early game, mid game, late game (lol if so)? And which one? KH2 for example is quite different from BBS.

Saying it's a poor man's KH means nothing by itself.

This was an alright demo I guess, took me about 30 minutes to beat it. I didn't play or get Duscae so this was my first time playing FFXV and getting a feel for it.

Combat seems simple and a bit fluid but not very in-depth (but then again it is only a 30 minute demo so...), reminded me somewhat of the combat in Kingdom Hearts (like most people say), and even a little bit of Nier too.

Also I haven't seen many people talking about it directly, but I love the rain in this game. So nice.

Music/Soundtrack seems good as well, which doesn't shock me since even the FF13 series had great music.

Edit: Also will echo what some people are saying and that is a few things seemed off with the performance/graphics of the game

Graphics are terrible. IQ is incredibly bad. Blurry, bad AA solution and low framerate. Its harder on the eyes than FFXIII was imo (which ran really solid, one of the few good things about that game).

Finished the demo and tried to fight with the giant multiple times.

My opinions (PS4 version):

*Compared to Duscae there seems to be a resolution increase or they're using some AA with less blurring.
In Duscae the image looked noticeably blurred and it bothered me a lot since it was hiding a lot of the details. Here there are still a few aliasing problems but the annoying blur has gone away. I can tell pretty clearly because as I said it annoyed me a lot before.

*Frame rate is not good, lots of drops from 30fps, but it's still better than what was in Duscae, that coupled with the sharper image and the fact they have added magic and more special effects this time makes me reasonably happy and hopeful for the final version.

*Lighting system and materials shaders are top notch.

*Camera and target system have been considerably improved. In Duscae targeting in particular was a mess, now you easily lock/unlock target with R3 and scroll through the enemies with the right stick, like KH.

*Fighting system is closer to Kingdom Hearts than before. The fact that you can now switch manually between weapons is totally welcome and also it gives sense to the multiple weapons (sword to do aerials, long sword to recoup MP and hit harder when defense is broken). In Duscae the system was really confusing.
Magic system is also nicely implemented, I liked the fact that it has an influence not just on the enemy but also on the main character himself.

*Negative things about the demo. There's something off about the buffering of the commands during the fights, it feels a bit slow and unresponsive, especially while you're trying to dodge. It takes time to get used to it.
The demo does at terrible job at explaining the combat system, most people won't even realize what they can do, especially those who have not played Duscae.
The fact that you can keep Noctis in the air using the left stick to do aerials should have been clear, also they're not explaining that warps to distant structures is useful to recoup MPs quickly. Basically they're assuming that everyone has played Duscae before and this is not a good assumption for a demo released to the general public.

Overall I liked the demo, it was a fun way to show the improvements over Duscae and the beautiful lighting and weather system.
But it's clear that this is not part of the game and doesn't represent the experience of the full game which is a full open world adventure. So I'm not sure what a few people were expecting here. I feel that most of the disappointed people didn't play Duscae before and are not treating this for what it is.

That's odd then because a lot of these screens and even Squeenix's official captures just don't look 1080p. The image quality is abhorrent, just jaggy and smeary, the sign of an upscale.

I thought it was sub 1080p before I read this thread
the jaggies are everywhere and the IQ is very bad for a native 1080p

I hate they force the camera to be so close. I love Kingdom Hearts gameplay but this demo made me dizzy while jumping around.

What? Outside of shadows the graphics are pretty good, the IQ is actually pretty damn clean outside of the shitty hair aliasing, and I still don't know where all the frame rate complaining is coming from, I only had two short drops in my hour playing.

I feel like I played a very different demo from you, the only noticeable aliasing I saw as on hair.

I have had a bunch of friends text me this morning that they are excited to try this FFXV demo since they didn't get to play Duscae.

I have tried my hardest to make sure they understand this is a tech demo and not a slice of the game.

this is going to cause an issue with new players for sure.

Square fucked up calling it the "Platinum Demo" shoulda been the "Playable Tech Demo".

Here's a few videos ive been experiment and mixing things up, it's fun as hell . I feel with different sets of weapons, magic and group combos this game can be great. Thing is it does a poor job explaining how to do things.

I just realized those air short warps consume magic so I entered statis luckily I had fire equipped (first vid) haven't messed around with armiger yet, that's up next.

I really don't understand most of the complains

The graphics are great, I don't get any performance issue during the demo and the Battle system got WAY better with the weapon changes

The framerate wasn't all that bad for me, it looked worse on the stream for sure. But the drops that I've seen seem to be standard fare for a lot of open world games which is probably why I guess I'm not all "omg HORRIBLE framerate". Of course, I would love it if they had a rock solid framerate, and if PS4K is legitimately announced and releasing shortly after FFXV (and FFXV is going to be one of the games that will perform better on it) I may just wait a bit longer to play this game for a better experience.

Wow, awesome vids. Thanks for sharing.

How are you performing those aerial dodges? I never figured it out on my playthrough so was left doing ground combos most of the time.

All the above is pretty bad on the X-Box. I'm not interested in getting into a console fight, but the Duscae demo looked fine on the PS4. Maybe the platform has some differences? The demo I just played was muddied as heck. I don't really care too much about stuff like that, but it was definitely noticeable.

Drops aren't the problem. The framepacing and input lag is. It makes the game feel like sub 30 all the time. Apparently the X1 version is even worse.

How anyone can not feel that is beyond me.

I wish more people here realized this lol

This is how I felt. It was a nice little demo and that's it. It isn't representative of the final game. The response here though has been far more negative than anywhere else I have found.

wtf I'm watching videos and there's really not that bad of hitching at all...i'll be playing it tonight but man, you guys sure blow a stink over some really minute stuff. Visuals are great too. Really surprised.

This game is going to be something special. Wow.

The music elevates it to another level but the whole thing has a very "magical" feel to it which I'm sure is what they were trying to recapture

Performance isn't consistent but not that big of a deal, especially since it's not about precise inputs or whatever

Wow, awesome vids. Thanks for sharing.

You have to direct Noctis in the air using the left stick.

As I said most people won't even realize what they can do because well.....it's not explained :D

I expected much worse reading impressions on here but it was not so bad. Ps4 version.

Framerate: there are definitely drops, especially during the last battle, but nothing unbearable or 10 fps.

Graphics are really good, graphical quality is not the best ever, but i think this is expected since FF XV is basically open world, it must be difficult to find a compromise between IQ and framerate. Lighting is truly awesome, yet i read people call it a ps3 game.

Combat: i had KH vibes during the whole demo while fighting in that house, it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland part where you fight Heartless. Music also is distinctly Kingdom Hearts. Considering i love Kingdom Hearts it's great. I find it to be simplistic but to me it's because it being a demo. They basically teach you how to attack and defend, nothing more.

The real issue was this kind of input delay that is not good in a game that relies on fast paced combat. Evading was too difficult, mostly because of this input lag. Controls felt a bit sluggish.

All things considered a nice little demo that doesn't disappoint me, but it neither excites me. We will see with the final game. Not a day one purchase for me, but will buy it no doubt.

When you jump and press the analog the stick plus the attack button in any direction you are free to control Noctis back and forth and sideways as you please. If you successfully dodge and you can keep attacking and won't hit the floor, just be mindful of your MP. I don't hold the attack button btw I feel in total control.

Reading these posts and playing for yourself you'd think its an entirely different experience. Jus play for yourself

I never played the first demo so I was looking forward to this one. Just tried it during my lunch break. Very underwhelmed. Visuals were nothing special (and I was expecting something special), camera had plenty of issues (like with jumping), technical issues with framerate were really noticeable, Carbuncle was kind of annoying, there wasn't much to do, combat was simplisitic...

Eh, not sure how this is supposed to sell the game to anyone.

I think that guy doesn't know what he's doing. This is the screenshot he's using.

I'm no pixel counter and yet simply by looking at the jaggies around Noctis I can tell it's not 1080p.

The shitty imgur compression doesn't help with that shot. Jaggies is due to their AA solution.

Anyway, graphics in Altissia doesn't look as impressive especially with missing SSR and such.

Could someone tell me where the two optional weapons in the Iron Giant area are? I've tried my best but I just can't find 'em!

Dude these are awesome. The air game here is so much better than in Duscae.

The problem is the following from I see people perhaps playing the combat and defense portion wrong.

For instance, when you're fighting the giant you are not meant to hold the guard button all the time, you only use it for those big swings attacks and use roll for the unguardable attacks ( the punch on the floor attack). When it comes to combat you have the air mobility at your disposal and when you are on the ground you can cancel an attack animation into roll.

Warp up and drop to the middle

Where did u get the other weapons? Guess I didn't look

Shining sword is in the big room behind the books near the table.

Hammer is in the city part right after

The two adult Noctis weapons are hidden in the tower, you need to use warp and drop on a balcony to get them.

Indeed, I think the kid Noctis gameplay does a very poor job of getting people ready for adult gameplay too.

The thing is, who's fault is that? They should have included more of what people can expect in the demo. I really like action games and felt the combat was floaty and lacking any real moves. I mean, someone can basically button mash their way through until the giant at the end and then it just expects you to know what you're doing.

While I agree that it's the final game that should really matter, this demo really doesn't do a good job of providing people with a good indication of what the game is really going to be like. Some text at the end just doesn't really cut it.
