Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

Please tell me I wasn't the only one who warped all the way up the building and just stayed there looking at the view? Pretty awesome to finally recreate the moment seen from previous trailers!

How do you warp and is it in battle only?

Edit: Thanks for the answers

Pretty good demo I was left wanting more since I haven't played the other demo and was hoping for something along the same lines. Pretty good nonetheless.

WOW

I actually really liked that! Didn't think the IQ was that bad either. The framerate got bad at times, but it as mostly decent as well.

Really pleased with the demo, the negativity certainly made me expect much worse.

I reeeaaaaally like the new combat, seems like they streamlined the skills we used in Duscae with a button to command movements to each weapon? A compromise, but understandable, given the need of the d-pad for real time weapon changing. It's definitely a favorable trade, not having universal individual skills but having complete control over our weapons.

My biggest criticism is that it doesn't let you save your game when you can fight as adult Noctis, that's the most important part of the demo. While I did enjoy my time through the kid Noctis sections (NERF SHINING HAMMER!), I really don't wanna do it again at all.

EDIT: I wonder how many people also named Carbuncle as Stella, lol.

I've uploaded a commentary free play through for anyone that doesn't have access to the demo or just fancies checking it out over playing it.

Thoughts:

The truck/giraffe transformations seemed to be part of the Tech Demo aspect of this. That and the panels that changed the time of day and weather. I agree with you on the music and the feeling wonder and enchantment - Yoko Shimomura (composer of the Kingdom Hearts games) does the music for FFXV and it's just fantastic.

I cleared it. It was fun. The miniature part was hilarious. I was having trouble with the boss until I figured out that you are supposed to meet his big sword with your own big sword.

Carbuncle is super cute, but it was late when I started the demo, so I only got to the toy room (and spent most of the time exploring, trying to find those green crystals). I felt like I was playing Crash Bandicoot or Banjo Kazooie or something.

What is the point of warping to the side of buildings in the battle at the end? I know it looks cool but does it serve any purpose?

You can use the warp spots to quickly get out of a sticky situation or quickly regain mp and hp. You can also do a warp strike, and the higher up you are(or farther away?), it does more damage and can stun the dude. Did you fight the boss again or just go t the ending afterward?

Yeah, I agree with you in regards to the manual dodge. As it is, you don't cover enough distance with manual dodge to be able to dodge attacks with a huge range effectively and no i-frames just makes it even worse. On the other hand, the delay with auto dodging makes combat feel unresponsive as hell. I felt like I had to press dodge before the attack animation from the giant started in order to activate it in time, which was not fun at all.

On a technical level I was mostly fine with the demo but since combat is the most important aspect for me, I am really not convinced right now. Star Ocean 5 combat looks much moe fun than this at the moment.

I definitely agree that combat feels off. It's really bugging me too since I actually like the combat system and think it could be pretty good in the main game with some more skills and equipment unlocked. I just also feel like I'm fighting against the system half the time too due to the slow response, random omissions like armiger activation in midair and as others have been mentioning the mapping of controls you often hold to the face buttons. Like just swapping armiger cycle controls with attack/defend would make camera control so much easier.

What's bothering me about it is I like the system and can see some potential in there, but it feels like it's not going to be realized since any time you get something good going, something gets in your way to screw you over and it all feels like stuff they should be able to fix rather easily.

That gif is a parry, when the option comes up to block thats when it activates

You may also need the greatsword equipped since I tried to activate it repeatedly earlier but it wouldn't happen. I never had the greatsword out though, so worth a shot when trying it.

Ran and controlled horribly. I can't imagine someone going in blind to that demo, completing it and wanting to go and preorder. I laughed out loud when the prompt to preorder popped up at the end.

It looks like crap. Downloaded it, hated it. Deleted already. Horrible controls, framerate was bad, jaggies everywhere, blurred textures all over the place and so on.

I really wish they let you run through a few trash mobs instead of just the big mother. The performance wasn't great but it's a while out so benefit and all. Can't stand the button mapping at all. The combat is slow in a way I don't think it's meant to be which is probably down to the iffy performance.

It works with the smaller sword too I've done it a couple times.

It's funny. This demo was supposed to be the culmination of an otherwise great event, used to enhance the already established hype. What it's doing is the exact reverse, it's literally draining the hype away.

Also, is there much of a point to the yellow crystals you get other than unlocking tech demo tiles?

You need those tiles to get certain weapons. I know the shield is locked behind the silver plate one and meteorain(which looks awesome) is locked behind a gold one.

Depends on who you are. I played about 3~4 hours of it, and I loved it. Hyped for September.

Wow that was... a bad demo. What Square should do is remove this demo and release Duscae to all. Its much better and far more representative of the final game.

You can also parry him, you can warp strike from far for big damage.
Its pretty easy to avoid him by keeping guard press, but the time to dodge roll is't clear at all, at least to me, and it doesn't seem like there is any kind of reward for doing it as oposed to just holding the button down.
Same as holding the attack button vs multiple presses. I feel like there should be some timing mini game in there that could reward you with critical hits or stunning the enemy. I still like it though.

That demo killed my excitement for the game stone dead. Hopefully things get refined towards the end because that combat was not fun.

I like it too, but I don't think there's any question, at least on Gaf (which is often the tail that wags the dog), that the demo has stepped on the very positive response to the event.

Auto Dodge I think uses MP while rolling does not

Hoping the air-combo stuff gets better when the game comes out. I attribute my issues with it to the fact there are so little options in the demo. As Adult Noctis I basically had a light and heavy sword and not much to transition to in the air. The hits also lacked the weight and impact like say Kingdom Hearts for example. Hoping that gets rectified in the final release or it's just an issue of giving demo players the bare minimum weapon-wise.

Get the shinruken weapon that way you can stay in the air because the greatsword doesn't provide warp abilities so you gotta be quick switching weapons on the fly.

Yea luckily tho a couple of sites seem to have enjoyed it from what i read(eurogamer, gamespot) and a couple comments sections from other places seem positive. The massive it sucks thing really does seem to be just here for now at least

It doesnt play the same animation though. Every weapon has its own unique counter/parry animation.
O yea i know

I HHHHHHHHAAAATTTTEEEEEEEEE The combat controls in this game.

My right thumb is doing WAY too much in my opinion.

Use my right thumb, to move the camera, use it to block, use it to warp and use it to attack..........

I was getting SUPER frustrated with the controls. Not to mention, you gotta HOLD the buttons, making switching between blocking, attack and warping slower than usual and I was getting hit more than I liked.

I was not happy at all with these combat controls.

why can't I change the controls to attack be Right trigger and defend using left trigger and warp using one of the shoulder buttons??? My index finger was doing absolutely NOTHING the entire battle. Why not make use of those button for combat??? Why put all the characters action besides movement on one finger!?

I was excited about the game but if the controls are gonna be like that, ima have to pass on this game.

You can just tap attack or tap defend like in a normal character action game. Shoulder buttons should have more use though.

Yeah, there are a decent amount of people who seem displeased with it, but there are a decent amount of people who enjoyed it. It wasn't a very good demo to show off right now, admittedly because it doesn't give a very good impression of the final game, but I, and many others, still enjoyed what we got out of it.

I don't know how SE managed to go from the near-perfect movement and combat of KH2FM to this clunky mess.

After suffering through that, my first reaction is to go remove XV from my Amazon wishlist.

I'll still buy it but every demo gets me less hyped :( Not a fan of the combat at all and man is that IQ bad. Hopefully I will enjoy the final game as much as I have previous ones.

I'm in the same boat. Dreadful, boring, uninspired battle system.

I just spend an hour and 30 minutes inside the demo. It was pretty exciting! Here are my thoughts:
  • Graphics: Apart from the first area, it looks pretty amazing, especially in sunny weather, at night or in the evening.
  • Framerate: Was good actually!
  • English voice acting is still bad. Guess I'll go with Japanese VA in the game.
  • Controls (button mapping): I could get used to them. They're not great (shoulder buttons should be used more, especially for things like sprinting, warping and I'd love a magic modifier like in Kingdom Hearts 2).
  • Controls (responsiveness): this game is NOT responsive, and that's very bad. Remember how CD Projekt Red added an option to make Geralt turn faster? SQEX should copy that for most actions in this game. Kingdom Hearts 2's battle system is so fun because it's fast and responsive. This game chooses to let animations finish before starting to react to a button press (e.g. Noctis is done rolling but getting up? Nope, you can't roll a second time. Magic throwing system is very imprecise too.), choosing realism over fun, and I hate that. Pretty sure plenty of people do.
  • Combat system: Cool, but a quite clunky considering how easily Noctis is knocked out/away or falls over. The magic is great, though the throwing controls are very imprecise and I wish they would just automatically throw it at the targeted enemy (maybe it does when you just press it? I didn't test it enough I guess).
  • Artistic design: It's amazing. Altissia especially, I took like 10 screenshots/videos in that place. Even though it's a ghost town it's really beautiful already. It's very detailed, too (and I can imagine Luna's room will be very detailed too when viewed in its normal size). I loved the fog over the lower part of the city in the distance the most. However, the "rainy weather" effect is quite overdone. It makes everything look foggy and blurry, which is not how rainy weather normally looks - at least not where I live.
  • Music: It's good (Altissia's music is great, and of course Omnis Lacrima, but I found the rest unmemorable), but it shouldn't play all the time. Shimomura's music is always upbeat (unless it's for a sad scene). It's her style and I respect that, but I much prefer slow and peaceful tracks when nothing is going on. That's Uematsu's style, and FF14 also had slow tracks most of the time. I hope Tabata sticks with his decision to have periods of silence like FF14.
  • Carbuncle: Adorable, but I disliked that he had only one or two voice sounds for all of his dialogue. It looks like we can name the summons in FFXV! Great. I like being able to name things, even though I always choose the default name.
  • Whether it was a good idea to release this: No, I don't think so. It's really weird as a demo. I know it's just a tech demo, but I think that on services like PSN and Xbox Live, many people expect to only see demos representative of the game in all aspects. This one isn't and if people end up thinking FFXV is like this, it won't be good for the sales. I mean - it doesn't feel very professional to release a tech demo to get people to buy the game (which is pretty much what they did considering the "Order FFXV" button in the main menu and after the demo).
All in all I think the final game will be good. I wish they had ditched the realism in the controls and combat system to go for a more tightly-controlled and fun system that does not include falling over all the time, like KH2. There's no chance they will correct that before release though. Oh well. Still getting the game! (I would pre-order the collector's edition but Amano's artwork looks really bland this time, even though I loved his older artwork)
(Secretly hoping Nomura will make the right choice and have something like KH2's perfectly tight control scheme and battle system in FFVIIr)

Dodge roll doesn't spend MP, while regular guarding does.

You can also use it to get away from unblockable attacks.

Yeah the music was so good and I'm very tempted to pre-order the OST based on what I've heard so far and of course Shimomura's track record.

The demo at least did what it was really meant to do and did a good job showing the time of day and weather.

You're not wrong, but at the same time that's not what newcomers to the series probably care about. From a marketing standpoint I think this was a mistake. Duscae should have been the free demo, and Platinum should have been a preorder bonus.

Really awkward way to demo the game for the general public. Type-Zero demo was lots better, this felt like a interactive trailer. Like, does collecting the Final Fantasy Jiggies actually do anything, or is that just there?

You need them to unlock certain nodes and move on.....other than that no. I don't think you can get shuriken without them though
