Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

Lol, yea ty! Feels weird being back after almost two months was it? But it was missed! I was laying low in the Uncovered Event but I was in there getting hyped.

I enjoyed the demo, but I can't help but agree that, for the general audience, they should have gone with Duscae 2.0. Duscae is poorly paced, but at least it gives a better sense of what the game is about. Don't understand the really harsh negative reactions. I guess most of them are people who never tried Duscae.

Yeah the event was awesome!

But yeah people are acting like they paid $60 for this demo.. when it was totally free. I do get that adding on to Duscae 2.0 would have been best but I mean in 6 months we will get the actual game and I am confident it will be the game we have all been waiting for.

Question...

I haven't played this game since the first demo so I gotta ask, how much better have the demos become? I'm actually thinking about holding off on previews, demos, everything until the game releases.

If you don't go in with the right mindset it's better to hold off at this point.

that'd probably be the best option if you don't wanna have a bad taste before the game. The biggest issues imo is performance, which can really hamper your enjoyment depending on how tolerant you are of it

They really need to update the demo to extend adult Noctis combat outside plaza battle and explain combat mechanic clearer. Lots of mechanic hidden in final battle that I still don't know how it works like air dodge. And goddamn SE, fix the delay button, this is action-RPG now.

Weird there's no weapon abilities like in Duscae.

Where the hell is the shield and shuriken? I can't find shit ;-;

They are above the main balcony of the palace. The first warp point you see in the building's front? You need to warp above it and drop down into it.

Dope thanks, I'll just go in blind then. Did the same thing with IX and many others so won't be too bad.

I'm very much looking forward to XV and this isn't going to change that, but man does the combat still feel clunky. I don't like it at all.

Yes, also I don't think you can get the Shuriken until you beat the boss once (you have the option of respawning him by stepping on a panel)?

The shurikan needs 250 crystals, the shield requires you to have beat the boss already and start it agian

Interesting demo so far; more playful than I was expecting given all the heavy trailers I'd seen before. The Kingdom Hearts feel is obviously there.

I just made it outside after the Toy Story segment.

The visuals are concerning. Very choppy frame rate (PS4), and image quality around people's hair particularly is also rough.

Actual question: any insight on how likely they are to polish away those issues by release time?

(Precedent would indicate that a less-than-beautiful main offline numbered FF is nearly impossible... but it's has been a long time since the last one.)

Didn't play Duscae. I thought this demo was okay up to the boss. Not terribly interesting.

Boss was hard since it doesn't make an effort to explain the mechanics beyond "attack with O, dodge with square" and all the prior enemies were extremely simple to fight. Still fun though once you start getting the hang of it. I struggled a ton against the level 15 boss the first time, but did a lot better a second time around.

Apparently I missed some stuff though, since I just fought with the weapons you start with. And I still don't really get how health works. At first it seemed like Resonance of Fate's scratch damage, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Also hope the inevitable PC port is good so I don't have to worry about IQ or performance.

Wow, so much negativity in this thread.

Let me say in advance that I was EXTREMELY disappointed by Duscae, both 1 and 2.0. The game wasn't fun, combat was confusing, the controls were awful and it just was not a good experience.

Framerate inconsistencies aside, I am extremely impressed by this demo. The controls are much better, combat is easier to understand and much more fun, and it is by far one of the best, if not the best looking console games I've ever seen.

And the carbuncle is absolutely adorable.

Bring on September.

Well, I am definitely puzzled by your statement on the visuals. On the PS4 it looks rather rough to me. Definitely nowhere near best-looking console game, my god.

Good thing is that the visual blahness is all technical, so I am hopeful it'll get fixed before release.

I'm so confused how you can be positive about this demo. It was pretty awful. And what is with this crap of, "the combat was fun!", you hold circle. Like literally hold circle. I'm so confused.

The hair was nice and I am excited for Kingdom Hearts now, but this has me worried. This is by far the worse thing I've played on my PS4 thus far.

Maybe they should of just put this as a "technical demo" of the sorts. Either way, do we know if they changed the ENG voice cast in any way? Sounds like it still have the original Noct voice from this demo.

Well, people are positive about the demo because it was pretty good.

I played a bit of it and was blown away immediately. I love the art direction in this game, it just looks great. Combat seems fun and fluid, animations and everything are superb.

Read a few comments and theres a surprising amount of negativity. I just dont agree at all.

If this was your main complaint regarding the combat, then you obviously haven't played Episode Duscae.

They have no idea what the fuck they're doing. This is the last thing any competent developer would release to represent their infamous, decade in the making show piece.

So I finally got a chance to put some time in with the demo....and I actually kinda liked it!

Combat still isn't great, but the music was fantastic, and the scenery was pretty. Once I respawned the giant a handful of times and experimented, I think I can see how the game can open up a bit. I actually liked single person combat a lot more than the group stuff in Duscae.

Still can't help but wish the battle system was more Tales-ish instead of just holding circle, and it baffles me that you're supposed to move your character around and be able to hit the D-pad to switch weapons mid combo. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually, it's just an odd choice. The magic system was also pretty bad, specifically the aiming. I'd much rather just have the option to auto lock to a target and it just shoots the magic to where the target was when I press the button. The manual aiming sucks.

Otherwise though, it's serviceable. I'm not sure I'm going to love 50 hours of that combat, but we'll see how it shapes up. I was satisfied enough with the demo to warrant a purchase at least.

Thanks for this.
That's what I thought would happen. Yeah, the dodge should have interrupted the swords animation but it seems like they made it so animations in process have priority over newly imputed commands. They really should think about changing that.

Yeah noticed this yesterday. I also really wish there was an aerial dodge in mid-air. Both pretty big problems really. Could get used to the combat, but the defensive and evasive part of it? I haven't been able to beat the boss without pretty much being killed yet.

I havent, cause it was on the disc of another game. This was the demo they released, but it was a fake version? Why release this?

I'll play through it again tho, cause I am truly baffled how people enjoyed this. Maybe I missed something.

Well, imagine you're going into this cold -- you've never heard of FF or seen anything about this game. You merely heard a promising action JRPG is coming out, and you try this demo to see if you should buy the game.

Does this demo still blow you away?

If so, I don't understand what you value in games. How could it possibly blow you away "immediately"? I find that a strange reaction. Animations are superb? Really?

---

In context, the demo was fine. I mean, the FF 12 demo that came with DQ didn't seem like anything special, but it was informative, and the actual game was mechanically and visually superb.

So I'm not down on XV... but blown away? Come on now.

---

Normally I'd wonder why release something so iffy, as it could turn away potential buyers. However, this is FF. If it comes out to great reviews, this demo won't make any difference w.r.t. sales.

The boss had more interaction than "hold circle," but yeah, other enemies didn't even feel like they served a purpose since they were so non-threatening. Even to someone who didn't know how to play beyond "hold circle/dpad to change weapon."

It did feel like a more technical demo than anything else. The boss was fun though.

Just finished the demo - about 15min total

I'm sort of confused as to who this demo was meant for. At the very least it didn't really feel like it was meant for me, the casual observer who only just learned recently that XV was so close to release

I mean, was this suppose to feel like a tech demo? Complete with little in-game dev tools? I'm not so sure if that feeling was intended or not, especially because all things considered the tech they were showing off was actually pretty poor from a performance and texture standpoint

The combat was so odd. Like, for 90% of it you're just holding a button at blue things and I guess that's combat? The iron giant felt great and I thought the game was telling me that the real demo was about to start. Then the whole thing ended

Odd experience overall, and definitely an odd series of choices for a 'demo'. I'm way more confused and conflicted than I was 15min ago, and I barely knew anything about this game

Guess what?

The Golem's abs jiggle.

Like DOA boobies. They have even less weight than that, actually.

Too lazy to gif/webm.

Shit's unreal. Those don't work like that, Square.

Actually yes, this was supposed to be just a little tech demo. Why they decided this was going to be the first exposure of the game to the majority of the public, we'll never know. It was a bad idea though.

But even as a technical demo it failed, as a game environment artist the environments did nothing for me and they did a lot of old amatuer tricks. The lighting engine they are using is pretty nice at times, but they don't use it well and overly rely on their reflectance. And the framerate was horrible so that kind of makes it all pointless anyways.

Some of the effects were nice and character models were solid. But I dunno, still feel like I took crazy pills.

If ever there was a perfect demonstration of what I just posted on the previous page, this post is it.

Out of context, this demo is just a weird anti-sales tool.

However, as a way to communicate some things to those watching FF XV's every development for years, it was OK.

In the end, this will come out to either bad reviews or good reviews or great reviews. So this demo won't matter sales-wise.

It's just a bad demo. Especially for new people. They aren't getting the full combat experience that you get to play in 2.0. We should of get like a 3.0 version of Duscae with a more evolved combat, group, and the small additions with magic. Ah well. It is what it is. It's hard to sell someone on the game with this new demo though. It's got pretty effects, weather and all that and a smidge of basic combat.
