Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

For the casual Joe first exposure to the game this was a bad idea. But for me I've put hours into the combat seeing how things work and whatnot, so I'm satisfied and the sheer curiousity of just looking around.

I havent, cause it was on the disc of another game. This was the demo they released, but it was a fake version? Why release this?

I'll play through it again tho, cause I am truly baffled how people enjoyed this. Maybe I missed something.
The demo doesn't really give the combat any moment to shine. It was clear that they have released a tech demo (and they have stated as much), so the combat wasn't the top priority here. The only actual combat is in the end fight and even that is limited to the Iron Giant. Kid Noctis was essentially press O to attack but that won't be in the final game.

Duscae was much more enjoyable because of its variety of enemies and the inclusion of party members. If you strip more than half of the core combat system, which relies on party members, you get a half assed combat.

This demo kind of killed a lot of my excitement for the game after the marketing blowout from the event. The amazing cover by Florence, the great trailers and all the extras mostly all thrown out of the window when I finished this demo. It left a bad taste in my mouth to say the least.

I will try it again later when my mind is clear and maybe after I've watched some videos on how the combat really works, but the first time I played it I simply didn't like what I was looking at. The beginning felt claustrophobic and brought back FFXIII to mind-- specifically, it brought me back to the time I tried the FFXIII demo where I had lost some interest in the game. When the carbuncle prompted me to find a large corridor I was ready to leave.
As many have already pointed out, the framerate, jaggies and lack of aa definitely felt like a distraction. I couldn't help but notice the ugly, Resident Evil 4-esque blown-up textures on the books you get to climb and things like the weird geometry of the waterfalls in the setting that follows. The inclusion of the weird collectibles instantly reminded me of Bubsy 3D which makes fun of this entire thing.

And of course there's the demo's combat where, after long sessions of Bloodborne and Smash4, it felt completely dull, unresponsive and even complicated. Episode Duscae felt rough around the edges, but I was HOOKED by the possibilities of the final game. It had a feel and visual flare that felt completely absent from this latest demo. I played Duscae for hours and couldn't relate to the people that hated it. This demo though is just a complete different story.

tl;dr: weird demo, can't believe it's gotten me worried after all my optimism for this game. Will give it another chance for sure. I still feel the lighting in this game is just incredible and no game that I know of can match it. Still love the pitch-black darkness of the night and how things light up in that setting.

edit:

Beautiful. This is what I love about XV. I just hope that the remaining months of polishing can fix the smaller visual hiccups that distract from the great art direction and lighting.

Just switched circle with square through the accessibility options and the demo now feels so much better to me. Why the hell did they remap it in the first place? Circle for attacks is something my mind can't process.

I really hope they provide this option in the final game. Is there a Twitter account or a place to leave feedback?

I NEED to try this! Might as well try to remap everything so that it resembles Bloodborne for me.

Because in Japanese games & culture the Circle symbol means confirmation/yes, with X for cancel/no. Maybe it's a holdover from that? Circle to confirm action to "do something", in this case Attack.

Being a fan of something doesn't mean you need to reward poor or mediocre products. Not saying this is going to be one, but the demo sure is underwhelming and the last several mainline games have been, so it's not surprising that people are skeptical.

If FF bombs it's not going to kill JRPGs, it's just going to kill gigantic budgeted ones that under-deliver.

Makes the common comparison of Persona - be it 5 specifically or the series in general - all the more relevant.

Persona is selling more while the games are still cheap enough to not be in the AAA range. Meanwhile just spending more money isn't doing FFXV any favors. An open-world game, an anime, a movie with vey well-respected, genuine talent attached to it. Even a nice, fun event to announce it all.

But the demo is underwhelming at best. That's what people will remember when deciding whether to buy the game or not.

This is one of the worst demos ever.

I played Duscae and Yes i know there are more mechanics to it and yes this doesn't represent the final game. I know its not even a demo.

But i'm not the point. This is unleashed on the public, consumers who need to get hyped for it and pre order. For a game with such assumed projections, this is a bizarre move.

The framerate worried me. Its a small area and there is one character. The full game offers a bigger scope.

I personally enjoyed my hour with it but as the first demo shown off to the general public at large (with no game buy-in to access), I definitely agree that it fell way flat. I wonder if that'll prompt SE to release Duscae publicly for people to have a better sense of the moment to moment gameplay. I can't see them spending the resources to create yet another demo given that we're only 5 months out and their time seems better spent ironing out the technical issues.

What's the most crystals people have found? I made it to 385 and 6 gifts. Two weapon upgrades and 4 spells.

That seems about right from what I played. I had 365 and the same about of gifts when it was all said and done, but I also lost a few by getting tagged by monsters so I imagine it was around your number had I a totally clean run.

This is supposed to sct more like a tech demo and i cabt but feel disappointed with it...

Its blurry, has framerate and franepacing issues, the textures are mediocre and some elements are just flat out last gen material. Look at the damn waterfalls... yikes!

All in all this seems to have nothing to do with all the footage we have seen, like the environment video that came out 1-2 days ago.

Underwhelming as hell...

haven't actually tried the demo, will do later tonight
does completing all the crystals and weapons, gifts etc actually give you anything special? because if not i'll just clear the demo once then preorder

I've played through the demo on both PS4 and XBO now. Performance and IQ are slightly less bad in the former, as expected. However, I found it very underwhelming in just about every way. The combat is sluggish and mostly uninteresting, the graphics/lighting are mostly unimpressive (looks good during night-time in the rain), but at least the music was nice.

Melee combat against the smaller enemies felt ok when switching between weapons mid-combo, though not so much against the boss. On the other hand, doing warp-attacks against the boss seems like it has the potential to be fun with some tweaking. Magic feels very awkward to use, but maybe that was done on purpose due to how powerful it is. Dodging/rolling doesn't seem very useful the way it is now, and is also awkward to use. Maybe it's just the frame-pacing that needs to be fixed.

I did not get a chance to play the previous demo. Hopefully SE releases a new, and more polished demo before the full game releases.

I don't want to make any quick judgments, but it wouldn't surprise me if FF VII Remake had a better combat system lol (KH3 seems like a definite to me). I'm kind of wondering if the quality of action combat is highly determined by whether Nomura is involved or not...

I mean, Nomura wants to do genuine action combat with skills/abilities taken from FF in addition to new ones fit his games.

Square, as a company, seems to think anything more than a stop-gap between turn-based and action would be bad for FF.

It really is a bizarre move. I actually think this demo is the one that should've come with Type-0, you know just a fun little tech demo for the fans. And then you put Duscae up for everyone to try because Duscae actually shows the game's potential and structure.

Wait was that the same place of the demo?

After the Playroom. They only showed a very very small part of it though. You can't see that bridge part. There's more to it in the Environment video, including an in-game render of that CG shot.

Also the demo had no NPCs, but the trailer had TONS (not necessarily in Altissia). The demo isn't that great of a representation.

Lol, there would have been a shitstorm of magnificent proportions if people bought a full retail title to try this long-awaited game only to end up with a crappy, short tech demo.

These demo impressions are so dissapointing :(

Not what we expected after TEN YEARS of waiting!
they loved to use that line on Uncovered

Demo was legit boring, took maybe 20 minutes and I was ready for it to be over in 10. I'm not using this as any indication of my potential enjoyment of FFXV though, just think it was a really bad way to preview a mainline FF.

I need a Carbuncle in my life. Like, right now.

Could the demo have been better? Sure. But it's a fucking demo, and I'm encouraged it's using KH-esque combat.

This may have been the worst demo I've ever played. I feel like I understand even less about this game now. I... transformed into a yak? And then couldn't fight monsters because I was so slow and they all ran away from me? What the heck was that? Then it just drops you into a "boss" fight, after having explained nothing about the combat? What the heck is that teleportation thing. Why would I want to do that? The broadsword generates MP... but how do I use MP! I had exactly one shot of a fire spell? Was that a spell even?

Also performance was terrible and it had probably the very worst jump model I've ever seen. If you jump while heading down stairs, you star on a parabola but after like three feet of horizontal movement, you just plummet straight down? Movement in general was awkward.

Yeesh. Why'd they even put this thing out? What is the point of this?

It does, the director has a lot to say in how a game turns out.the problem was that Nomura could not get his vision to work thus he was moved to other projects.

Gotta be honest this game is not looking to be much fun. It needs a turbo mode or something.

It needs more options, more enemies, and party interaction.

I maintain they should've just sped KH fundamentals (as in mashing), but I bet it really will be OK if not pretty good after a few hours in the final game.

Did you even pay attention to the screen at all? There's a counter for how many Fire spells you have available. Like, clear as day.

Yea I was pretty shocked at how bad Altissia looked..

some parts of it looked terrible..

Indoor environment was probably the best looking part of the demo.

The water at the bottom is literally flat lol. It can't be close to final.

Does anyone know the Japanese impression of the demo?
