Yeah, people keep saying this and it doesn't make sense either because you're not looking at in the sense of this being a successor. The PS4 was more powerful than the PS3; it didn't change its performance, it caused devs to stop making games for it and the games that continued being made for it either ran poorly or were extremely limited compared to the other versions.
If people really care about graphics like that then buy a PC, you'll probably save money in the long run.
But I'm still assuming that this is mainly for VR and everything else is a supplement.

games looks better at the end of last gen, sure, but many of them are also subHD and below 30fps most of the time.
even technical wizard like Naughty Dog's The Last of Us didn't perform as good as Uncharted 2.
end of last gen is when I start to invest upgrading my desktop to be decent gaming pc because PS3 games performance start to bother me too much. I'd be glad if I had the option for mid gen update for PS4 so I'm not having another of those sub HD resolution and below 25fps average

You're expecting a 50% discount on two brand new pieces of hardware just because you own an old PS4? That's straight up impossible to happen.
That doesn't mean those people can't have an option that is better for them. I'm not even one of those complainers, I find that whining to be so over the top about such minor crap, but I would definitely upgrade a PS4 to get better visuals/performance.

Games at the end of last gen had lots of compromises in resolution and framerate. This is to specifically avoid situations like the end of last gen. The space between the release of the PS4 and this is almost as much as the original Xbox and the 360 and isn't nearly as much of a jump in power. I think it's a reasonable timeframe, especially if the original PS4 is properly supported afterward.

If we keep transitional generation transition but add a high performance hardware option, I wound't complaint that much.
But I fear this will lead the industry into PC/iOS model and I don't want console to follow that.

I honestly think that is the part where Sony could cause the most damage to their seemingly admirable reputation. The pros listed are fine as long as the PS4 continues to receive support which is very likely mostly due to the immense fanbase. 4K VR games or even an indie exclusive game here and there imo wouldn't necessarily be as bad for the obvious reasons, but if something like Uncharted 5 or Bloodborne 2 goes PS4K exclusive, I am predicting riots from Sony fans.
My primary concern is some gamers prefer like console gaming because of simplicity and knowing that the game they are purchasing will work on their console of choice for several years without having to add peripherals or upgrades to keep it relevant or fully functional. A PC/ios/android upgrade model for console gaming imo could be very detrimental for the industry when you know your investment could be rendered obsolete within a couple of years. Of course other companies would follow this trend if they see one company succeed with it. Two models can coexist if they implement this strategy properly. Admittedly, I might even consider a PS4K if it is legitimate depending on the situation. I definitely think making exclusive "high profile" games for it is a vast mistake that will cause an outrage amongst gamers imho.

VR games are the only area where I think Sony would allow a 4k exclusive. Maybe an indie title if it was really pushing tech but they'll absolutely make sure all of their first party games work on the PS4 for the next several years.
I mean it could go that way but it could just as easily do the concept but with longer durations. Nothing at this time shows that Sony wants to start annual updates.
I don't think AAA like Bloodborne 2 or U5 will be PS4K exclusive, that is probably going to be the biggest fuck up than X1 announcement. But I expect a half ass performance on OG PS4 especially from Ubisoft which is why I'm upset with this idea.
3-4 years is a good timeframe for updates like this. I really hope that if it's continued in the future, that's the standard.

It's no that much about annual update, thou I hate that too, it's the infinite cross gen of PC/iOS model that I fear the most.
I stopped buying Ubisoft games after AC3, maybe you should too.

All the speculation by the smartest analysts in the world won't give us any more valid arguments than yours or mine.
2x power and higher price point are the only leaks we've really heard. My objective view that this is just a 'slim' type release like they do with every console they've made thus far, in the year that a slim version would normally come in a PlayStation console life cycle, and that isn't so far fetched now is it?
I think they are just changing the formula a bit, so the 'new model' has a bit more kick to it rather than just a bigger hard drive/smaller form factor. And will be priced accordingly while the original model gets a price drop instead.
All this while maintaining the player base as a whole by allowing the same games to be played throughout the generation, this is also much more inline with what the leaks have told us this far from my view, at least more so than most of the 'Sony screwed us all' posts that have ravaged the thread.
So once again, people need to chill, and any one telling me I need to 'prove myself right' should honestly take their own advice.

But...What if PS5 is further away than we think. Nearer 2021/22 than 2019/20? Also, are you suggesting that when PS5 hits they drop support for PS4 completely? If not then a level of forward compatibility is implied - unless PS5 is a radical departure in hardware architecture then it'd be the usual cross-gen porting scenario.
Looking at PC, IOS and Android development where hardware range remains more diverse Its hard to see how this is going to be a serious problem for most devs to achieve.
As with others, this is the possibility that concerns me. It's the only real issue with the plan. Eventually it has to happen, but timing is everything. In ideal world this wouldn't happen until near or around PS5 lunch, assuming that to is going to be a similar iterative jump in hardware performance rather than a complete new hardware design.
It's a bad message trying to force gamers to switch too quickly, and it's a bad idea to leave a large install base in the cold. In the past they had little choice because the old hardware had its life span stretched for as long as possible come the end it was so tired that continuing support was difficult. Now they have an opportunity, a method, to smooth the cycle so they are not forced into leaving customers behind. It becomes one platform.
Except on PC you have the ability to change the visual settings and resolution to boost framerate, you can't do that on console.
... The games media were pretty clear about the consoles not being cutting edge when they released Listen to Gerstman or go read the Digital Foundry articles...

I know GAF loved the frame rate of Fallout 4 and Just Cause LOL or even the stuttered gameplay of Bloodborne (Admittedly a great game)
The point is the consoles are using architecture very close to PC so the days of eeking out every last bit of power towards the end of the lifespan is just not a reality on the current machines. People hanging their hat on the PS3 producing the best looking games at the end of the lifespan neglected to take into consideration that it was on the cell architecture (something brand new and unexplored) If you legitimately believe there is some hidden power inside the PS4 that is yet to be tapped by developers you are kidding yourself...
I don't recall anyone ever saying that. What i hear is complaining about performance issues which is not a hardware problem but a developer problem that is almost always eventually solved via patch.
And those others who want 60fp, higher res, higher AA ect have always been better served on PC. There's literally no connection with the hardware or the users who have bought over 40 mil of these things and being disappointed.
I'm a PS4 owner and I want 60fps higher AA etc on my PS4... so I will buy the new PS4K if it delivers on those fronts. What the hell is wrong with options?

If Sony went with a PS5 in 2018 rather than this iterative model then your existing console wouldn't be forward supported at all!
This allows them to extend the life of the PS4 to 2021 and have the full 8 year cycle before moving onto brand new hardware with games designed only for it.
