But...What if PS5 is further away than we think. Nearer 2021/22 than 2019/20? Also, are you suggesting that when PS5 hits they drop support for PS4 completely? If not then a level of forward compatibility is implied - unless PS5 is a radical departure in hardware architecture then it'd be the usual cross-gen porting scenario.
Looking at PC, IOS and Android development where hardware range remains more diverse Its hard to see how this is going to be a serious problem for most devs to achieve.
Let me put it this way.
Let's say PS4 is GTX750ti, PS4.5 is GTX 970, PS5 maybe GTX1080.
Right now, we have dev making games base on 750ti. When PS4.5 hit, dev will still make games base on 750ti (force forward compatible) and add bell and whistle to GTX970.
By the time PS5 release, there will be 3 possible scenario
1. Sony cut off force forward compatible of PS4 and PS4.5. PS5 will be a start of new traditional generation. (semi traditional route)
2. Sony cut off force forward compatible of PS4 but keep PS4.5 forward compatible with PS5 (supporting 2 iteration at any time)
3. Sony keep force forward compatible of PS4 and PS4.5. All three hardware will share library. (the PC/iOS route)
If PS4.5 is real, I will only accept scenario 1. Because when PS5 launch, I want dev make game base on GTX1080, not games base on 750ti or 970 with bell and whistle.
Scenario 3 is my worst possible fear.
