Only reason for this is because its a MARVEL superhero movie.

You could get some obscure superhero , and it will still make 500+million just cause 'Marvel'.

But couldn't you make a similar argument for this movie?

"It's a Batman and Superman movie it'll make a billion", and it didn't. I don't think that's fair on Ant-Man, a movie that had great word of mouth.

A character appearing in an SNL sketch decades ago doesn't mean they were super popular. I've seen that sketch and there were lots of characters in it that probably weren't popular in the mainstream at the time.

But whatever. There's never any arguing with you about this stuff, so you can have it.

Hold up, you're tell me Sinbad's Black Lighting didn't put that character on the map?

The thing about Snyder's Ant-Man comment is that while I doubt he intended anything malicious or insulting, that's still how it comes across. That's characteristic of Snyder trying to communicate and failing miserably. The guy has a hell of a tough time making his points in both his movies and his interviews.

Learning he's dyslexic almost made me feel ashamed for poking fun at his speaking style.

Not to put it all on the nebulous Marvel fan, as it happens in reverse with James Gunn's quotes. We're all far too eager to lash out over innocuous statements.

Im not saying its not a good film, but regardless if its good or not, Marvel has locked down that winning formula so no matter the quality, they will all be commercially successful.

Just because it hasn't happened yet, it doesn't mean it's won't happen just because Marvel is on the poster.

They've had a couple of near misses and could easily have a flop by the end of their current run.

GoTG was one of those rare cases where EVERYTHING just came together in the right way, including incredible casting with chris pratt and bradley cooper, and quite possibly the best use of a soundtrack in a movie I've ever seen.

Guardians WAY overperformed and did Winter Soldier numbers when all things considered no one would have projected it hitting anywhere close to there. Realistically it should have done ant man numbers with a property no one had ever heard of and no ties to the rest of the MCU.

I can't see suicide squad coming together in the same way. I liked what I saw in the trailer, but the cast isn't as good.

I don't necessarily think SS will do Guardians money (330M+ DOM/770M+ WW), but if they could get one solid over-performing hit from their DC stuff (outside of the two Dark Knight films), that would go a long way towards restoring some confidence.

She was fine in her small dose during BvS, but I am having a hard time seeing Gal Gadot carry a film on her own for 2 hours. As such, I am not expecting huge things from Wonder Woman. I am open to being pleasantly surprised though.

the only one I can think of there is Thor 2. And that was saved by Kat Dennings amazing rack

Thor 2 would be a better example of a Marvel film making money simply because it's a Marvel film. Ant-Man is a much better film and I can see people actually wanting to see it do to positive WoM.

I still don't get Ezra Miller for Barry Allen. He isn't who I would pick for the role.

Yeah I don't get it neither.

I'm not sure if warner/DC can pull it off. due to decisions on DC's end, the only recognizable properties they have are batman and superman, with mayyyyyyyyyybe WW and Flash bringing up the rear.

this means they need a lot of world building or INCREDIBLE casting to make what would otherwise be easy layups viable. And i've never heard anything about Gal Godot.

At this point scrapping everything and making a bat villain movie would be a smart move, but we all saw what happened with catwoman..

I don't see how JL improves on these numbers unless it is a hit with critics (even decent) and garners some positive WoM. Adding Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg just won't do it for the average person who associates JL with BvS.

The turnaround is too quick for the toxicity that surrounds BvS to fade away in time for JL.

Just look at the legs.

Ant Man made ~$123M after its opening weekend. Thor 2 made ~$121M after its opening weekend.

Thor 2 opened ~$28M (50%) higher than Ant-Man.

I sound terrible for even suggesting it, but I have this gut feeling that Chris Pine will carry the movie. With the push for reshoots on Suicide Squad. I could see them pushing for reshoots and have Pine add more humor to the movie mostly because I can't see Gadot having any type of levity after seeing her in BvS or Furious Series.

So what is WB next move?

I mean I just don't like anything of this direction they took with these movies.. MoS and this..

I'm hoping that WB ditches Snyder and goes in a better direction with Justice League and everything from here on out. It just ain't working right now. I absolutely love Snyder's Watchmen but something's changed for MoS and BvS and he isn't doing a good job. He's made Superman unlikable and Batman a murderer, Lex the Joker, and this last movie was just a directorial mess. Time to let him go and retool.

But it did crazy well in the foreign markets. How, I don't know. Maybe Hemsworth and Portman feel like they have better chemistry through subtitles?

We'll just end in a world where Suicide Squad 2 is much more anticipated than Justice League.

That's fine with me I guess, but to think this is the Batman and Superman together at last I got is a bit disheartening.

Maybe just maybe some people could only afford Wrestlemania this weekend, did you discuss that yet? See how it does next weekend.

Havent seen the movie yet, will soon to make up my own mind.

Yea I'm not sure Gadot can carry a movie either. There was nothing presented in BvS that gave me much hope on this front.

Um, what? Isn't Wonder Woman supposed to be a serious character, more so than even Superman?

I'm not familiar with Gal Gadot's previous work but she was the highlight of B v. S. I don't read DC comics but isn't she made from clay or some nonsense and is Zeus' daughter? I read that Chris Pine will be the damsel in distress in the WW solo film, she's the star.

I think Norse Mythology (even if it is a superhero version of it) adds to Thor's appeal in Europe. Compare the German, Russian, French, etc numbers for The Dark World to Ant-Man.

Ant-Man had better legs overall though

That's what the post illustrated.

Ah yes, the cornerstone countries of Norse mythology.

joking, pointing this out just to avoid any pedantic explanation of Germanic origins

I hope this spells the beginning of the end for superhero movies..

probably not considering the Disney train, but at least non-Disney.. rather see a Porky's remake than a superhero movie.. maybe Snyder can helm that...

it doesn't. as many have pointed out, Deadpool wildly overperformed maybe a month ago. this is just BvS being a bad movie.

Fat chance. And why? Just don't watch them if you're not interested..

I'd like to see the next Thor movie only set in Asgard. I think that would be far more interesting. Another added benefit is that we wouldnt have to watch Natalie Portman be terrible on screen. The concept of Thor and the mythology is really really cool and interesting in theory, but my god, the movies, especially the second one were just dull.

No idea if this is possible because I fell asleep about 40 minutes into Thor 2 and havent seen AoU yet.

Thor Ragnarok (3) is a sort of space adventure with Hulk and Thor (probably Lady Sif and the Warriors three too) if memory serves me well. Hopefully no earth stuff.

He likely wants these movies to die so movies that interest him can be made in their place.

I don't see how that logic is all that much different than the bunch of people wanting BvS to do horribly at the box office so the DC universe changes direction.

Goodness..lol. Portman sucks, but nowhere near as much as Dennings..and she barely gets any screen time!

Even with BvS, $800-900M for a film that's getting thumbs down WOM from a large portion of the audience. Not counting animated stuff from Disney/Pixar, The last original, non superhero film to hit those sorts of numbers was Inception over 5 years ago.

Wow Thor Dark World gets a lot of undeserved hate. It's a good movie. Not Winter Soldier or GOTG tier obviously but damn. It's at least better than all 3 Iron Man films, Incredible Hulk and the amazingly dull Ant-Man.
