Hyper Light Drifter |OT| We On A HyperLight Beam

I went west first because FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME.

And also because I paid zero attention to anything for the first hour I was playing.

In my opinion though, the west area is easier than the east and north areas, though both east and west bosses are pushovers in comparison to the north boss, who still isn't worth all the tears RPS cried over it.

I found West boss hardest in the game.

I also went West first, but like the poster below you I thought it was the hardest boss in the game. There are some difficult encounters in the west without any upgrades.

Went north because that's what the map in the housse was pointing to, love the combat in this game, feels very slick. Took me a dozen of tries to kill the boss but damn it felt great when I had his patterns down. My heart was pumping HARD !

Now that I have enough to get an upgrade, I have two questions : is there a way to respec and is there enough upgrade points to get everything ?

Hope there's a bloody palace type of challenge in this game.

No respec, but you can get everything.

West was by far the hardest for me, followed by North. North seemed to have the easiest normal enemies but the boss was a huge difficulty spike.

I couldn't find much of opportunity to attacks in against the West boss without getting slaughtered, so I had to resort deflecting projectiles back, which led to a really long drawn-out fight with lots of dodging.

It's nice to see everyone having different opinions on which area is the hardest. I think that shows it's pretty balanced. I personally did East -> West -> And North now. I found East the hardest, West just annoying and poorly laid out. I like North a ton, but it's kind of a push over now that I have so many upgrades.

Some things about this game give me Cave Story vibes, which i'm all about! I have a lot of criticism, but overall I'm enjoying it.

I'm at 9.5 hours, and still need to kill the north boss before I can head South. It's crazy people are doing this in ~6 hours, but I am exploring a lot of the secret areas.

I went west first and then upgraded my stuff and North and East have been cakewalks

in the south now to get the last one

Three hours in: what a game, absolutely awesome in every aspect, difficulty included. The combat is godly. I can see people maybe struggling with the means of communication but I think it's great. 11/10

I hope I made the right decision (initial playthrough) by upgrading to
the double dash? i think? A+A
first, those nodes are sparse.

What a world map! Haha

It's powerful, but that's why it's such a pain in the ass to get. Nothing carries over to NG+, so if you ask me the outfit effects are designed to be used and abused, providing you can figure out what they do.

And to be honest, the combat rhythm is balanced in such a way that using the buffs didn't feel cheesy. Like most of the upgrades in this game, they're less of a game-changer and more of a small extra comfort against the bloodthirsty hordes.

The cloak, sword and droid from a given set grant the same effect and don't stack, so you can mix-and-match to get up to three buffs at once. By endgame I was rolling with 2x stamina, 2x bullet charge rate and an extra health block.
I didn't realize that the costumes had added effects. I ended up never changing them. Do you have a list of what each outfit's effect is?
Same. I've found way more than I needed to fully upgrade everything, and I got the achievement for finding them all when there were obviously way more around the world. However, I now have 2.75 full ones (with everything fully upgraded) as well as all keys, monoliths, and costumes but no Hoarder achievement. Has anyone at all gotten the Hoarder achievement?
Same. I'm sitting at 2.5 and have very little desire to hunt down the remaining however-many there are left.

Dashing across gaps can be really unreliable sometimes. This is a gap I managed to do within my first two tries, but now that I'm trying to do it again, I just keep failing over and over.

youtube makes it really hard and scary for noobs like me to try starting something dont they... do people just spam claims against people hoping they get scared and dont do anything?

Just beat the challenge rooms; last one was damn hard, as they throw every enemy type at you. It creates interesting combat scenarios though.

Anyone else having a lot of trouble with being getting combo'd in this game? It seems like your invincibility wears off before you can start moving again.

Okay, beat the north boss. I would say he is the hardest of the 3 you can choose from.

Yup. No invincibility frames for you! I also notice that sometimes I get knocked around and I end up appearing somewhere random. You get used to it and/or stop getting hit as much.

Yes, I'm not sure if there even are any invincibility frames, or if there are the period is so small that it makes no difference. If you have less than full health, get hit by boss and can't immediately dodge the second attack then you've had it.

Yeah, I had trouble with that spot as well. There are a few places like that. I think the dev needs to probably adjust the terrain for those specific areas.

Thanks!

The skulls on the map are supposed to be bosses, right? Do I need to do something other than piece together a diamond out of the 4 modules to unlock the boss for that area? I'm in the north and I just filled in the diamond, but the path to the skull icon is still blocked off.

Not necessarily.
Go right from where you're blocked off and keep going down till you get to the door with the 3 triangles.

I went back to the eastern zone after completing the game see if I could get all 8 modules and keys and stuff. But I'm missing two and I feel like I've explored the entire thing. I think the hidden shit in this game is too well hidden. I also only have three keys in total.

That gap took me dozens of tries. No joke.

North was toughest for me too, though it was also the first boss I tackled (meaning I fought it with few or no upgrades/unlocks and little combat experience). I did wonder if he really was as hard as it seemed at the time.

For my fellow Linux bros (there are dozens of us! dozens!), I had to go get libcurl3:i386 to make the executable happy enough to run. (ia32-libs isn't a thing anymore in ubuntu)

Just started my first 8-modules dungeon (the one in the forest). Looks like I need to work on my dashing skills.

I did that today, and man, it did not go well to start. And the you hit the end of the dash part and it's like... "oh, shit". Then you die and do it all over again.

8 piece area discussion:

Are they all generally pretty small areas? Like the dash one right there seems to just be the dash area indoors, and like 2-3 other screens. Is that it, or is there more to it? Kinda burnt out on wall hugging at this point.

Caved and bought off the Humble Store. Loving the setting and art. The colors palettes feel so unique to me, feels so pleasing to my eyes. Sort of reminds me of the planets in No Man's Sky (which I'm excited for too just for those interesting colors). Love the minimalist pixel style and detail in animations. Combat is pretty methodical at the moment with being only two hours in. Headed east to
follow that odd dog...liking the mystery of it.

So I'm gonna be picking this up soon and I was curious, what're the controls like? Better with KB+M or controller? I would like to play with a Dualshock 4 controller if possible.

So... I resumed my game today, and the game decided to crash when I die. And now I can't neither load my save nor start a new game without crashing right away.

Well, the game just doesn't want me to play anymore. I'm out.

I was a backer but really the state of the game is unacceptable here. I'll wait a few month for it to go out of beta.

And now I just found that having a second D-Input controller connected to my PC was causing all the crashes. Wut... how?!
I guess I will continue playing now that it works again.

Just beat it, took 9 hours and I tried to do as much exploring as I could.. will probably check out a guide or something for the remaining bits and bobs...

that last boss was intense, I thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest maaaaaan

Finally done with the game, collected all keys, shards, outfits, monoliths and probably most of the gearbits but for some reason, the achievement Hoarder hasn't unlocked for me. After doing some searching on forums, it seems that achievement is bugged or everybody is missing something.

Don't think I'll attempt to do the other achievements because they're pretty ridiculous to do, one is not dying once while finishing the game and the other is dying 1000 times, I think. Can't believe I didn't unlock that one yet.

Such an awesome game, besides doing countless hours of exploring for collectables and secrets, I had a blast playing it.

New beta patch out:

any risk on trying this given its not a proper, non-beta update? odd

also, finding 8 pieces on each area has me kinda stumped. in the sense that I really feel like i've explored eeeeeeeverywhere

still think i'll go for it (and other collectables) to get the most out of the game, but i'll probably finish up till the last boss first

Seems to work fine for me... and the intermittent stuttering looks to have been alleviated by fullscreen window mode!
