NY mayor De Blasio makes racist joke, Hillary responds, someone annoyed

So you think he's a racist? That's what, "I'm not a racist, some of my best friends are black," implies, right?
In my case, I just thought the line about the children was too good to pass up. Of course, I'm using the word "good" to mean "hacky."

In literal terms, I think everyone is racist, but, no, I don't think DiBlasio is more racist than the average urbanite, and probably a lot less.

Edit: And it's a stupid, stupid joke to make as a public official. In the privacy of your own mixed-race home with your wife? Fine, although one could argue it's a micro aggression regardless of the circumstances. But he should know context doesn't scale.

Do white people use the term cp time? I'm black so I've only heard other blacks say it. Obviously not the smartest joke for a politician to make.

Is means that who you know doesn't give you the right to say (or do) what you said (or did).

EDIT: And since he does have a black family, one would think (at least I would) that he would know better.

You're probably right. Apologies if I was too forward in asking.

DeBlasio is a really good mayor and he gets a ton of shit from racist white people basically nonstop about how he disrespects the police, about how he has let "crime" (read: black people) run rampant, how stop and frisk is wonderful, how homeless people (read: black people) are everywhere in the city now, etc. As someone who is in NYC every day, I find the way people talk about DeBlasio to be extremely toxic so I am proudly willing to defend him and what he has done for the city.

I realize this puts me sort of on a hair trigger when it comes to attacks on him from the left. But he's a good mayor and he is really trying to improve the lives of the poor and middle class.

De Blasio has seemingly pissed off everyone but I'm not sure he deserves the hate, he's alright in my book especially after all the bullshit Bloomberg pulled.

Is CP Time considered to be different from African Time? Because the latter is real as shit.
So are Arab and Brown Standard times. It's real as shit amongst my circle of friends.

Adnan, we were supposed to all meet at 4:30pm, WTH?!

"Brown time bro lol"

Smh.

Seriously this isn't that bad. When you are linking to some place that calls Hillary Clinton a "Racist Elitist Femminazi Progressive" you really have to wonder if it's worthwhile to link to.
It was the first video that came up in my search. I think the she has clearly shown she has a serious lack of judgement and she is going to continue making these mistakes in the general. I'm not looking forward to a republican presidency, but if anyone can lose this time around it's Hillary.

If this was from Trump's mouth this thread would have an OT2 already.

It was a distasteful joke and it shouldn't have been made.

Trump has a history of racist remarks while de Blasio has been a progressive champion and we can afford him more leniency with the pitchforks and torches. It's also okay to say he should apologize because this was pretty tasteless.

A shitload of stuff is racist. I think that joke is racist - I don't think its a huge deal in the context of this election.

"the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races."
-Google

In the context of the definition, you could say in comparison to fire, that it is a match stuck. It's not a building on fire or a napalm strike.
You could say it is mildly racist. But again people don't often think in rational ways. They jump to extremes. It's either BAD or GOOD and I either AGREE or DISAGREE. I'm either OFFENDED or not.

It's instinct. We impulsively feel this way. But we should strive to make CALMING down and thinking rational an impulse too.

Thank you for thoroughly explaining what is racist. Yes, making jokes about racial stereotypes because you assume folks of said will be fine with it isn't racist at all.

I agree that it can be seen as MILDLY racist. But for me. When somebody states that something so silly and small is DISGUSTING and ARGH! I HATE IT! It's such an overreaction. Everyone can react however they want. I just wish people were a hundred times more rational and responded accordingly.

I've always had this viewpoint. I could...not...stand people who were easily offended in hs and now in college. It's not like i'm running around spouting racist jokes. But you can't talk about a Family Guy/SouthPark/Monty Python/Little Britain/etc without them wetting the bed.

I wish you could give somebody a rational argument JUST once, and they say, "you know what....you are right. I'm overreacting. It's not that big of a deal".

Maybe it's a southern thing? No idea. But I've heard that shit my entire life. It's like one of those jokes that's funny within the community but not when used by someone outside of it.

I live in Florida and never heard this.

I mean the closest equivalent is that you're working like/applying to be a city worker.

I'm a colored person and I've never heard of CP time.

Never heard of "CP time". My Indian friends always used to say "IST" for "Indian Standard Time", basically meaning they all show up super late.

Like I'm just watching the video and I am black but like why are people mad about this. It was a joke a bad one but man I joked about white people and I've definitely said way worse than that. I just can be overly sensitive of looks like a heavily telegraphed and kinda bad joke. I didn't even know what CP time was in the first place till this thread lol

De Blasio and his wife/kids, for those outside the US or those in the US (but outside NYC) who don't follow politics.

For the NYC audience, they knew it was a joke since they know the context.

This. People need to stop acting like people can be racist even if they know / have heard of / have existed on the same planet as at least one person of color.

I'm curious as to how many people in this thread that are taken aback in anyway about this are Black. This is a SUPER COMMON joke among Black people. I'm not saying it was necessarily the best idea to make that sort of joke in this setting (though it was a roast dinner and not a formal/normal political event) but this is a whole bunch of "nothing" as a controversy. de Blasio isn't a secret racist LOL
Exactly!

This is so much of nothing. I haven't even watched the video, and when I read the OP and saw how many responses there were, I was honestly surprised. DeBlasio is practially black by association, having a black wife and kids. He obviously knows the joke, and probably uses it at home. This doesn't nearly raise to the level of the N word. I and my (non-black) friends have joked with this practically all of my life.

Yes, this might not be the right venue for such a joke. But that's all it was, a joke. He was not making a statement about anyone. He was not stating a belief. This is so much of nothing.

I just wonder how many people are gonna give him a pass because he's a progressive Democrat.

With that said this ain't shit compared to what Republicans say and more importantly do on a daily basis.

But the "But my family is Black" argument doesn't resonate with me. Might be cool to talk like that at home amongst those that are comfortable with that.. That's all good.. Inappropriate in public though from the mayor of NYC.

How is Hillary catching heat for it? :/ Deblasio probably going to sleep on the couch. That's about it.

Reminds me of the GAF thread about the n-word the dicussion about some people seeming to get passes in their group of friends.

He forgot he wasn't at home with his wife that probably makes the joke and he jokes back.

Of all people, he should know better. Having a black family isn't a out. If anything it means you should understand that you can't make the joke.

Edit: At the same time, minor offence. Not that big to me as long as he gets the problem.

Her outfit is awful too, that yellow is gross. Need to shit can whoever is coordinating her wardrobe.
btw what's with hillary's tekken uniforms, lgbt thing?
Thread wouldn't be complete without commentary on what Hillary is wearing, obviously.

I was thinking more like when he gets home his kids are going to tell him he's awkward and uncool, that's probably going to sting a bit

I mean if you watch the video you can tell they planned that. It probably went over great when they practiced it at the country club beforehand. You'd think they would know better.

Save the joke? That was a bit.

They planned that and they fell flat. Not worth getting mad about unless you're wanting her to be a competent campaigner--then you should be pissed.

I just don't understand how she continues to fuck up on a fundamental level.

exactly de Blasio would have never said that if it wasn't a bitt......Why does she continue to try to be likable/hip when its not her strength i would never know.

Never knew it was a thing. Island Time fo sho. Hillary jumping on a racist grenade is basic manners in a mixed room and people sadly have to do that for relatives all the time. Bill may have been trying to keep it real and extended the private version of that a bridge too far.

The "bit" conspiracy theory sounds like a giant reach. There's no planning filter this could get through.
