NY mayor De Blasio makes racist joke, Hillary responds, someone annoyed

I just wonder how many people are gonna give him a pass because he's a progressive Democrat.

With that said this ain't shit compared to what Republicans say and more importantly do on a daily basis.

But the "But my family is Black" argument doesn't resonate with me. Might be cool to talk like that at home amongst those that are comfortable with that.. That's all good.. Inappropriate in public though from the mayor of NYC.

He's a progressive Democrat who's family is black and he's made huge strides in undoing draconian pieces of shit like stop and frisk.

It's not so much that he's given a pass as much as you can think he should apologize but also understand he's not a bad person. Or a snobby country club racist.

"Asian time" or "Brown time" is something I've always been familiar with, as an Asian American. I have never heard of "CP time" until now.

If you can spit fire like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6eLToYV1Yk&feature=youtu.be&t=428
cringe warning
aren't you an honorary member of the black community? Conclusion: not racist.

It looks like the whole night might have been a goldmine for this sort of shit lol. Leave the comedy to the professionals you goofs.
LMAO what did I just watch? Comedy should always be left to the comedians. The dude should also apologized. He can't make those kind of jokes.

If anything, this thread has taught me that every minority seems to have a version of CPT joke. Something I truly did not know. Thanks, GAF.

Same here.

It's basically why stereotypes are stupid. It doesn't make much since when everyone has the same stereotype.

In my case, I just thought the line about the children was too good to pass up. Of course, I'm using the word "good" to mean "hacky."

In literal terms, I think everyone is racist, but, no, I don't think DiBlasio is more racist than the average urbanite, and probably a lot less.

Edit: And it's a stupid, stupid joke to make as a public official. In the privacy of your own mixed-race home with your wife? Fine, although one could argue it's a micro aggression regardless of the circumstances. But he should know context doesn't scale.

Micro aggression? Nobody over 30 believes in that stupidity.
Mrs Deblasio probably jokes about that shit with him all the time. Was it stupid to make that joke in this political climate? Absolutely, but I think the we will be in a much better place when we can all joke like this with each other due to comfort, and racism is no longer the first thing that pops into our minds.

Man who gives a fuck, it was a whack ass joke but it ain't that fuckin serious. There is much more important shit to be upset about then some goofy ass white dude butchering a lightweight joke we use on ourselves

At this point I think you can make this joke/stereotype about every ethnic and racial group out there.

Except for the Germans and Japanese.

This. People need to stop acting like people can be racist even if they know / have heard of / have existed on the same planet as at least one person of color.

I'm not a huge fan of him either, however he is a huge proponent of supporting African Americans one off centered comment should NOT have people labeling this man racist as he is a huge ally.

This is probably the reasoning that led to him OKing the joke.

"Well since they say it to each other...."

That's terrible.

The man is happily married to a black woman, has a wonderful black family, and is a huge advocate for black people in the city of New York. Of course, none of these things rule out the possibility that he may be a closet racist, and I'm not saying he's above criticism. But c'mon, MIMIC...

Never knew it was a thing. Island Time fo sho. Hillary jumping on a racist grenade is basic manners in a mixed room and people sadly have to do that for relatives all the time. Bill may have been trying to keep it real and extended the private version of that a bridge too far.

The "bit" conspiracy theory sounds like a giant reach. There's no planning filter this could get through.

Did you miss my post that linked to Bill rapping shortly before introducing Hillary? Methinks they're using a pretty coarse filter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6eLToYV1Yk&feature=youtu.be&t=428

I'm 32 and I believe that jokes like that, even in good nature, help normalize discrimination.

I'm not saying he uses the word "they" like that (that never crossed my mind).

I mean if you watch the video you can tell they planned that. It probably went over great when they practiced it at the country club beforehand. You'd think they would know better.

And yet people are falling all over themselves to defend Hillary, or even de Blasio, for this.

Why "or even de Blasio"? The words actually came out of his mouth. And yeah, I'll defend de Blasio, just not for this, but I also think there's some hyperbolic attacks on him here.

Why "or even de Blasio"? The words actually came out of his mouth.

What do you mean? That's literally what I'm saying: that de Blasio is worse for saying that.

I'm also amused that some people actually think Hillary came up with that response off-the-cuff in order to save Bill. Some folks are just blind in their support for their favorite candidate.

Sorry -- I thought you meant the opposite. Which is how I would've phrased it.

It was actually de Blasio that made the joke. If you're going to structure your blame with "or even", it should be "defending de Blasio, or even Hillary".

He literally said it.

I misread your post (thinking you interpreted seat's post another way)

This joke applies to every group of people on the planet. We all run late.
I believe that if we could all share in the joke, as opposed to looking for sinister motives, we can see that people aren't that different after all.

A quick Google Scholar search demonstrates the ignorance of this statement.

I didn't have a full understanding of the history of the term. Ive only seen it in popular culture, and what I've seen there is just silly. People who are genuinely trying to learn are being taught that it's better to STFU because you might offend somebody by asking what language they speak in their home country.

At this point I think you can make this joke/stereotype about every ethnic and racial group out there.

And with my family is was Jewish time...show up awkwardly early.

The first time I heard about this thing was actually from my Puerto Rican friends...making PR time jokes about one of our constantly very late friends.

When copying the SNL 'LTTP gay marriage' skit goes wrong! What an unforced error, satire is tricky business best left for the comedy professionals (and even they still get roasted as well) lol

De Blasio, whose two multiracial children identify as black, downplayed the controversy.

"It was clearly a staged event," he told CNN on Monday." ''I think people are missing the point here." Mayoral aides added that the skit was not meant to offend and pointed out that it was far from the only risque joke during a night in which reporters put on a show to roast politicians and then the mayor returns the favor.

A Clinton spokesman echoed the point, saying the campaign "agreed with the mayor."
---
The mayor told CNN on Monday night that critics are "missing the point here," arguing that the entire exchange was scripted. "Every actor involved, including Hillary Clinton and Leslie Odom Jr., thought it was a joke on a different convention — that was the whole idea," he said.

A spokesperson for the mayor did not immediately respond to a request for comment about whether de Blasio's staff or someone else wrote the joke.

"Let's be clear, in an evening of satire, the only person this was meant to mock was the mayor himself, period," a spokesperson for de Blasio added in an email. "Certainly no one intended to offend anyone."

This election cycle has been a master class in incredibly ineffective PR management.

Is it that hard to just say, "I made an unfortunate mistake, and I apologize to those who were offended" instead of digging in your heels and broadcasting your tone-deafness to the entire world?

Idiots.

But such a search might also reveal that all the social justice terms that are becoming such common slang on the internet (racism as a structural phenomenon, privilege, microaggressions, etc.) are generally used in much narrower, more specific ways than they are now being used in discourse.

when I went to Cancun, the staff joked that they run on ''Mexican Time''

when visiting my family, my cousins joked that it's customary to arrive to parties on ''Portuguese Time''

Actually no that sounds pretty reasonable to me.

However, the witch hunt to call him racist especially when he is pretty much 100% he opposite is ridiculous.

Makes racist jokes, but wants the black vote.

Sounds like Hillary alright.

She doesn't just want the black vote, she feels entitled to it. And we keep voting for Clintons, so what does that say about us? :\

Why is she catching heat for this?

How is Hillary catching heat for it? :/ Deblasio probably going to sleep on the couch. That's about it.

She scripted the whole thing with De Blasio. Why either of them would think this is a good idea, or why someone on their staff didn't step in and say "no, don't do this", I can't fathom.

Do white people use the term cp time? I'm black so I've only heard other blacks say it. Obviously not the smartest joke for a politician to make.

One of my white cop coworkers made a CPT joke at me a couple of weeks ago. I assumed that most white people do know about it?

We (black Americans) say that term a lot. He probably learned it from his wife. Now his wife needs to teach him not to repeat it.

That's very true - those terms are used in academic discourse in appropriate ways, but they've been appropriated (irony) to be used as blunt cudgels to stifle speech in the general public as it stands (and academia is just happy to be relevant, so they don't care)

One of my white cop coworkers made a CPT joke at me a couple of weeks ago. I assumed that most white people do know about it?

Eh, most of my white friends have been taught by me about Indian Standard Time.

Surprised many of you haven't heard of CP time. It's an inside joke with a lot of black people. I use it often too.

Not sure if this is offensive to me or not. And if I'm not sure about that, then I'm definitely sure this isn't important enough to get upset over.

Holla at the same posters I see in here defending the joke who were complaining when sanders misspoke at that one debate about white poor people and people took it literal and disregarded his whole record for there argument's sake.

fyi, i think the joke is fine in a bunch of contexts, just terribly executed here and consequently another bad move for hilary.
