Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

There was 10x more last gen systems out when we got hit with all the cross-gen games when the PS4/Bone gen began. Take a look at how garbage the last gen versions were optimized.

I mean, that was a whole new console generation. This is just a n3DS sort of thing.

They say they won't divide the player base and no exclusives, but I bet they doesn't last until the end of the gen (if there even are still gens at this point).

Interested to see how games turn out, but it honestly seems like a pretty mediocre upgrade. The CPU and bandwidth upgrades aren't going to be enough to drive significantly higher resolutions or framerates. At least games will look prettier.

That CPU is going to be such a huge bottleneck lol. Also, I will laugh like crazy if NX ends up having a faster CPU than that. I'm getting Wii U flashbacks. That would be the weirdest thing ever. I think Sony is better off going with the $500 price point to toss in a better CPU and ensure that games are running the equivalent of PC ultra settings at 1080p 60FPS.

Otherwise, better than expected. That's around R9 290/GTX 970 power. Hard to say how it'll perform with that anemic CPU though. Either way, I guess I need a new graphics card. :P

Not much CPU performance bump. This means good news for PC gamers. No need to worry about their CPUs (low?-mid-high end ones). Their CPUs will last longer. Talking about ports from PS4k for PC ofc.

Extra 512 mb memory available doesn't make any sense, if both systems only have 8 in total. Bandwidth increase doesn't means memory is freed up from OS reservation.

It's just an additional amount released from the reservation to enable higher resolution framebuffers for 4k resolution support.

Man, when everything is coming together is hard to believe this was a reactionary move because of the competition like some delusions I keep reading lately (new version of resting in their laurels meme).

People keep forgetting that Sony isn't just games but media (movies, Hollywood), TVs,cameras, etc

But even still this some crazy vision, hopefully we get some confirmation of announcement soon. And hope we get some book with the insight of the masterminds behind the every move of PlayStation (or Sony as whole if possible) this generation.

What about all those cross gen titles from a couple of years ago? Did Monolith target the PS3/360 as a base when they released Shadow of Mordor? Titanfall?

They moved the focus to next gen once last gen sales started to drastically slow down. The circumstances are entirely different.

Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4.

Extremely good decision.

Probably the worst thread I've read in Gaf for not reading the OP.

OT:

Development focussed on the OG unit, so no worries about PoorS4 games.

Neo clearly aimed at Sony devotees who coincidentally are also their target group for PSVR (that from an interview with Shu).

No one loses out unless they're a baby who can't stand the idea of options being available to others, or that someone out there might have something a bit better than they do.

.

Pretty much. It looks like the tech is the same, just clocked faster and with more cu's. This isn't a new console with new tech.

GAF is a victim of its own hype. This seems to be what I expected out of the machine. It's a PS4 with a spec bump to accommodate VR and possibly 4K displays?

VR:

PS4 Base and NEO versions of a game will also need to have parity with regard to peripheral support. So don’t expect NEO Games to have exclusive VR modes. Sony makes no mention of PlayStation VR in the docs we've seen, so it's hard to know what that means for the persistent rumors that this upgraded PS4 will be able to support PSVR without the "breakout box" that the headset ships with. That said, so long as the NEO's upgrades apply to PSVR games, developers should be able to get even more performance out of Sony's VR headset.

4K:

Games running in NEO mode will be able to use the hardware upgrades (and an additional 512 MiB in the memory budget) to offer increased and more stable frame rate and higher visual fidelity, at least when those games run at 1080p on HDTVs. The NEO will also support 4K image output, but games themselves are not required to be 4K native.

Why are there people who thought there were actually going to be games at 4k? I mean maybe upscaled in 4k but your 4k TV already does that for you.

This was clearly so they could get a GPU that could natively output a 4K signal for when 4K videos get more popular on Netflix/Amazon and UHD's start becoming more common.

Starting to sound more like an excuse to keep the price high as production costs fall.

Considering that Sony makes the lion's share of their money off of software royalties, I'd imagine that they would much rather continue to sell original PS4s for <=$199 and Neos for <=$399 than just sell Neos for <=$399 and lock out the people who don't want to spend that much. The whole idea behind going this route rather than just moving on to the PS5 is to keep modern games accessible for people who don't want to spend $300+ just for a game machine while also providing options for consumers who are willing to spend more money for an improved experience.

Take a look at how badly optimized (3rd party) games were throughout that generation. I mean, this is some weird revisionist history here. We're also not talking about a generational shift, but an incremental upgrade within the same generation.

What I really wanna know is how significant of an upgrade will this NEO be? Will games be able to run at 4K/60fps?

Someone how I think this NEO won't be the massive upgrade I expected it to be. I think the games tailor made for this console will run more consistently at 1080p/60fps.

I wonder if this will spur MS and Phil Spencer to also make a new upgrade a new box, midway though the console cycle.

This is shaping up to be the most interesting console generation yet.

Complaining about theatrical performance of games running on a unannounced console what a time to be alive! I hope they offer so me kind of trade in program for our old consoles when this thing comes out.

This makes me slightly more okay with the idea of this thing existing, in that it won't effect me, but not really.

The difference doesn't seem significant enough for that to happen. I guess we'll find out when they announce this thing but for now the power increase doesn't seem that much

I don't mean they were going to drop PS4\X1 support.
I mean were were going to start seeing cuts on fps and res , effects as time goes on PS4\X1.

Lol at those of you thinking the normal PS4 won't suffer because of this. Sure, no exclusive games maybe at launch but I can't imagine that will last. Plus I bet this is going to be a pain in the ass to developers for optimization. Personally I don't like this trend in gaming but obviously a lot here have no problem with it because they will just throw money at anything Sony announces lol.

Guess we will have to wait and see how this ultimately effects the market and how it is perceived by consumers.

I think these leaks are controlled. They seem curated. First leak the info see how people react and gauge interest. Then peak specifics to reassure there won't be fragmentation. Hopefully they do it right.

Im excited and can't wait for more info! The PS4 has actually been PS2 2.0 for me. Missed last gen so games like TLOU and GOW3 are new to me. Loving Rachet and Clank!

Can't wait till E3...Sony,Nintendo, and MS what do you have planned?

The specs look pretty similar to me. To those that are tech savvy, how much of a difference is the PS Neo? Will we be playing TW3 and Bloodborne at 60fps, or will the differences be negligible?

CPU numbers are disappointing and so is the low bandwidth increase. Overall GPU improvements seem decent enough but CPU will continue to be the thing that holds the system back. I also really hope they will bump up internal IO interface to full SATA3 or higher, it's cheap enough now days.
Edit: 30 to 60 FPS could be possible depending on the game (heavily depending on the game) since you are more then doubling GPU resources. 4K is just dreaming, maybe for very non demanding games. I have 16gb fast RAM, 3770K at over 4ghz and 980TI on PC and I can't get 60fps at 4K at high graphics setting in most newer games.
