Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

You people downplaying the upgrades being serious here?

The jump in GPU is about 100%~ and CPU looks like it was clocked straight up by about 30%~.

For reference Intel has been squeezing us with 5% improvements for like the last 5 years and I don't think the GTX 980 Ti is even 100% faster than the GTX 780 Ti.

The numbers aren't impressive in the least.

So trinity must be their code name for the new vita or its their codename for the external PSVR box.

This rumor sounds good. E3 gonna be good.

Gross Sony. id rather go PC only rather than buy an updates console every three years. Think of the dev cuycles lol, where to aim for? A consol3 with two, three different specs?

Ridiculous. Hope people dont buy this crap.

100% and 30% doesn't sound impressive for a .5 upgrade.
If a normal gen bump 800%-1000%, half gen should get 300%-400%.

Im actually pretty excited for this, If they can get the cost to stick at $399 like the rumors suggested. I see a permanent OG ps4 price drop coming E3, and a "surprise" reveal of the ps4k as an upgrade option. I just really want more stable frame rates/60fps option and 4k bluray support.

So, go buy a $900 4K TV and a $400 NEO and enjoy your $1300 resolution bump?

-nope

The games won't be 4K lol. This is a box for people with/who want to buy a 4K TV and want to get a $400-500 PS4k over literally just a 4K blu ray player that also costs $400. A PS2 situation

Sounds good. Decent upgrade to CPU and bandwidth but that GPU bump is big. What is it, almost 4Tf?

I do like how Sony has guidelines for the upgrades for both sets of users. Smart move.

It's already running! Take your ps4 to any gamestop or bestbuy and they'll offer you credit today.

I already sold my PS4 when the news about this thing started alongside the few games I had for the thing. Overall I got my money back and over $60 in profit.

I expect the OG PS4 to lose value fast once the NEO/PS4K is formally announced.

Now I hope for Ni no Kuni to not be exclusive and KH3 to be on PC or NX

I'm still stunned the original leak came from a Gamestop convention.

If this is a good enough upgrade and there's more benefit than just improved performance, than I can see myself getting one eventually. E3 is going to be a trip this year.

This only makes sense if you expect people to pay 300-400% more, the performance improvements on components aren't there yet.

60fps of bust. IDC about 4k
Until someone else confirms otherwise, I don't think the new specs will even be enough to push most 30FPS games out now on the PS4 to 60FPS.

Slightly higher clock speed, a better GPU yes. Did the PS4 really need more memory bandwidth though? And is a %10 upjerk gonna do anything worthwhile?

What a waste of time. The specs aren't even that different. It's basically still a PS4.

Why not just wait a few years and release PS5? Ugh.

Yep, I think people here who think this will bomb will be surprised.

With 4K being in a tiny amount of homes in the US and predicted to be in only 10% of homes in three years, I guess I don't get why people would rush out to buy this thing. I think the amount of people who care about. 60 fps is vastly overestimated on this board.

This is a great chance of MS to regain the specs advantage if they decided to go with Zen and Polaris with the Xbox1.5, assuming they're willing the spend the money and can ensure BC with the OG Xbox One.

Meanwhile Sony is keeping players on their system with better exclusives, a wider slate of games including more indies, and fundamentally a whole new way to play with VR which Microsoft seem unwilling to commit to at the moment. If they truly leapfrog PS4 NEO many players will stay on board and simply upgrade to PS5 three or so years down the road, which will leapfrog the Xbox 1.5 again upon release. PS2 was underpowered next to the real Xbox 1 and it continued on very successfully.

Surely the CPU being a moderate improvement helps them to reel in developer's ambitions for the console. GPU improvements directly increase framerate and resolution possibilities, huge CPU increases fundamentally alters the possible types of games we could see on the device which would be impossible to achieve well on the base PS4. I think it's a clever push toward better performance but without altering the "deal" too much and keep the games able to run well on both but with effectively higher settings a la PC games.
Huh, that's actually a very good point. Keeps the price cheaper and ensures devs couldn't go balls to the wall ambitious and left 50 million (by the time this thing is out) regular PS4 users in the dust.

At same time this improves a lot of capability for VR due to significant GPU bump.

Enough to start an internal console war just inside the PS4 user base. This is huge. (in the worst kind of way, imo)

Yeah this is some ridiculous bullshit if you ask me. Not just for me as a launch product buyer, but for my friend who just bought one a month or two ago.

If a normal gen bump 800%-1000%, half gen should get 300%-400%.

Those type of increases are no longer possible. Half a decade of intel CPUs has brought us what? 30-40% IPC increase? GPUs increase used to be 80-100% every generation, now it's a fucking miracle if we get 50% increase in performance.

I only use my ps4 for MLB the show so I'll wait and see how much better 2017 looks but I really do think this is a unnecessary and very risky move for Sony.

A controller upgrade would be really nice. Nothing too substantial just build it with good materials along with a great battery life. I'm on my 6th DS4 now and I'd really like a robust controller that lasts for 3 - 4 years at least.

I think we are all missing the biggest point. This thing will probably launch around the same time as the Nintendo NX. Between PSVR and PS-NEO I don't think Nintendo are going to make any meaningful splash, maybe this was a ploy on Sonys part all along to put the final nail into Nintendo for dogging them all those years ago.

/conspiracy :D
