Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

This is a ridiculous move and I'll go out on a limb and say that it will be a harder sell than Sony thinks. It's a New 3DS without any exclusive games, and considering it's a more expensive console rather than a handheld, ouch. This should not be a product that exists and it's just going to irritate early adopters such as myself. People who buy consoles and handhelds by and large want real upgrades, not incremental ones.

Not to mention the base PS4 can already handle 4k/30 FPS for some simple indie games with its power and HDMI configurations.

It runs at native 1080p at 60 frames per second - but that's just the beginning of the story. Frozenbyte's impressive Trine 2 has migrated to PlayStation 4 in fine form - not only does it combine the optimal mix of resolution and frame-rate, but it's the only game to support stereoscopic 3D, running internally at an effective 1080p120 in the process. Indeed, according to the developer, Trine 2 could even hit 4K at 30fps should Sony ever unlock the output of the PS4 to support ultra-HD resolution.

There was just no will from Sony to unlock that (after all they wanted you to buy a new unit in 3 years...), and with these new specs moderately more complex games will still hit nowhere near 4k, especially with the requirement that they meet or exceed the performance of the base unit.

Hmm, so just out of curiosity, something like Tales of Berseria would be grandfathered in as it released in Japan before the late September window of requiring a day one patch or the October window of requiring support built-in, regardless of when it releases outside Japan, correct?

What a waste of time. The specs aren't even that different. It's basically still a PS4.

Why not just wait a few years and release PS5? Ugh.

They see money to be made from the burgeoning UDH/4K market and they don''t want to be left hanging if/when MS does indeed come out with a more powerful Xbox One. That's on top of the rumors that NX will also be more powerful than the current PS4/Xbox One.

Sony is going to know what MS felt like at E3 2013. Don't worry.

I can't even right now. Some of you are making some absolutely asinine assertions and the salt is spilling forth at a great rate. If you think this is going to be a repeat of MS 2013, you truly have no clue what you are talking about.

I sure hope so. Screw this noise man. Dont make this become a thing guys. This doesnt seem good for anyone in the industry except Sony and perhaps retailers.
Not a single person has brought up a good counter-argument. This gives the consumers a choice they previously didn't have, I don't see a problem with it.

They say there will be no exclusive content or restrictions but if this new iteration turns out to be far easier to code decent 60FPS games than you may just see developers opt to spend more resources on the Neo version and have the original PS4 version "run" like the time of cross-gen between PS3/PS4/X360/Xbone.

Well I think the obvious thing is that this is Sony's UHD blu-ray player. UHD blu-ray players are $400 right now. So assuming prices on those don't drop, this will be a UHD player that will play video games.

They can support UHD without changing the specs.

Who said there won't be a PS5 in 3-4 years?

If you guys don't want to upgrade, DON'T UPGRADE.

This is going to make consumers hesitant to buy PS5 day one. Just follow the usual console cycle and do a real generation upgrade. No need for this stop gap nonsense.

And i won't be upgrading. I just don't like what this means for the console industry going forward if this continues.

In theory the extra compute units could mean you could actually spare them to do some of the GPGPU stuff originally speculated for this gen without having to worry about saving enough for normal GPU functions.

I think the bottleneck might be overstated. I'd need more info tho.

If NX is more powerful than OG PS4, I guess a lot of people, myself included, would likely switch to NX for their multiplatform needs.

Are you a Nintendo fan? Do you really think people will go to a Nintendo platform for multiplatform needs? Lol.

I just bought a new PC last week after rocking just my PS4 for a few years. I was originally planning on buying this new iteration but that's probably not necessary now!

Literally nothing changes. Your OG PS4 still plays the same games it was going to play. NEO happens to be a 4k player and offer minor graphical enhancements. If this launches at $400 it doesn't matter. People will buy or continue to by the OG model. No one loses anything if this doesn't pan out and no one loses anything if it's a success.

A 4.1 TF GPU in a closed box is nothing to sneeze at. This will outperform anything known on the market by a wide margin. He'll it's within a 20 percent distance of AMDs high end 390x.

The only disappointment is the CPU. They probably are trying to stay at 399.

Typo was fixed in the article, time to update the OP to prevent further misunderstanding.

Sony would want to push that, especially for their exclusive games, just to show what it can do (and how it doesn't affect the normal PS4)

Actually, I totally forgot Bloodborne is an exclusive. Perhaps it is possible. However, I doubt any third party would go back and do the same.

About what I expected. New hardware, but still in line with the old hardware and there will be no specific NEO ps4 games. People might think Sony are crazy for doing this (holy shit some of the overreactings in this thread), but they were never crazy enough to segment the user base or able to suddenly make AAA games run at 4K on a console.

If NX is more powerful than OG PS4, I guess a lot of people, myself included, would likely switch to NX for their multiplatform needs. If NEO is more powerful than NX, that at least "stops the bleeding". I guess Sony recognizes that their power advantage is significant in an age where all consoles are pretty much the same, and first party output is lacking all around.

Third party publishers needs an audience to sell too first and foremost. Until Nintendo figures that out first the specs are irrelevant.

I just wish i could understand why.

1. PS4 is selling fantastically well, making the entire Sony company turn their eyes to them, system is making profit. They are smashing their competition everywhere despite any change they tried or try to make.

2. Who asked for this? There is probably a proportion of a 1 gazillion to 1 of people who asks for freaking Folders on the system instead of a upgraded PS4 at this point.

Is this a reaction move because Microsoft is doing it? Or because NX might be more powerful? If so, they openly said they don't understand the reason PS4 was so successfull, and seems like they still don't.

Sony, I already didn't have much money to give you, and now you are asking for even more. Nope!

I cannot see how this is actually a good idea unless:

A) You have yet to buy a PS4
B) You have a lot of money to throw around

Even if there's a trade in program, I assume you'll still have to throw in more than $150 of your own cash for the upgrade. As somebody who spent 12 months saving up to upgrade his ancient 2010 computer to something that's probably considered merely mid-range, this shit is a scary precedent and it goes without saying that I do not like it.

Not a single person has brought up a good counter-argument. This gives the consumers a choice they previously didn't have, I don't see a problem with it.

The implications for the future of gaming consoles being a phone like upgrade every three years ( incremental at best even, looking at these supposed specs ) is not something Im cool with. Id rather go PC at that point.

It wouldnt benefit the consuner either. Because right now you could do 5-6 years with your console and games would be tailored to that.

Now youll have some wonkey ass framey versions on the old regular ass ps4, while the neo runs it at 50fps unlocked for instance.

How do you think this would stack up against the NX's rumored stats?

I don't see why any developer would go back to update their old games to make use of the Neo's upgrades, especially FromSoft.

Generate new sales. Compete against other publishers putting out games that DO support it. Sony will be making sure this is not a headache for developers and it should be relatively simple to go back and bring about some simple enhancements utilising that extra horsepower. Some will be literal framerate improvements, others will go to greater lengths and improve texture performance, AA and so on. Why not create good will amongst the fan base of your game and give them a PS4 NEO improvement?

This thread is funny.

In the other NEO/PS4K threads some of the bigger issues were:

Split the userbase
Dev issues
OG unit becoming a poor relation

This GB leak seems to address all three of these points, and yet people are still raising them as issues.

Help me here.

Lmao yeah sure they will...

I'm very disappointed with the CPU though. Not really a big upgrade when even the original ps4's CPU was very mediocre specswise when it was released.

Mixed feelings that I would need to buy a new ps4 after I bought mine last month after waiting for more that 2(3?) years to get one. The games that I really want hasn't even come out yet.

Looks like FFXV will support NEO as it was mentioned in the article that late september games will be patched.
