Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

Man, while I suppose it's nice to not split up the userbase, I can't help but feel that a PS4K model is going to be kneecapped from the start if the only thing devs are allowed to do with it is make enhanced graphics/framerate versions of base-PS4 games, with no features that would only be possible via improved hardware.
That's the point. Improved versions for Devs if they want it. Mostly created for VR

There are many workleads that will not benefit from GPu off-loading, or would perform worse than on CPU though.

I get this, but your still getting a faster clock on the CPU.

As far as I know you can't clock up Jaguar 3-4 GHz and keep it stable. Switching overall CPU arch would cause a number of other issues.

This is probably realistically the only way to handle it. Plus devs have already said they are trying to use gpgpu to make up for the CPU bottleneck on the current CPU.

Now waiting for Xbox 1.5 rumors so we can compare for no reason...

Definitely an interesting development. Hoping we'll see more titles be 1080p/60fps and some older games get that treatment. Highly doubting anything significant in 4k at all, even current graphics cards seem to struggle mightily with it.

For me, I have a sealed 20th anniversary PS4 in my closet. Curious how its value is going to be impacted. I was considering opening it recently, as I do want a PS4, but if this is coming out then I'm not even going to bother. Curious if I can still get the ~$1,000 it had been selling for over the past few months.

Just not sure what to think about this. The fact is that that the increases from Moore's Law are much larger than they were 15-20 years ago. Where 8n became 16n 20 years ago, 64n becomes 128n, an 8n difference vs. a 64n difference. At some point, I feel like console gaming won't become viable. I just don't think significant revisions every 3 years or so is smart. I do think this will be successful to an extent, and Sony may try it for the PS5, but I do feel like gaming streaming a la OnLive will be the future, even though at the current time, residential internet can't handle it. It's just so odd seeing this happen.

E3 should be super interesting...

This is a clear sign to me that Sony have discovered (or devs have told them) that the PS4 doesn't have much performance headroom for VR and is not really fit for doing anything very complex at the framerates that are needed. The horsepower just isn't there.

I think anyone who is planning on buying PSVR but is sticking with the PS4 is craaaazy.

If true the CPU is far too weak side by side with the other specs. Gonna wait on this for sure but it's nice to have options

I'm really excited for Horizon running on a Neo :)

I'm also there day 1 - OG can go on the spare room, Neo under the living room TV.

I'll stick with my PoorS4. Wonder how this will affect PS5 pickups, will probably just wait for PS5.5 instead if this is how they're playing it.

This was clear to most of us on the day this console was released.

People seem really paranoid about this. They shouldn't be.
Yep people continue to lose their shit without reading the story itself.
Throughout the documents, Sony repeatedly reminds developers that the frame rate of games in NEO Mode must meet or exceed the frame rate of the game on the original PS4 system.

To the people wanting a DBZ comparison:

PS4 = SSJ Trunks
PS4k = USSJ Trunks (the huge and slow form; the CPU represents the slowness preventing its full potential)

I love how this site can make me feel like i'm the crazy one for wanting newer technology that improves gaming performance that also doesn't make my older library obsolete. This place is the best.

So instead of pushing devs to optimise games they are going with easy route by giving them better hardware.

I mean making games is not easy. Some of the these games are made and optimized for 4-5 years. At a certain point you are pushing them into bankruptcy if they spent any more time optimizing. That's not to say games shouldn't be optimized at all, but it is not as easy as throw more people on the the issue. Even the simplest of solutions are costly ones, dropping the frame rate or resolution, and then everyone complains it looks like garbage and avoids it.

Nearly all games on consoles are ports of very much superior PCs, no amount of time and money will make those games look and run as well as they do on those PCs. But a PS4k would get it closer.

How is this anywhere remotely like a New 3DS? The raw GPU power alone is going from 1.84 TF to 4.2 TF.

The CPU is still garbage, but who knows what sort of improvement you get from up clocking it.

so if this is true, then it lines up with one of the potential options DF was talking about: not risking jamming big expensive parts in that aren't ready for 2017 yet, and instead just shrinking the current APU and increasing the CU's on the GPU. this will make it much easier for devs to work compatibility into their games and also be able to access the hp in the new unit.

it will also be much more efficient and cheaper to produce. this means we will be getting a PROPER upgrade with the PS5 in 3 or 4 years. that's perfectly fine with me.

for those that don't understand the point, ask yourself what was the point of the PS1/PS2/PS3 slim models? efficiency and cost savings. PS4K is just trading us the cost savings for updating the specs so that we can get 4K media support, better PSVR games, and slightly improved normal games. there's really no drawback here considering the og PS4 will continue to exist (for a while) and receive price cuts.

waiting on price cuts before getting a PS4 finally? PS4K will ensure the og model gets one sooner than later. worried that PS5 will be just around the corner and making PS4 irrelevant? PS4K will give you some improvements to hold you over while you wait for better GCN and HBM technologies to become more viable for home consoles.

Hopefully it flops, I don't want my consoles to get incremental upgrades every year ( and this one is ruomed to be freaking 399$...)

Might as well just build a PC at this point

It is interesting we are looking at a more than 2x better GPU stuck with that CPU though. I wonder if Sony has some nice tools in place to get the most out of that GPU paired with that thing.

I love where this has gone in 2 months. First Microsoft talks about doing this at a press event and then suddenly Sony starts leaking and essentially the theoretical plan Microsoft laid out is being done by Sony with the PS4.

I wonder what games they'll showcase running g on the Neo hardware at E3? An update to UC4 later in the year to support this could be something else also this means No Mans Sky could also be running exceptionally on the Neo.

Read it again. Of course the framerate wouldn't be lower on the higher spec machine. It could run at 20fps on PSPoor though.

Then it was always going to run like that. Come on man. The OG PS4 will continue to tbe the base. you don't ignore 60 million users.

You already see games struggle with stable framerate. Neo would just offer minor technical and graphical improvements.
