Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

I would quit console gaming if they go full steam machine model too.
But I don't think this is the case, yet.

I think this is Sony making PS4 slim and found out that they can put a little more transistors into the chip at low cost so they try to capitalize it, which I'm somewhat ok with.
As long as I still get my true full generation leap PS5 without PS4 Neo holding back.

I dont think they are done with numerical values at all. PS5 will be for the next "minimum standard jump". it'll probably just come a few more years later than it would have if PS4K didn't exist.

And i also agree with you about this probably coming about because of 16nm's dividends for them

Inevitable PS4K commercials and PS4K only screenshots are eventually gonna come though.

Might be quite the threads for Playstation when we start see differences....

I'm sure they will, they will want to present the games in the best possible light, but I don't think that's the sort of thing the type of consumer who buys a regular PS4 over a PS4K to save $100-200 will give a shit about. The key (which by the sounds of it is something Sony is taking seriously) is making the software compatible across the board with both systems.

These threads are hilarious. People are so resistant to change even though this sort of thing is the best thing that could happen for the industry.
I'm fine with change, but consoles have their own benefits in terms of locked hardware and a value proposition that extends for many years. How about Sony put those framerate standards on the PS4 instead of the new hardware?

All this means is that the NEO version will become the new baseline and the PS4 will become legacy hardware before it even hit its stride.

This is the real reason for the codename. Everyone is jumping to the Matrix but really Sony was just using it as a nod to NeoGAF

It's so weird to me.

Where people this upset when the iPhone 3G got announced?

Console just have never had half steps or small upgrades. it always been big upgrades.

I much more in favor of upgrade over "slim" version of consoles. I would never think about rebuying a console just to get a smaller version.

I will really think about buying this. If they upgrade GTA it would be day one for me.

Why would you?
Because I bought a PS4 to play the Sony exclusives at their best, which I'll soon need a NEO for. Sounds like every PS4 game will get the cross-gen treatment and I'll be stuck with the "last gen" version until upgrading to the "next gen" console.

What framerate standards?

And nothing in the information in the OP points towards the ps4 becoming "legacy" hardware.

Will they call this "PS4 Elite" or what? Curious how they will separate the SKUs.

Also, pretty sure MS has an upgraded X1 incoming, or else Sony wouldn't be risking their lead with this move. It must be certainly to not give MS an edge.

Lastly, will PS4 and NEO sales be added together? Shall we count PS4 sales as one single console, like 3DS and N3DS?

I dont know what that expectation is outside of "I didnt think there was going to be a more powerful console untill next generation"

because thats the only thing is true. All these doom and gloom scenarios about somehow the Neo causing there to be bad PS4OG versions and vis-versa are hyperbole.

If a game runs bad on a i5 970, its not gonna magicially run amazingly on a i7 980. Thats what we are looking at here.

That's what I was referring to.

This is a new concept for console gamers so some people are afraid that devs will prioritize one version and half-ass the other for whatever reason and the one they actually care about will suffer because of it while some people have other issues turning them off.

What framerate standards?
According to the article Sony is hardcore about making sure the NEO mode of its games have improved framerate.

In the documents we’ve received, Sony offers suggestions for reaching 4K/UltraHD resolutions for NEO mode game builds, but they're also giving developers a degree of freedom with how to approach this. 4K TV owners should expect the NEO to upscale games to fit the format, but one place Sony is unwilling to bend is on frame rate. Throughout the documents, Sony repeatedly reminds developers that the frame rate of games in NEO Mode must meet or exceed the frame rate of the game on the original PS4 system.
I wish they were such sticklers for framerate when it comes to their PS4 games, and maybe then I could look at the NEO as an optional extra with more bells and whistles as its being optimistically described, and not as THE version to buy if you want games that perform well out of the gate.

And my talk of the PS4 becoming legacy is in terms of the face of the console and its games moving forward, even with the huge install base on the PS4.

People also hate Apple for a month or two after they've released a new product which makes their accessories incompatible. It's going to happen again when the new iPhone doesn't have a headphone jack.

They'll get over it.

Sure....they are going to have the same disks methinks...just with the neo software unlocking the extra power for those games optimized to use it. Current and previous games with no neo configuration won't have that though.

Based on the report, this strikes me as the best possible way to execute the PS4k from a consumer perspective. I do wonder how developers will feel about being mandated to develop for two different SKUs now. I can't see any developer leaving the PS4 because its install base is so big, but I do wonder if developers are overall happier with the new specs or negative about the increase in work.

I haven't bought a PS4 yet, but this looks like the model I'll want to jump in with.

If devs are given two versions of a console, one with a GPU that's approximately twice as fast, it won't be hard to have one version running at 1080p and the other running higher (probably 2560x1440 in a lot of cases) with a few graphical settings increased. It's horribly unlikely that OG PS4 games would fall by the wayside due to "lack of optimization."

Should be interesting to see all of the hypocrites that say they don't bother with PC gaming because of things like upgrades run out and buy this day one. I'm seeing many of these same people in this thread screaming "Day 1!" already.

I'm calling it: SonyDOOOOOOOMED!!!!!

too early?

More like: SonyGREEEEEEEEEEEDYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!

And: Sony(MIGHT-BE-KINDA-SCARED-OF-FUTURE-XBOX-AND-NX-SURPASSING-THEM-IN-IN-POWER)

Lasty: Sony(REALLY-WANTS-YOU-TO-USE-PSVR-WITH-A-PS4K-)

this thread was a mistake

i'm sorry guys

Why do you say that? Cause a bunch of people are upset now? It seems to me the news was going to pop up here anyway and people were going to find a reason to fight amongst themselves about it. This is a big deal and it's going to be tough thing for some gamers to handle until they see it being done right (right by them). I have to say based on that article it looks like Sony is serious about making this as painless and fair as possible so I think by the time next year rolls around tunes will have changed some. Just my two cents

The ones written about in the OP article that you didn't read...;)

Basically Sony saying Neo mode framerate must be as good or better as OG PS4 standard - presumably so you don't get devs going all out for 4K or MegaUlyta Gfx and tanking game performance to worse than the baseline console.

Plenty of us said just the opposite though. Fuck this PC-like different performance for different machines.

Um what?!?! What's the problem with wanting this and not being interested in PC gaming?

I bought a PS4 day 1 to play Sony exclusives at their best, before many AAA exclusives are even released I hear that an upgraded PS4 might arrive that will run Sony exclusives even better than on PS4.

Why would I not have a problem with this?

Because there are already a wealth of Sony exclusives on the console, because this generation is not about exclusives and wont ever be, because nobody guaranteed you would have the best hardware years later.

Honestly, I feel like some of you would digest this better if this was just the PS5 with backwards compatabilty. Either way, this was always going to happen as the PS4 was not a console that was powerful enough to be cutting edge more than a few years. Instead of getting games with increasing lower performance later into the generation, we are getting a mild spec bump, but still allowing everyone to be on somewhat equal terms at least when it comes to what games are available to play.

This f-ing insane, here I was saving money for an NX and now I have to worry that Sony might drop this bombshell this E3. Time to see which one will impress the most, Zelda or GOW4.
Now users here can finally get the 60 fps Bloodborne they were wanting.
Honestly they might as well just do it for the sequel or next FS game.

I did read it. That's not a framerate standard.

It's amusing to see. Can't wait for e3 lol

Alright I've warmed up to the NEO idea by now. Especially if it means they can keep it around $399 and lower the current PS4 to $299. That creates some good options for PSVR in particular.

Timescale-wise it works out great for me since I wasn't considering picking up a PS4 until closer to Fall anyway (hopefully along w/ a copy of Dreams, if that came is out by then). And given the immediate choice of Neo and PSVR, I'd just get the Neo and hold off on PSVR until next holiday season or something.

Also: the other secret codename is Neo-GeoStation.

Of course they would devs have more power to work with .
But they can only do that because they now have 2 forms of hardware .

How is neo like for like with pc, it's nothing like a.PC it's juet a more powerful ps4

So what happens if hypothetically, Sony drops the base price of the OG PS4 to 199.99? The Neo launches at 349.00 price point and there is a "upgrade" plan in place say 150$ for the upgrade.

How do you guys think this would be received or what would you change?
