Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

Man if I can play Bloodborne, Driveclub, Dark Souls 3 etc at 60fps I'm in. Surely at least the exclusives will receive a bump in performance.

Main reason im worried about this is that I really don't want the iOS model to come to consoles. Seems like this could be a slippery slope. Your device not being able to run all the cool games after 3 years, having to always check to see if your system is supported by a game, that's not why I buy consoles. I'm glad the PS4K won't have exclusives, but I'm worried about what the future will bring. If this could happen, certainly exclusives could as well eventually.

So that article basically makes it clear this thing will be out by October right? Did I read that correctly?

Also anyone care to elaborate on the spec bumps. Is it as powerful as had been rumored the last couple weeks?

slap a PS logo on a PC

welcome to the new videogames

But for real by and large you guys should expect better looking games than vastly better running games since its using the exact same cpu but at a higher clock rate. There will be framerate improvements with this machine but the more noticeable difference will the game graphics and image quality

I don't get it your mad because it will look better?
I'm mad because I thought I already invested $399 to jump into next gen to play AAA Sony exclusives like Gran Turismo and God of War etc at their best but apparently I need to invest another $399 to get to that point now.

That's what I was referring to.

This is a new concept for console gamers so some people are afraid that devs will prioritize one version and half-ass the other for whatever reason and the one they actually care about will suffer because of it while some people have other issues turning them off.

And its a foolish belief because there is not one example that you can put forward of two sets of hardware with such similar architechure having anything wildly different in terms of performance.

This is not like porting from PS3 to PS4 or vise versa. This is like overclocking your graphics card and CPU. Nothing else will change.

You didn't do the proper research. Sony is admitting to the world they released a weak machine. This 4.5 isn't much better. I'm all for the upgrade! LMAO

I'm pretty sure he's referring to people who hate on PC because you typically had to upgrade sooner than you do with consoles.

You don't have to upgrade your pc, your old one still runs new games.

Just like nobody is forcing you to get the new ps4. The old one still runs new games.

Its the same on ios/android as well.

You guys will get over it.

No guarantee its by October but if games are required to release supporting it at that point then it can't be too far afterwords. with 2 months of that for sure I would assume.

As to specs reflecting rumors hit and miss. Some of it has been accurate / close some stuff is clearly off from what has been reported here

Does anyone know if 1440p has obvious scaling artifacts up to 4k? I really hate scaling artifacts, especially since 1080p scales evenly to 4k.

The good news for them is the info on their box is nothing other than that it exists. With Sony's specs leaking into the open like this they have time to tweak / optimize what they are looking at to try and match or exceed it.

Like they did with the Xbox one?

I expect another round of fud if the specs for the next Xbox don't match up.

I don't have any issue with this device lol.

Should be interesting to see all of the hypocrites that say they don't bother with PC gaming because of things like upgrades run out and buy this day one. I'm seeing many of these same people in this thread screaming "Day 1!" already.

You can also enjoy the hypocrites that defend that PC's don't need constant upgrades act like consoles need constant upgrades.

So it's going to be like the painful year and a half of split generation versions all over again is it not? I think Sony is making a gigantic mistake.

I have a PSVR preordered so it's either this or that but now what happens in two more years? I'm not a fan of PC gaming for these exact reasons but if i going to have the headaches now I might as well get the versatility too. Plus at least I can better predict my upgrades.

I hope I don't get in trouble for asking here but where is a good place to start if im going to possibly switch over to PC gaming?

The GPU in the PS4K is solid. You'd need something like a 290 or above to definitely beat it. So rather, it's pretty good if it comes out this year. The CPU is still crap though. :(

You know, I'd been pretty chill on this whole thing up until now, but something about the combination of it not just being for VR or 4k, "starting this October" and "every game" kinda tweaked me.

I was there in line at the midnight launch of PS4. The lineup for the first two years were pretty much garbage.

I moved back to Japan last fall, sold my PS4 before the trip and rebought a white model at the end of January. Now after $800 in PS4s here we are not even 3 months later, and just when the lineup is FINALLY starting to get really good, I find out that this machine is destined to soon be second class, and outmoded.

I get it. I can still play the same games.

I get it. There are 40 million PS4s out there, Sony's not dropping support any time soon.

Still feels kinda shitty. I bought a first gen iPad and it didn't take long for that to be left by the OS wayside. I have no doubt that within 18 months we'll be seeing stories about "runs really poorly on old PS4." Because the 40 million sold is still only a fraction of the market they're aiming for.

Good question I'd also like to know will the xbox 1.5 be able to ditch the esram and still have ease of development and compatibility with xbox one, it'd be a shame if their still saddled with it

No I won't. A big reason I switched from PC to consoles because I don't like checking to see if my PC can run a game before buying it, same with iOS and "supported devices". I just want a box that will run every game for that ecosystem for 5+ years. I'm glad this doesn't have exclusives and theyll require the OG PS4 to be supported but I'm very worried exclusives will happen eventually

There will be no split generation versions. There is a PS4 and a PS4+ that has prettier graphics. They play the same damn games

Will they call this "PS4 Elite" or what? Curious how they will separate the SKUs.

Also, pretty sure MS has an upgraded X1 incoming, or else Sony wouldn't be risking their lead with this move. It must be certainly to not give MS an edge.

Lastly, will PS4 and NEO sales be added together? Shall we count PS4 sales as one single console, like 3DS and N3DS?

Pretty much certain of this. They may specify the number of PS4 NEO shipped out of the quarterly IR updates, but in the end this is just a new model of the PS4 with the same environment, features and, most importantly, library of games. Sales of PS4 NEO will add up and boost even more the momentum of the PS4.

I can't even imagine what the the Q4 shipment could be if this thing is out at the end of year, with PS VR, the momentum, the exclusives and all the third party support from West and East...

You know what I just realized? You know how in 2013 leading up to the launch of these systems we were inundated with FUD and back and forth about how many Ps each console could do and frame rate comparisons and how far you had to be from your tv for resolution to even matter...ect...? We're gonna do that all over again in like 6 months, aren't we?

For me, my general diatate for PC gaming comes from the lack of true plug and play. I hates. Checking drivers, fiddling with settings etc. I have no problem spending money to upgrade.

Wasn't that actually 1080p with 4X MSAA and it got widely misinterpreted? Something about them using 4 1080p buffers.
Internally renders at 4k with 16xAF and 4xMSAA and downsampled to 1080p. I mean, how many 4k TV's did we have back then anyway and it's basically what most PC guys do with their games on less than 4k monitors for improved IQ. Such a feat on a PS3 was bonkers, can't imagine what such a team would be capable of at 4k on a NEO.

The bigger takeaway is how much ahead this puts Sony over MS and how is MS going to answer back, the difference in some multiplats on PS4 vs XB1 was pretty tangible in resolution and framerate, so how would doubling the GPU power, increasing ram bandwidth and improving the CPU all way over the XB1 compare. The first comparisons are going to be very interesting.

Also, I think Sony needs to ready a game for this system, what will it be, despite they saying that they want all games compatible and have two code samples, I figure they also want to show the improvements that the NEO will bring........so I'm thinking a couple of 4k PSN games, some 2k games upscaled to 4k with mid tier graphics and a really graphical screamer at 1080p 60fps....perhaps GOW4, but most likely Zero Dawn. Would love to see the improvements to TLG and FF15 as well.

Thats pretty fucking amazing for $399 on top of it being a uhd player. I wonder how the nx compares to 3.7 tflops.
TBH I don't think NX is going to come within touching that. One possible reason b/c Nintendo wants to keep the cost low. Expect something around the 2.8 tflop range or so.

Which is still quite good and well above standard PS4 and XBO.
