I think they should call it PS4+.
Absolutely. Your point about the system's library is the real killer. The PS2 this thing was not. 2014 sucked SHIT, across both platforms. 2015 was an improvement, but 2016 feels like we're finally in it.... And that's it. Great. You know, I'd been pretty chill on this whole thing up until now, but something about the combination of it not just being for VR or 4k, "starting this October" and "every game" kinda tweaked me.
I was there in line at the midnight launch of PS4. The lineup for the first two years were pretty much garbage.
I moved back to Japan last fall, sold my PS4 before the trip and rebought a white model at the end of January. Now after $800 in PS4s here we are not even 3 months later, and just when the lineup is FINALLY starting to get really good, I find out that this machine is destined to soon be second class, and outmoded.
I get it. I can still play the same games.
I get it. There are 40 million PS4s out there, Sony's not dropping support any time soon.
Still feels kinda shitty. I bought a first gen iPad and it didn't take long for that to be left by the OS wayside. I have no doubt that within 18 months we'll be seeing stories about "runs really poorly on old PS4." Because the 40 million sold is still only a fraction of the market they're aiming for.
Why would you buy a console for content that doesn't exist yet?
Man his thread is infuriating.
Based on the report, this strikes me as the best possible way to execute the PS4k from a consumer perspective. I do wonder how developers will feel about being mandated to develop for two different SKUs now. I can't see any developer leaving the PS4 because its install base is so big, but I do wonder if developers are overall happier with the new specs or negative about the increase in work.
I haven't bought a PS4 yet, but this looks like the model I'll want to jump in with.
No I won't. A big reason I switched from PC to consoles because I don't like checking to see if my PC can run a game before buying it, same with iOS and "supported devices". I just want a box that will run every game for that ecosystem for 5+ years. I'm glad this doesn't have exclusives and theyll require the OG PS4 to be supported but I'm very worried exclusives will happen eventually
Somebody had to say it.You don't have to upgrade your pc, your old one still runs new games.
Just like nobody is forcing you to get the new ps4. The old one still runs new games.
Its the same on ios/android as well.
You guys will get over it.

I think Unravel's one of the best looking current gen games and apparently it runs almost flawlessly at 1080p60 on Xbone.About what was expected.
Not going to get 4K native resolution games with current visual fidelity on that machine.
Does anyone know if 1440p has obvious scaling artifacts up to 4k? I really hate scaling artifacts, especially since 1080p scales evenly to 4k.
I'm specifically referring to the specs relayed in the GB article though. Are those a pretty decent bump? I'm sort of a lay person where chip architectures etc are concerned. I see that it's mainly the gpu that's being bumped up would that come with an appreciable bump in graphics if it was eventually tailored too?No guarantee its by October but if games are required to release supporting it at that point then it can't be too far afterwords. with 2 months of that for sure I would assume.
As to specs reflecting rumors hit and miss. Some of it has been accurate / close some stuff is clearly off from what has been reported here

You have to literally ignore what the article in the OP is describing to suffer from the fear you describe. Nothing you've said relates to the rumors.Main reason im worried about this is that I really don't want the iOS model to come to consoles. Seems like this could be a slippery slope. Your device not being able to run all the cool games after 3 years, having to always check to see if your system is supported by a game, that's not why I buy consoles. I'm glad the PS4K won't have exclusives, but I'm worried about what the future will bring. If this could happen, certainly exclusives could as well eventually.

This is a crazy thing to say when these specs are over 3X the power of the Xbox One GPU so you could do Xbox One level graphics at 4K with a few tricks
Yes, you can. A 720p xbox one game could be done at 30fps easily fairly easily with these specs.
Or big budget playstation exclusives like tlou 2, uncharted 4....etcThat doesn't work because you still don't get the advantages of an open platform.

LOL, no, you can't. Just, no. What?
399 = underpowered device again
An half-step upgrade when they could've launched a whole new gen in 2018/2019 and noone would've said anything.
I know they launched crappy consoles, but are we the ones to blame for that? Do we need to buy two consoles to get what we should've got in 2013 (1080p60fps)?
I hope this doesn't become the trend. I'm glad I didn't trust Sony...
How's the 2 GPUs working out for you?
I'm not afraid of the PS4K, I'm afraid of what will come after that. Basically I'm worried that this will change into the iOS model eventually, and by eventually I mean years in the future. I'm just worried about the direction consoles are going in is allYou have to literally ignore what the article in the OP is describing to suffer from the fear you describe. You know what I just realized? You know how in 2013 leading up to the launch of these systems we were inundated with FUD and back and forth about how many Ps each console could do and frame rate comparisons and how far you had to be from your tv for resolution to even matter...ect...? We're gonna do that all over again in like 6 months, aren't we?

...?How's the 2 GPUs working out for you?
The GPU in the PS4K is solid. You'd need something like a 290 or above to definitely beat it. So rather, it's pretty good if it comes out this year. The CPU is still crap though.![]()
Why not? If a game is 1080P on Xbox One with 1.31 tflops why wouldn't a game close to it's level be able to run 4K on a newer console with 4.19 tflops?
Thats pretty fucking amazing for $399 on top of it being a uhd player. I wonder how the nx compares to 3.7 tflops.
Sony did the supercomputer thing this gen?Sony really are the BEST... This is a SUPERCOMPUTER!

The overreactions from when this story very first broke from Kotaku have been crazy over the top. People saying its doomed for consoles and everyone is switching to PC etc.
So yeah been rough since the news broke, when really there is next to nothing negative about this. It gives people who want a bit better hardware with a bit better looking games something to pick up and everyone with a standard PS4 is still getting the EXACT SAME support they've always had.
But yeah, not the way a chunk of people are looking at this.
How's the 2 GPUs working out for you?
Oh wow, that's a pretty nothing upgrade. I guess everyone worried for nothing after all.
You need strong CPU for 60fps, much stronger than that hypothetical NEO CPU.CPU is mattering less and less these days as things move to utilizing compute and GPGPU power. Just look at all the i3 rigs out there today that can handle stuff like Quantum Break.
It's not the CPU doing the bulk of the heavy lifting anymore.
