Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

You know what I just realized? You know how in 2013 leading up to the launch of these systems we were inundated with FUD and back and forth about how many Ps each console could do and frame rate comparisons and how far you had to be from your tv for resolution to even matter...ect...? We're gonna do that all over again in like 6 months, aren't we?

You lost me at "inundated", bro. Lol I'm dumb

Why would you buy a console for content that doesn't exist yet?
I know it's dumb but that's what many of us do, with consoles, handhelds, even phones. We jump in early for the first taste of a new gen knowing that the real AAA stuff will eventually arrive and maximize it's full potential, which will justify out investment, kind of. Lots of people will do so with this upgrade too.

It's a 1440p to 4K is a 2:3 ratio, just like 720p to 1080, but it'll look better on a TV of equivalent size because of smaller pixels. The quality of internal upscaling for games should also be quite high compared to feeding a 720p signal to a 1080p TV.

Yeah, that's what I thought

Fuck yeah. My prayers are answered. Thus is even better than the 4k rumors which is just not possible for aaa games with these specs but man twice the gpu power mid gen means 1080p 60 fps games . Count me the Fuck in.

In terms of the GPU it is an absolutely substantial boost. This GPU is approx 2x the performance increase over the standard PS4 and almost 3x the performance increase of the Xbone. You will see clear cut graphical improvements on the Neo.

The CPU is the exact same but with about a 30% increase in performance due to a clock speed increase. This should help a bit with games that fluctuate framerate but don't expect some crazy performance boost there.

All in all its a nice upgrade, one that's for sure worth it for people that want games that look and perform a bit better but not a generational difference. A just nice, solid upgrade.

Well I was sold the minute we fist heard about it but I'm def sold now. Cpu isn't really a big concern for me because I don't Notice frame rate issues like most people. Not to say I don't prefer 60 cause I do but when it dips I'm usually cool with it. I like all the bells and whistles tho lol

actually looking forward to that.

the meltdowns, salt, and bans will make browsing this forum entertaining

Just swap the Metal Gear stuff for PS4K/NEO.

Well by default, you can't make your games too different so as to not work on PS4.

Devs will still keep PS4 as the base optimization effort and tack on some upgrades for NEO owners to make things easy on themselves.

Oh, yes, when I said "leave the PS4," I meant avoiding the platform ecosystem altogether because of a hypothetical increased burden. It was purely a thought based on exploring this line of thinking: "What if this made developers upset? What options do they have?"

That seems reasonable. There probably won't be too many games where the differences are "transformative" (as much as the specs would allow). I expect what you're suggesting.

Yeah, if you care more about image quality / Anti Aliasing / Draw Distance that kind of stuff thats where you will see the biggest difference with this. The main performance increase on this machine lies squarely in the GPU

You don't notice performance problems, but prefer 60FPS? Even at 60FPS you see dips that you're cool with...but you don't notice performance issues. My head hurts my guy lol

I can't wait for the OG ps4 fanboy cult to form.

*resist the new world, never upgrade*

*we are the originals, the console freedom fighters*

*console iterations are a betrayal, we must fight it*

Good question I'd also like to know will the xbox 1.5 be able to ditch the esram and still have ease of development and compatibility with xbox one, it'd be a shame if their still saddled with it

I mean Xbox One games run on PS4 and vice versa so I don't see why it shouldn't work if they went to GDDR5

1080p to 4k makes sense, 2k to 4k makes sense....such games will scale the best.

I don't think we will be seeing too many 1440p games, they should really not use that tbh, 720p scales well enough into 1440p as well, but who has time for that. I think the artefacts we will find at 1440p to 4k up-rez will be too much and the rendering footprint will be too much as a combo. It would mean some effects will have to be dialled back at 1440p coupled with the artefacts will look worse than 1080p - 4k upscale or 2k - 4k upscale.

Best looking games (graphically) 1080p - 4k upscale.
Very Nice looking games (graphically) 2k - 4k upscale.

Having a "budget" version and a "performance" version makes sense to me. If they price the old PS4 at a really good price they'll have a chance to sell a shit ton of PS4s in developing countries/less favorable eceonomies. There's a big market out there up for grabs.

I'm having trouble seeing the doomsday scenario here. Either this thing is a success and Sony has innovated the way we think about console generations or it's a failure, Sony takes their licks, and everything goes back to normal. Or something in the middle happens and both sides adapt to whatever that may be (in other words, the likely outcome). I just don't see this going in a direction that is disastrous for either Sony or the consumer.

This for sure. Provides a legit opportunity to further the marketshare, especially right before US holidays and Christmas.

(I will buy one day one. No shame.)

Im kind of confused.

Is this simply to play games at better/locked framerate? graphics are EXACTLY the same between both "versions" of the game besides that?
This is strange coming from you, uhmmm...you should be telling us.... after all....you are the Oracl..........e.;)

lol let me be more clear. Obviously 60fps is buttery smooth but when I'm into a game because of all the other things it's offering me I tend to pay less attention i the framerate is lower. Dips I actually hardly notice because they often happen in the middle of some heavy action and I'm a nervous wreck spamming some potions or swinging my sword or something. Make sense, Guy?

So...
Uncharted 4 is definitely getting a 60fps patch for this, huh? Seems like an easy way for ND to take advantage of the extra power without putting in much effort/time/resources/money.

Imagine U4 looking as good as it does now but running at 60fps. Yum!

uhhhhhhhhhhh

lets just say that would be a tad more difficult than you'd think.

Well...yea. The esram issue is likely larger than a patch, but something will have to be done. Perhaps a conversion to uwp or something? I'm no dev, just speculating. Your input, not NDA blocked, is appreciated

This will be good for Sony come fall.

But for developers, I can't help but feeling like this will be a 32x situation all over again. Devs not getting extra benefits from sony won't bother making NEO mode meaningful and crossplatform titles become more complicated to the point of abandonment.

We'll see I guess. Games are releasing more broken than ever these days, another SKU to test for probably won't change things that much, even if it is a headache for devs.

Seriously makes me wonder what happens when someone like Activision of EA says "we don't want to support this NEO mode, we don't have time, so we're not gonna, and if you really don't like it, we just won't come back next time around."
