Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

A nightmare for those of us that don't want to have to buy a new machine every two years to run Sony's 1st Party software at their highest quality.

I'd rather Sony 1st Party have extra hardware muscle to push the envelope. That way, when I'm ready for the upgrade, I can witness the awesome-ness and without limiting the developers.

Sucks that trading in your system mid gen is to become a thing but this at least sounds like a fair way to do it

Technically the PS2 started it with PS2 slim right? Only fitting Sony start with PS4K i guess lol.

Didn't think I would ever see you come around to accepting this.

I said when i first posted about it, that even though i had strong reservations and concerns, how they revealed it and how conciliatory they were to old PS4 owners would make or break the PS4K. If it was a completely new architecture and devs were free to make new exclusive games for the thing and things were not going to necessarily be compatible, and Sony had no answer for that or were dismissive, damn right i would be boycotting this thing to hell.

But just based on the info we've gotten, and i realize its just Giant Bomb with these rumors, they are really doing what they should to make this new test bed as painless as possible for current owners and new owners and have alleviated many of the concerns i had going into the initial prospects.

As long as they don't make it a regular thing, i see no reason to raise too much of a stink.

Finally this iq at 60fps? *Drools

Uh no? Especially not at 60fps.

At the end of the day it's an incremental upgrade. But I guess it's unreleased hardware so rampant wild dreams of magical new hardware pixie dust lets us all fantasize about running every game ever at 1080p60...

I think this is kinda shitty. I bought the PS4 with the promise that I was getting the most recent platform for running sony’s next gen games. Now they pretend to introduce a system with new specs that will not only split game development, but also breach the user base.

I thought I was buying game consoles, not damned mobile phones.

That GPU isn't even kind of an "incremental upgrade"

But yes there will be bigger boosts to graphics than framerates

you did, it's not, you did.

A nightmare for those of us that don't want to have to buy a new machine every two years to run Sony's 1st Party software at their highest quality.

You could always take the "not spend $400+ on a system I already own to play marginally better versions of things I can already get" route.

Keep seeing people saying things like and it doesn't make sense. What's the point of the system if they're not going to make it a main focus?

And we keep answering....i realized it, so should you. Its just an OPTIONAL thing for power oriented consumers. How many people have cried about the performance of games this gen? Not that i think its anyone's fault but the devs for not optimizing, but this will get the people who want a more stable or more high quality experience to have that, while still selling the lower cost original alternative as a just as viable option.

So you get even more buyers on top of double dippers.

I'm especially excited that all my previously bought games will transfer over to the new model. Ill have a lot of downloading to do unfortunately because I've gone almost entirely digital this gen. Now do I forgo having any games to play for a while and sell my PS4 while I can still get a decent price or wait it out and just sell it for that little bit extra to help purchase the new one nearer launch?

you could at least get the number of years right if you're going to keep repeating yourself[/QUOTE]

I was just trying to clear myself up for him, sorry, As for the years thing I'm a bit confused what you mean? I bought my PS4 at launch in 2014. October 2016 would be two years.

So you'll wait 5-6 years and forego great video games simply because you can't accept the fact that the console you have isn't the best model available? Really? How are you even getting through life with that attitude?

Edit:
LOL at the CeoKaz tweet.
You act like I can't occupy myself with other great video games on other platforms? Yea I think I can manage to have patience. And I'd rather sell my ps4 now and get the most money back before it becomes out dated. What attitude is that? Not wasting money on a product I find unsatisfactory? I guess I'll just have to live with that curse.
Lifespans might not be a thing anymore. If this ensures backwards compatibility with future iterations you can simply upgrade when your ready and play whatever you might have missed out on. Or just continue to play the games on your original ps4...
Thats exactly why I'm going to wait and see where this all goes. Too many unanswered questions. Picking up a system at the end of its lifespan and enjoying its library of games isn't the worst thing in the world.

that seems like an issue endemic to people who feel the need to buy everything
Its almost like every platform has games I think are worth playing?

Or you can suck it up and deal with it. Set your upgrade cycle to the budget and time-line you define. So what if it doesn't look the best, just upgrade at the iteration after this one.

True, no one should expect a generational difference in performance here.

But there will be noticeable improvements to visuals

That's true, if there wasn't an improvement Sony wouldn't have bothered. I'm just saying people are starting to let their expectations get out of control. I get the excitement of new hardware, but people's fantasies begin to form into their expectations and they'll be disappointed when the reality doesn't match the power spec upgrades on paper.

See PS2-to-PS3 transition, PS3-to-PS4 transition.

1) You didn't get promised anything.

2) If this info is true, the entire point is that it won't split the userbase.

I don't know, I guess being on GAF long enough you realize that some video game enthusiasts tend to hate everything that is remotely different from what they are used to.

Welp, this pretty much confirms it doesn't it? I do wonder if Sony will drop the PS4 price down to $199 at E3 (same with MS and Xbone). That would make it a really affordable and mass market console. I feel sorry for Nintendo though, seems like their NX platform will take a massive beating this year :(

Why does that even matter? Even if Sony moves to a yearly update cycle and joins the Apple style iterative model, they're not going to abandon the 40 million users of the OG PS4.
Some might feel slightly abandoned if Gran Turismo 7 turns out to run at 60fps on PS4Neo and 30fps on PS4. Not saying that this will happen but nothing seems certain in this industry anymore. Hopefully there will be some outrage and tough questions from the press whenever it's officially unveiled. Way too many around here seems to be accepting this like it's nothing.

And how are you burned? You can still play all ps4 games on your PS4.

PS4 launched in November 2013. The absolute earliest this will come out is October 2016.

And that is why it is a slap in the face to current PS4 owners.

Fine with it, as long as games don't run with 15 fps drops and sub 1080p on base mode. And since there's no incentive to optimize now there's a a NEO mode, I'm worried.

Please go for a stable 30 fps and 1080p at least on base mode, please, do it for us not in the 1%.

Be very nice if devs could draw HUDs/text in native 4K and still take advantage of hardware scaling for the rest of the image.

Also I hope this thing has some extra USB ports.

Keep seeing people saying things like and it doesn't make sense. What's the point of the system if they're not going to make it a main focus?

The new model is the "premium" model for those who want the best and can afford it.

The original PS4 will likely get a price drop and continue to sell gangbusters as the mass market model.

This way it ensures they are covering as much of the market as possible while increasing the userbase of their platform.

Maybe this is why we have seen no no footage any Sony 1st party exclusives scheduled for release this Fall? They are all being upgraded for the new PS4 and will shown re-revealed at E3.

How fun will that E3 thread be? "Everything shown during Sony press conference was on the PS4K, what does it look like on a normal PS4?"
