This isn't enough of an upgrade for me honestly. I was on the fence, but that shitty cpu pushed me right of. I'll save my money and get an NX.
I mean, there are other differences between the two.
First party games.
No driver issues.
You can trade in games.
There are only two specs to code for.
Unified online system (for the most part)
Less cheating
etc.
One of the few people that stepped out of line when the crazy pills were being handed out.
Nobody HAS to buy this. I don't understand the outrage.
It is worth noting how Sony has shown no updated content for Horizon, Dreams, etc. And also announced nothing else for Q4 this year. Their 1st party studio's likely have been working on launch versions for PS4.5 for a while and will have a blow out at E3.
Exciting times ahead
New, and it already seems like it's gonna stick, unfortunately, so may as well get used to it.
I'm not going to wait months to buy a game that may or may not get an updated for the new console.I was just about to buy another PS4 so I'm excited to wait.
I can't help but wonder though, could game sales be impacted by this? I wonder if people will say "I want to play <insert game title> but I'll just wait to buy it until I can play it on the Neo" rather than playing it on the PSPoor (love that) first? Similarly, would people be inclined to play games again if they had better framerates and whatnot? So many people who own both systems are going to become their own Eurogamer, Lol. This really is going to change things.

No dude. It is the other way around. CPUs follow the X86-64 ISA. It why I can potentially run executables compiled decades ago on a modern PC.First, Polaris refers only to GPU side. The GCN architecture improvements do not require any code changes to run games as it would on the CPU side. That's why Sony couldn't move to a ZEN architecture on the CPU as that would break compatibility. Second, if it were using GCN 1.2, that wouldn't explain how 2304 SPs could fit within the power and size limitations of a console. The largest GCN 1.2 mobile GPU AMD makes today is still only 32 CUs (2048 SPs) and it is still a 125W part. This new PS4 is said to be even smaller than the current one which would require the 14nm die shrink and AMD is only building 14nm Polaris parts. The much improved perf/watt is the only way a console can squeeze 2304 SPs onto an APU of equal or smaller size than the current PS4 and still fit within the TDP, noise, and size requirements of the PS4 form factor. It's just common sense.
Also, there is no 36 CU GCN 1.2 part in production but there is already a known 36CU Polaris based GPU in production and that is the Polaris 10. A happy coincidence? I think not.
For real though if Naughty Dog are able to make something look as insane visually as Uncharted 4 just imagine what Sony 1st party will be able to put out with 2x the GPU performance. Will be some real lookers coming up
If it were up to some of them we'd still be playing on cartridge based systems with no online connections.

it still has to look good on the old PS4 so it's not like they can go too crazy
And what if PS5Neo comes out 3 years later?What if the PS5 will be able to play PS4 games in Neo mode? How many people will hold out and see?
Do you think Nintendo has any ability to get something any better? Puma is the only thing better and is only a marginal upgrade.
Sony and MS are both waiting for Zen cores for PS5/XB2 which won't be ready in time anyway for any current gen revision.
Is it crazy to think that Sony(and possibly MS as well)knew this was the plan all along? As I sit here now, I'm certain that wasn't something they decided in the last 6 months-year.
I mean, If I have to get a shiny new console with a shitty cpu, I'd rather the one with the unique libraryOh the irony.

PSPoor started here. Don't let anyone else take credit.
But seriously no one else is worried that these demos will now be on the PS4K and not the PSPoor? Digital Foundry has its work cut out.
This is almost exactly what I said to my brother a short while ago when I linked this thread. He was surprised that rather than people being excited, they were mad and upset.
For some reason I read the article and said they wouldd require late September games to patch a neo mode, and thought "figures, FFXV releases at the beginning of September so it won't get patched as it's optional, I was looking forward to an even better FFXV"
The one time I'm so glad to be wrong about a game coming out later than I thought. I've waited 10 years. I think I'll wait a few more months if it means I'll get to play a better version of the game. (I'm still getting a copy day 1, it'll just be sitting there unopened LOL). Though the whole late september games needing a day 1 patch is making me hope it actually comes out early october.
NX and VR says hi.
Sure they can just look at the huge range you see on PC. The Division on lowest setting looks nowhere near Ultra.
I expect Sony 1st party to take full advantage of the hardware improvements. 3rd party not as much but their internal studios will push PS4.5 hard
There have been all manner of responses to this. Some I understand. It's a bummer to feel like you bought into an ecosystem only to see it supplanted by a superior product before you perceive you've gotten an acceptable amount of value out of it. This is the most dangerous backlash that console makers would face trying to move to an iterative model. Eventually you iterate to the point where you're dependent on each marginal improvement moving the needle predictably to meet sales targets, and I think Smartphone manufacturers are starting to show that the ride is bumpier than one would hope.
There are those who seem to feel like Sony has them by the balls and they have no choice but to pay up. That just amounts to someone playing a victim in order to justify their addiction to having the newest shit. It's a common behavior among compulsive people.
this popped up at the top of the page, seemed appropriate

Ps4 299 ps4k 399, people will still buy ps4 like hot cakes.
Standards change. Expecting an entire industry to be like it was in 1998 is silly.

Honestly just expect sony to push 60fps on PS4K, since they have been really pushing it in remasters.
Does Sony really fear NX? If Nintendo doesn't receive the same level of third party support...well....

1080p --> 4k
2 player co-op --> 4 player co-op
Unlocked 30/60fps --> locked 30/60fps
And they're charging the same price (more in Canada) for these marginal, negligible "upgrades" as the original PS4. Of course people are upset we're not getting a proper console upgrade.
I'm surprised at the lack of "Can it run Crysis?!!?" posts.
