Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Even though I haven't beaten it, I like
how they re-imagined Venom as this moon/asteroid instead of it being this planet.

i haven't played the game yet, but i heard some of the soundtrack.

when the original starfox soundtrack gonna get some love? yes, this game has a couple tunes of the corneria theme, but since adventures, i only heard starfox 64 rearranges and not from the snes one.

i mean, i really wanna hear some new remixes taken from This amazing soundtrack.

but anyway, i am pleased of the whole work. It's a good soundtrack overall.

Yeah, the original game has a pretty great soundtrack. I liked how ominous/oppressive it felt.

While we're on the subject of the voice actors, I came across this fantastic interview with all the original SF64 actors. Covers everything from how they had to interact with the Japanese team to how Mike West handled the reaction to his Smash 4 performance.

Most importantly, I can't believe the original Peppy's audition for SF643D was rejected! (And that he had to audition at all, lol)

Wait, Rick May got denied for SF643D?

Dude has been doing Soldier for the better part of a decade now, how could he mess up Peppy enough that they couldn't work around the aging of his voice?

Amazing how drastically my opinion of this game changed once the controls randomly clicked for me! Anyone on the fence about this game... go ahead and give this a purchase. Such a blast and somehow every level is replayable and fun. Landmaster controls so well in this game (finally) and the boss battles are beyond what I would have expected. Game is truly epic and possibly the best in the series.

People should stop complaining about motion controls and talk about the real worst thing about this game: target mode.

Just played about an hour of the game, the motion aiming was fine for me, (although I liked it before in stuff like the various Zelda games on 3DS and Wii U) but target mode is a real bitch. Last thing I did in my play session was that Landmaster boss fight against the giant worm... ugh. Need to look at the gamepad to hit the weak points correctly, but then you need to maneuver the tank and the orientation is totally different than the camera due to target mode. Just a mess.

I assume Mr Train Monkey dictator was voiced by the same person (since Leon has the same actor), by why would they get rid of his southern accent?

Come to think of it, Wolf lost his southern accent from Brawl also.

They hate southern accents I guess.

This has nothing to do with my expectations nor "get gud". If you can't put together a cohesive thought without projecting, i would suggest to refrain from posting anything. What an idiotic post.Next time try asking questions instead of filling your own blanks.

Claiming someone is projecting doesn't obscure the fact you said an aspect that is factually in the game doesn't belong. It belongs because that's how the game was made. This is Star Fox, it's just not what you would have made had it been your creation.

Anyhow you sound angry, you should play something you like that makes you feel in control 😍

I was so disappointed when I heard that. Secret best voice in SF64.

I guess they went a different direction since the character changed roles.

Just did the first corneria level, got silver medal on my first try. The regular arwing bits basically control exactly like old Star Fox, which is great. Don't even need motion for them. The dual screen stuff during all range mode is disorienting at first but I got used to it by the end of the first boss
Same here.

Same for me. I couldn't get past the controls in Uprising but boy howdy is Zero another story. Great experience all around. Finding the medals and exploring the stages is very addictive.

I knew this was my kind of game on that rockets into the wormhole stage. Pulling up under one of the third stage rockets, aiming up and just blasting away at the ring of weak points which led to getting completely wrecked when the rocket detonated. Left with a sliver of health, I started to scour the stage for rings, finally finding one hidden in the jetstream of Great Fox, only to have another rocket get too close to the warp ending the stage with Great Fox being sacrificed.
Good times.

and MAN, do you lose your center fucking fast. I don't get why the game doesn't use the Sensor Bar for some re-calibration. It's such a big flaw with Gyro controls.

This is my only real genuine problem with Zero. It was such an annoyance earlier on, by the end I was habitually slapping down on the left thumbstick before every encounter and between patterns. You're totally right, though. This is something that shouldn't be happening as freqeuntly.

I didn't even realize it was him until I looked closer at the portrait.

I knew he was in the game, but I was waiting for "Come a little closer" and "You're very lucky" and didn't get that at all, instead he just has some random generic voice.

I'm struggling way too much with Andross.
A lot of people will have issues with the fight, but I managed to figure out what I was doing wrong (and it wasn't the motion controls)
If I do it again I can probably beat it without needing any rings vs dying 5 times in a row without knowing how.
When there are lasers fly outward instead of any other direction.
If he tries to slam or punch you, you can move left or right while shooting his hand and dodge the attack (I was only barrel rolling at the last second which doesn't work)

Finished my first acarde mode run:

Neat that they mark all possible 19 paths for you, though it's kind of a bummer that it always ends with the same 3 stages.

This is where i think even some customization for the controls would have helped

Absolutely. Speaking of customization, where are the audio sliders and such? A lot of high profile Nintendo games seem to lack them but man, this is one where I would love to crank up the music and drop the sound effects a pinch for subsequent playthroughs...

Such is life, I guess.

Is there a bad-ass level like Area 6 in this game? Where you just plow through wave after wave of a huge enemy fleet?

Sort of.

I was kind of disappointed in the asteroid level, but it's basically because I love the SF64 so much on a moment to moment basis. It just felt more bland this time.

Right the music is really good but I can't really hear it.

I dunno guys, I had no problem with the waggle roll in Donkey Kong (and in fact preferred to use that in Tropical Freeze), Kid Icarus Uprising was fun and easy enough to adjust to, and for all its problems Skyward Sword never gave me any issues with motion control including the Tadtones---but I'm really not sold on this, it's not too unruly really but the game itself is kind of lacking. Played up to the level with the first Wolf fight and while it was fun enough, I was kind of bored. The Gyrowing level totally put me to sleep too, hated that.

The dog fights are so great. They work really well with the second screen and gyro aiming IMO. More so than any other part.

Really enjoying replaying old levels after finishing it.

Should I beat the game before I worry about alternate paths? Noticed that
portals appeared on some stages
about halfway through the game. Are they connected?

There's too much All-Range Mode stuff and not enough linear blasting guys levels, which makes the game feel really slow at times. And I think every boss is in All-Range Mode, too, so that doesn't help the pacing.

After playing some more i find this to be objectivly the best in the series, beating the original.

Its a special game, that's for sure.

Wolf: Brawl voice
Pepper: 64 Voice
Pigma: 64 Voice
ROB: 64 Voice (same actor as Pepper)
Andrew: Mike West now voices him
Are you sure you have that right? I thought Peppy was played by Rick May, whom' I've heard in a previous SF thread saying he retired, but occassionally returns to voice the Soldier from Team Fortress 2.

Edit: As more music comes in, the Tutorial medley...If there's one thing that definitely stands out, the compositions in this game are stellar.

Use motion-controls when shooting option, makes it so much easier to shoot and move without re-calibrating all the time.

After watching GameExplain's impressions, I noticed one of the reviews was mentioning how the music was a step back from Star Fox Assault's in that it wasn't orchestrated.

I find it odd though, since some of Assault's renditions of certain tracks, while nice on their own, I found particularly too slow, like Star Wolf's theme. And although the orchestra lends itself to a more majestic backdrop, I always thought Star Fox was more about mercs with tech that lends itself more to a techno backdrop. SNES Star Fox and Star Fox 2 kind of gave that 80's/90's sci-fi anime atmosphere, and I feel SFZ's soundtrack feels like the perfect merger between the SNES era and 64-bit era SFs.

Because it can't "see" the sensor bar--there's no camera on the back (they really should have sacrificed the front facing camera for a backfacing IR one, like the Wii Remote)

So, I just started playing this today, and I have to say, it's the most frustrating Nintendo game I've played since I can't remember. Maybe it's me, but I just can't get used to the controls, and they make what would otherwise be a fun game nearly unplayable. It makes me sad, because I was really looking forward to this...

If you haven't read the entire thread yet...

Use the alternate control scheme. It makes it so that gyro only activates when you press ZR.

As someone who believes that games can improve when alternative control methods "click" (for example, Skyward Sword), I will say that it feels like the game will grow on me over time.

It definitely takes an adjustment.

That said, I already love the characters. Just hearing Peppy speak warns my heart.

Strafing runs takes some time to get used to, but once you get a feel for your ship and its relative position, things get a whole lot simpler and it becomes a matter of trying to pump enemies and weakspots with some well directed precision laser fire.

Fortuna boss is one such example. Oh boy...

Tried out the charged shot technique. Feels pretty good to pull off. If you fully upgrade your lasers you can shoot two at the same time as long as you time it to the last shot

Holy crap. Thanks for the tip. I'll try this later. This might just change everything.
I initially thought this would be better but it's not. Being able to freely aim while you're moving independently will prove valuable as you progress. It does take some getting used to. It started to slowly make sense to me since it was definitely a new coordination thing.

Haven't tried Venom again today but I've been unlocking alternate stages, working on the controls, collecting medals. I've had a lot of fun with it today; I think I'm getting somewhat better.

It is weird how off your aim can be from where it seems to be on the TV but I've been doing a lot of charged shots now per the advice on the hit counter in this thread.

Crazy that they got these guys back.

Pepper's VA's performance sounds nearly identical to his N64 performance, I guess the bass helps. Pigma's VA was the narrator in Kirby Epic Yarn, so it makes sense that Nintendo kept in touch. I think Lyssa Brown does better as Slippy here than 64, though Peppy is a bit of a downgrade from 64, but still far better than Seavor.

Yeah, shame about Peppy since everyone else is pretty good. I think the anime VAs are different, right?
Slippy's the best he's ever been there

Aww, I liked Seavor because it sounded like he at least tried to sound like Peppy--I didn't get that from the new one at all (not that he's bad otherwiise)

Same boat for me. It just never felt like a coherent package whereas I had no issues with all the games you listed.

The short itself doesn't say, but behindthevoiceactors does list the game's cast for the anime (the site's not 100% accurate, but I'd say that's about right.)

Hm, I felt Seavor did too much of an old man thing and dropped the texan angle, which didn't return much in Assault either. At least the Jaz Adams voice tries to mix the texan in with the old guy voice.

Just finished my first play through (still a bunch of paths and areas to unlock) and wow...what a wild ride.

I really enjoyed it. Just incredible from beginning to end. I may no return to the Gyrocopter stage often, but the rest is superb. What a treat. Easily my GOTY so far.
