Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

god damn it. i just can't find the 3 badges for the gold medal in Fortuna.

I can find 2. one for helping Kat and one in the trap plant. can someone just give me a hint? Is the badge for helping Kat the first one to get?

edit: Ok. finally got it

Blown away by how much variation there is in the first level. You can take the normal path or the chicken walker path, but the chicken walker path leads back to the normal path's bossfight, unless you have activated the teleporters from later in the game, in which case you find a teleporter to take you to a special boss fight. Crazy.

Also gold-medaled Corneria on only my second try, so I take back any complaints about the gyro controls. Once you get used to it, it is easy peasy shooting down enemies. I just wish some boss fights didn't have that stupid as shit cinematic camera angle where you kind of circle around them.

Just going to say this: those Walker controls. Holy moly, how do you mess up something like that? All I want to do is turn around, not continually do flips. No to mention aiming with the Gamepad is near-awful. I have no issue with the controls as an Arwing, but it's a completely different story as the Walker. Haven't read many reviews, but I'm curious to see what the general consensus is on Mecha-Chicken.
The trick is that the R stick changes function depending on whether or not you're locked on - you always flip if you're holding ZL.

So, what gives. We'Ve been told by various people that PG only did minor art support or whatever. But then what are a handful of Bayonetta 2 game designers doing right in the beginning of the game design section of the credits? :) Only two EAD designers show up under planning again after the cinematic credits during the black background part.

The Gigarila
is just one of the most stupid boss fight like ever.

Just apply what you learned. I loved that fight. It's tough to get a handle on things but I absolutely loved it. You can hide in that building near where you enter the area, btw. :)

Thought I had it, but then I ended up dying and starting with no laser upgrade meaning it takes much longer and requires much dodging

Blergh

Do a barrel roll. No seriously. Always be evading while in Walker mode. And use the transformation too. You should only get it when he does the tractor beam attack.

This game along with Splatoon demonstrates that gyro works well in a fast-paced shooter. It is instantaneous, accurate and intuitive. On the downside, Star Fox Zero has shown us that a non-fixed camera and an aiming reticle from the perspective of an object and not from the person playing create complications.

I would love to see Kid Icarus Uprising, After Burner and Panzer Dragoon made with fixed-camera gyro controls (sans the the 3rd person perspective on the gamepad which adds an unnecessary 3rd dimension to aiming).

The Gigarila

Do a barrel roll... I'm serious - I struggled with it too, but once I started to extensively barrel-roll while he's shooting projectiles, he was really easy, way more easy than gigantic bosses.

Have you played Star Fox Command? Remember how you barrel-rolled, like, half the total play time? It's the same with Gigarilla. Flick the hell out of the right stick.

Barrel rolling never really protected me from some of the attacks.

I got it beat though.

Ithought I had mastered the controls until I hit Andross haha

Pepper's VA's performance sounds nearly identical to his N64 performance, I guess the bass helps. Pigma's VA was the narrator in Kirby Epic Yarn, so it makes sense that Nintendo kept in touch. I think Lyssa Brown does better as Slippy here than 64, though Peppy is a bit of a downgrade from 64, but still far better than Seavor.

Yea, with Pepper when I first played I thought "wow, the guy from 643D stepped up his impression, this is spot on" and then I read it was the original 64 guy and I got happy.

Although, due to the poor audio quality of the N64, in my mind, Pepper has a very slight lisp in my head, because he'd say "shhtar foxsh" because of the quality of the audio.

I meant multiple barrel rolls, specifically. That's what kept me in one piece. :) But congrats on beating it your own way!

The final boss is even more stupid. The controls do deserve whatever amount of flak it gets and forcing the two screen attention grabbing controls into the very last boss fight is plain insulting.

I know that this is completely off topic, but figured I'd ask here since someone may have just done this. If I purchase a download code from Amazon, would I get gold coins for my Nintendo when I redeem it? Or does only purchases through the eshop qualify you for them.

Crazy that they got these guys back.

From what I understand, they even brought back "Corneria, fourth planet of the Lylat system" narrator guy from Star Fox 64 to Star Fox Guard.

My friends are purchasing DL codes from Yandex.Money and they count as eShop purchases. You even get the same amount of coins as from buying on eShop, even if DL code was discounted.

I would have thought you'd get the coins, I know I got coins for redeeming my Guard code that I bought from the Nintendo store. (I'm in Europe so it didn't come with the main game as standard).

If you look directly down in while controlling the Direct-i you can see it's little claw hands <3.

I just beat it. I was expecting Andross to be much harder than he was based on what's been posted but I managed to take him out first try. Aquarosa was much tougher IMO.

Wait a second, you can play as fucking Peppy in this game? So Slippy has a whole game to himself, you can play as Peppy for a stupid barrel roll mission, you're stuck with Fox in the main campaign, but Falco gets squat?

Seriously, fuck this game.

Falco is in Smash Bros. I think Falco won out here.

Sounds like it should work then. Thanks!

Personally, I prefer the air.

Seriously though, you have a good point. Just wish this game let you play as Falco in the campaign if you had his amiibo, or at least had a multiplayer mode where you could play as anyone. He's one of my fave characters in gaming, and the only thing I really love about Star Fox.

all range mode with the 2nd screen and the 3d audio is really something special imo.
Never experienced so much fun during space shooting.

I'm done with my Wii U after I beat this stupid boss. This game however good it is, is the epitome of Nintendo's stubborness refusing to adapt to modern standards, the forced awkward controls, the lack of options (all dialogue forced through the gamepad? Seriously?). If you still think NX is going to change anything, Star Fox Zero is the perfect counter argument.

After the third time playing Titania (finally got the gold medal for destroying every living creature on this planet) I made that level's boss my personal bitch. The first time it totally raped me, but after the game's controls finally clicked for me, it was easy peasy.

Even Aquarosa ain't that difficult anymore. I guess most of the players do the mistake by looking to often on the gamepad. >95% of the time, you don't have to do that by pressing MINUS. However, the motion controls are crucial in that fight, since flying and shooting in the same direction (ergo towards the canons) is deadly.

Star Wolf is another story. I very rarely use the charge shot or the ego-perspective. Instead I wreck them with my laser shots in third person (bombs are also very useful if two or more of Star Wolf are close by). If one of Star Wolf is leaving the screen (right or left) I simply move the gamepad to the side and keep shooting. I DO not see them (since I don't look at the gamepad or press minus at that moment) but I KNOW where they are. It feels sooo good. The same could be done in Starfox 64, where hitting enemies outside the screen was also very crucial.

Sometimes I pause the game by pressing + instead of -. Couldn't they use another button?

In any case, I love the game and love the controls (finally). And yes, I don't want another control method anymore.

Edit: Some Medals are very weird tho.

Deactivate a searchlight and then reactivate it to let a coin appear and then deactivate it again to get the coin savely. lolwut.

While I can't comment on SFZ, I fail to see how it relates to MX. Even if the game had been universally praised, using it to determine NX's success or lack thereof, would be equally baseless.

Who came up with the mission accomplished objective om Area 3? All of the others made sense but I had to look that one up. It's so dumb.

While it's not super obvious, it's essentially the same idea as on Corneria and Titania - "use the ability you didn't have on your first playthrough."

You have to specify the mission name though since there are different routes.

I think he meant the original one. Bonus missions don't have Mission Accomplished (and Area 3's bonus mission is called Satellite Mission 1).

Slippy is Miyamoto's favourite, I think he said so in E3 last year.

Mission accomplished only applies to the main mission in each area.

You can do the Corneria mission on your first playthrough. If you fly into the hanger it transforms you into the walker.

I know, and that's what I've done so I could have Walker functionality enabled from the get-go. I was talking about the exit to Aquarosa and Titania's exit to Salvadora.

(There really should be an alternative exit from Area 3... the fact that you enter the portal on Walker only to be transported to Zoness in Gyrowing is stupid. The whole teleportation to Zoness bit was kind of dumb... why did they need a Gigarilla there, and wouldn't it land right into a sea?)

Miyamoto in an interview said that Platinum designed a number of stages.

Wait, hold on... you have to let Peppy get shot down in Sector Beta to get to Titania? I got Wolf before he managed to do, well, anything. Peppy was the wingman with the least amount of damage after the mission, even.

I just got this game and wow the controls. I'm getting the hang of it in the opening training course. Then I start the main game and mess it all up somehow. I was under the impression one of the left buttons was to shoot because ZR is to use motion controls. But basically motion controls can be turned off, except in shooting where it will always wobble and be imprecise because you thought you weren't using motion controls.
I died in Phase 2 lol. I felt like I needed 3 hands to play.

The final boss makes it very obvious when you should look at each screen. Like it's the most obvious it's been in the entire game because the whole fight is so cleanly divided.

He is addressing Nintendo's game design philosophy and saying that Nintendo conforming to the gimmicks of the Wii U at this stage of its cycle is a good hint that they will also conform design around whatever NX is sure to bring to the table. I agree with him. The controls here were not designed around practicality but, rather, making use of the tablet, thus rendering it as an end and not a means.

SFZ would be a perfect launch title showcasing what the gamepad can do, it might not be optimal but the potential is there, but right now at the end of Wii U's life what they put out with the controls is just disappoint at the least, if not ignorant.

Yeah, just like you had to let him shoot down Slippy to reach Titania in Star Fox 64.

Peppy's health doesn't matter. If you take too long to beat Wolf he shoots down Peppy in a cutscene.

I know that. That's why I always thought it bizarre that some were claiming/implying they didn't. And the credits now prove that.

Star Fox Guard has its own OT here btw: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1210394
This game screams EAD, from presentation to motion controls, PG assisted in its development but i would be cautious in calling SFZ a "platinum" game.
Now, what they learned here could be used better in future games, Star Fox or not.

Nah you just need to git gud ;D

Mini guide for the last boss:

Use the chicken mode while you fight Andross.

Phase 1 (the boss has 2 hands): he has only 3 moves. When he puts his hand over you (attack 1) press A and go behind him, without shooting, you have to go away asap. When you are behind him press A to retourn a chicken and than ZL to turn the camera vs the boss. When he rise one hand to charge his attack (attack 2) shoot for a couple seconds the red stuff on the hand and than evade his assault (same way as attack 1). For the last attack, when the boss puts both his hands around you, choose 1 hand and shoot it for a while, than when he puts it closer to you evade the same way you did for attack 1,2. Continue this way until you destroy 1 hand. Now you have to go outside, dodge the laser beams (it's not that hard) and than come back to Andross for Phase 2.

Phase 2 (boss with 1 hand): at the start he's probably going to use attack 1 a few times (it's the most dangerous) so prepare to dodge it fast. Than fight like phase 1. The only difference is that he have a new attack: he rise his hand to cast a tractor beam. To save your ass you have just to keep shooting his red point into his hand (use the 1st person view). You will destroy his 2nd hand and than you have to go outside again... laser beams, and than back to the boss.

Phase 3: here Andross changes his patterns. He will try to eat you (dodge running away), or he will cast a laser beam from his mouth (to dodge it jump while in chicken mode). At some point he will try to hit you spitting debris: now you have to transform into the space ship to fly in circles around him (follow the form of the room) to dodge the debris. While you fly, in one direction, use the gamepad to shoot Andross in the face. At some point he will be stunned, so just go behind him and shoot the red part that's now exposed on his head.

The boss hits hard, but it's not that difficult when you learn his patterns.
