This mentality is the problem in my opinion. Even if you don't have an issue with things being removed due to sexuality it's the principle of them being removed plus the dangerous precedent it sets.
When Nintendo removes actual content from a game for one region, nobody wins. It's bad for the game, bad for fans and bad for the industry. Who's to say this won't eventually lead to Nintendo removing bigger features from games because they think they're too complex for another region to understand? Then will it become a problem for you?
No reason to change her, she's an adult and she's not put in any questionable scenarios by NoA standards (which are rather apparent over multiple games). The issues are always around teens and exploitative scenarios with women.
It does change how much of it we get to play though. It's an inferior product and that's all there is to it. It will still be good enough for most people but that doesn't mean that everybody should rollover and support it blindly.

I think it's an objectively superior product in regards to the base game. Titillation for the sake of it can needlessly detract from a core experience in some cases.

Not going to get involved with what I'm sure is a very intellectually enlightened debate. Just want to say that I'm normally not bothered by censorship in games but Nintendo's (or Atlus?) handling of this game's localization has made me go from day 1 hyped to probably waiting for a deep discount.
Changing swimsuits for ostensibly underage girls is one thing but deciding to not bring over actual DLC content is baffling. DLC is optional and if someone decides they don't want it for reasons XYZ, they don't need to buy it to still enjoy the main game.
I'm sure my sentiment has been stated by a bunch of others already but just had to get that off my chest. I'm sure the game will still be fun and overall totally fine, but the whole thing just sort of leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'm not willing to give Nintendo $60 for that.
There is a model viewer in the game but the implementation is such that the character face seems to be following the camera with a default expression
Now imagine charactes like Sakura or Elise in that mode and is no wonder they decided to only keep the towels since everyone can wear all the available accesories.
At least for Xenoblade X they changed Lin model to make her wear more clothes even in the most skimpy outfits.

I have no first hand experience since the game isn't out for me yet and I've been avoiding most stuff since the NA release to not spoil myself too hard, but this does mean they removed those swimsuits for general use by all characters, not just the ones you are citing, right? Not an XCX situation in which only one character is affected (even though that game censored an outfit for men and mature women as well)?
I don't think the model viewer was robust enough to allow some but not others.
They'd have had to either strike it from every character (which they did) or alter the models of the questionable characters like Elise and Sakura (the XCX) approach but I don't know how applicable that is with this engine.

Yeah, could just be a technical thing, but why did they alter the Fundoshi outfit in XCX for everyone, an engine which obviously has that capability? For comparison:

In Xenoblade X (and Xenoblade Chronicles for that matter) there is a model viewer which is pretty standard feature so they only modified Lin body model to give her more clothes in certain outfits since during the game none of her scenes have weird camera angles sexualizing her.
Now, in Fire Emblem: Fates the model viewer is very voyeuristic in nature since the character follows the camera with their head so maybe they thought that the mode could be labeled as a "oogle simulator" (in fact I remmember people pressed about it during the My Castle presentation) so they took the route of removing the skimpy clothes for all the characters and only leave the towels, becase they are kind of needed for the Bath House events, instead of only change the costumes or the models of the underage characters.

I was just reading through the thread but I decided to post since you perfectly described how I feel about this stuff.
Now, content being removed has never been enough to prevent me from buying and enjoying a game, but it still really bothers me.
Even if I didn't care about the content itself I still wouldn't like it being removed, my own opinion of the content doesn't change that the problem is the removal itself.
I'm not the only person interested in this or other games and mine is not the only opinion regarding the games' content, so I'm not inclined to ignore a problem just because it doesn't affect me personally.
First, it affects other people who are as important as I am, second, as long as a problem exists the possibility of me being effected by it also exists.

It's bollocks, especially because it lopsided the fanservice mostly towards the female kind since they retained the Playboy Bunny outfit, which reveals just as much buttox but can't be equipped by males. And keeping that outfit makes this change even weirder because obviously it wasn't due to the revealing nature of it.

accessory shop, go to the underwear section, they are wearing the default underwear from the start
nohr's were more modern looking, kinda the same, but the end result is you can still do the thing nintendo didn't want people to do
It's not really weird, but let's put that aside for a minute; The character looking at the camera makes it less voyeuristic, in my opinion, because it means they are acknowledging someone looking at them. I don't mean to deny that any model viewer can inherently be interpreted as voyeuristic in nature, but having the character address the viewer like that directly contradicts the aspect of secrecy that defines voyeurism in the first place.
And to be frank, we're overthinking this because it's an entertainment product and those people are designed to be visually pleasing to the consumer. Having a mode to display them isn't really an odd thing and the invasion of another person's privacy that makes actual voyeurism disgusting isn't an issue in regards to people who don't exist and have no privacy because they aren't a person.

maybe this can finally be the last straw in motivating you to learn japane--what's that? you're going to do nothing except bitch on the internet and pass blame? ok

I already know how to actually, but i won't purchase another wii u specifically because nintendo can't provide a region free console in this day and age.

Not to mention the fact that dismissing the discussion of the narrative surrounding the original, the implications of the alterations and the localisation practices from Nintendo as of late as "bitching" is incredibly reductive and providing a "solution" that doesn't address the problem discussed is useless. Grade A drive-by shitposting.

I feel like they should have tied the giving a character an accessory event to the shop itself, so you'll hear reactions to whatever accessory you make them wear. It would put more on the, you brought the character hear and want to see them do a pose with the new shiny faceless mask you had them wear.
accessory shop, change, pick a character, underwear section, if they aren't equipped with the bath towel they will be wearing the default underwear, feel free to pose them from there

It would be commendable if it wasn't such a waste of time and money. It's like they said to themselves that can't leave the audio as is because these niche anime/rpg fans will know but then go out of the way to turn off that same audience at every other turn.
oh wow, pandering to the small subset of gamers who still want this game and can understand japanese so their enjoyment won't be hampered by pointless edits

No logic behind it at all, and as you said, it would be insulting to the people who can understand the language, as they'd notice the different in the japanese va to the english text.
It seems that there is a theme with most of the games that "suffer" this kind of changes: In Bravely Default there was that Red Mage questline in which one of the characters wears a Bikini and the antagonist is a serial rapist and murderer
and thats without taking into account characters like the Sage Yuliana and Ringabell who are very interested in the very youngs Agnes and Edea
, the problematic scene in Fatal Frame in which a very young female character is forced to model in skimpy underwear againsy her will and now this game that seems to have something similar with a stalker.
Maybe they dont really like very young girls being exploited sexually, unlike ATLUS or Xseed, because they have a plethora of other games with characters in skimpier default clothes and that seems OK for them.
It should be obvious at this point this is the main reason for the changes. Just because Atlus likes having underage girls in sexualized positions doesn't mean Nintendo feels the same, especially in the west where this is not acceptable by the majority of the population and you're known for being a family friendly company.
Maybe we would see less localization changes like this if Japan actually bothered to designed characters that look like actual adults for once if you're going to sexualize them.

That's pretty neat. The dissonance between the JP VA and text bugged the hell out of me in Tales of Hearts R so I'm glad it won't be an issue here if this is anything to go by.

It feels super sketch. Like, they're going incredibly out of their way to erase the things they don't approve of from the Japanese version. I don't think this has ever happened before.
This shows that they know that there's a Japanese-speaking demographic that'll be picking up the game, and they're probably already familiar with the game and its content. Yet they went ahead with all of these changes that said demographic would be aware of, and went as far as to get the Japanese VAs to redub scenes. I don't understand who they're trying to appease at this point. The fact that they're going this far makes me kind of uncomfortable.

Yeah, I went from hype Day 1 purchase to "ehhh.. Maybe a sale or something." It's a huge disappointment to me that they're going so far to change things in a very niche game. I guess I'll more likely be getting Star Ocean instead, which I was going to wait on initially. I doubt they'll reverse any of their decisions.
You know, getting the VAs to re-record any dialogue they altered in the localization is kinda commendable for the level of commitment that's involved. Between that and creating new images for whatever gravure stuff they had in the dungeon, you can't say they're half-assing it.
