Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

I've tried it every way; a full 5.1 system, a soundbar, the TV speakers. It always sounds like shit. Headphones are arguably the best result, but unfortunately because the game routes a bunch of sound through the gamepad with NO OPTION for anything else (because, again, there are no options whatsoever basically) you lose a bunch of audio by using headphones.

It's a mess. Honestly, if you can pick out something like, say, the Jingle that plays when Katt or Bill appear, you must have the hearing of a dog or something, because it's just a muddy mess in the mix for me no matter the situation.
I'm tempted to record what I'm hearing with a recorder or something, because I can pick out the jingles just fine. (As well as the "meow!" at the end of Katt's appearance.)

But I believe you. I just wonder if there's something with your setup vs. mine.

I hope janky polygon andross is replaced with
metal form andross
in Smash 5.

Headphones are arguably the best result, but unfortunately because the game routes a bunch of sound through the gamepad with NO OPTION for anything else (because, again, there are no options whatsoever basically) you lose a bunch of audio by using headphones, and the sound level the gamepad puts out is way, way lower (and for me at least, less satisfying) than what I can get from mixing the TV/console out to the headphones.

It's a mess. Honestly, if you can pick out something like, say, the Jingle that plays when Katt or Bill appear, you must have the hearing of a dog or something, because it's just a muddy mess in the mix for me no matter the situation. I can deal with games not having great native sound mixes because situations differ wildly not just in setup, but in game as well. But to not put in any options (options, it should be noted, that even SF64 had) is ludicrous.

Use the gamepad's headphone jack, the game routes all sound to it when plugged in and mutes all other output. It has a maximum volume, but it's the best mix so w/e.

I would make a post about it on miiverse or something, they're more likely to process feedback from there.

We need to put together a miiverse message lobbying for some sound options (that were present in Star Fox 64 no less) for us all to "yeah"

I would do it but realistically can't manage it due to time constraints, but there must be someone who can...please

So i just beat the game and,
i thought it was fine, but nothing special. The controls feels so good when they are being used properly. Like in the fight against Star Wolf, which was probably the biggest highlight, but other than that most encounter just fell flat. Its like a 10/10 control scheme trapped inside a 6 or 7/10 game. Also your team felt kind of nonresistant, other that the little F,P,or S flying around with the occasional "help" call out. Wish they got who ever wrote the Wonderful 101 story to do this, that was "Saturday morning cartoon" story done perfect, but i really didn't expect much of a story so that's fine. Might give arcade mode a shot.

A little help on Andross........
how do I stop him from grabbing me/crushing and slamming me? That parts been killing me every time.

grab: bomb or shoot grab hand very quickly and precisely
crush: DO A BARREL ROLL (srsly) - just get out of the way, don't wait too long (alternatively try transforming and flying away)

If been trying the first two and getting owned every time. I'll try to dodge it next time.......I have had success in general by transforming and flying away but during that attack I get grabbed in plane mode as well.

Where are the silver coins in the alternate Zoness stage?
There's not much of a secret to them, just kinda hidden. There aren't any in the first hallway though.

One you may miss is the one in the high up secret hallway on the left side of the "main" room. There's nothing there in gyrowing mode so most people ignore it.

Very apt OT title, since this thing seems content with being TFA of this series. The original three games 1/2/64 being the OT all fans of the franchise enjoy, and Adventures/Assault/Command being the prequel trilogy that has many detractors but some passionate fans.

But this should've been more. Nintendo EPD and Platinum games together, and all they can do is another Star Fox 64 retread? Another game of Star Wolf dog fights, of repeating the same lines from 64, of using the same UI elements, the same (spoilers if you''ve stumbled into this thread and yet never played SF64)
James McCloud ghost saving Fox from Andross and Fox escapes and someone says "Whats wrong, Fox?" and Fox shakes his head and says, "Nothing. Nothing's wrong..."
, and then Gen Pepper says "this is a hefty bill, but its worth it!" and stamps the big check at the end.

Like TFA, its fine. Good, even. A 7/10 game, and I use the full scale(SF64 being an 8/10 and Sin and Punishment Star Successor being a 9/10 for comparison). The controls aren't really that bad once you get used to it. But this feel like a big missed opportunity, creatively. It feels like something that only existed because Miyamoto really wanted to use this silly control scheme to do all your favorite things from the Star Fox games people liked all over again, but with less memorable voice acting or music(even the Star Wolf remix is weak here, its all Disney World theme park forgettable bombastic bullshit).

I imagine, between the game's mixed critical reception and the sales death of the Wii U, this game won't perform very well and the series will go back on ice again. But if the only thing they can do with this series is reheat and remix the greatest hits with some boring Gyrocopter/Chicken Walker/escort mission crud thrown in, then maybe its time for the series to go to bed.

I don't think you can escape the grab move any other way than to stun him (= like by getting enough hits on the hand). All the other non-tractor beam attacks can be simply evaded, though.

Star Fox Zero is a dumpster game for people who want to have a garbage time, and it belongs in the toilet.

At least rent it. I was a huge skeptic going in, and had like no hype, but WHOA. This game is quickly becoming one of my favorite Nintendo titles. Like, ever.

I feel like this is one of the most divisive Nintendo games in a while.

Agreed, should it be drawn or message in text or both?

Well I did a single sitting arcade run earlier for that 64 feel, it's obviously not quite as good due to the way alt paths are handled but I'm glad it's here. I didn't even sniff a landmaster in this particular run and I still had to sit through Pepper exposition before Venom which seems odd for a mode like this, but otherwise it confirmed that Zero at least takes the somewhat damning with faint praise position of my second fave Starfox title.

It actually feels really damn good to play (blue charge shot + extra points for shooting crashing ships= satisfaction) with the more troublesome situations from my first run feeling a hell of a lot more smoother when you "get it" (see cinematic camera bosses for example). It's just a shame that it feels like half a package on the whole, it's presented like a bigger and better SF64 remix and when it's on top form it's absolutely that.
Unfortunately there's just not enough of it even for the score attack angle since it's all a bit hodgepodge in execution. A great base for the series to carry on with lurks in here, I just doubt we'll ever get to see that, especially with how damning the more negative reviews are.

At least All Range Mode stuff is a lot better in this one, takes the sting out of them popping up as frequently as they do, I just needed moooore, more on rails stages, more bosses, more quotable lines, more walker!

Completing my second run through of arcade mode I'm a little disappointed that while it keeps track of all your scores for each route it only records the fastest time. Would be nice to have all the times listed so that way it'd be easier to check the best routes for speedrunning in general or when compared to score or something.
Went: Corneria>Aquarosa>Satellite 1(Colony)>Asteroid Field>Sector Beta>Fortune>Hunter>Sector Omega>Corneria 2>Venom and got ~44 mins.

Finally finished the game completely. It was an excellent ride with some of the most epic moments that have ever graced my fingers.
Now that i am done time to hit arcade mode even harder. Bummer I cant use any of the extra arwings in arcade... would love a full snes arwing run. Ill come back later and write my full impressions, just like Neiteio I have seen the light.

It's also disappointing how few planets there are in this. Only six separate planets compared to Star Fox 64's nine (counting Solar, not sure if that's a planet or a star or what), and Zero's Venom hardly counts and Corneria is used twice in the main game not counting side missions. A lot of this game takes place in space, where asset reuse is the easiest. This game is fun but at the same time feels really cheaply made, but I guess it was this or no Star Fox at all.

Second best Star Fox probably, but that's I guess not really a good piece of glowing praise considering 64 is unbeatable and the rest of the series is so bad. Better this being second best than Assault being second best by no measure but default I guess.

Yes, with the NX around the corner, it's unfortunate that Nintendo didn't put enough resources that the game deserves. What we have here is a very good foundation though. It is an EXCELLENT game at its core (don't believe the critics who are stuck in traditional controls since the original Afterburner era). I know it's wishful thinking, but I hope Nintendo releases a DLC pack with 3 more planets (and I don't mind if they re-use the enemies). As incomplete as it is currently, I give the game very high marks for breaking new grounds in the rail-shooter genre. I'm giving it a 9 out of 10. When Nintendo releases a DLC, it can go to 10. The game is that good when you "get it".

Miyamoto, give us Wii U owners and the ones who share your vision something to cheer about. We need a Star Fox Zero DLC!

So, the Asteroid Field escort mission, is the way to get Mission Accomplished on that to let the Great Fox take no damage whatsoever?

Because if so, I have a very important question... How the heck do you even...? I mean, I get taking out the rocks. Probably a matter of knowing when to bomb wisely, but then there's the drones. How do you stop those?

I'm no fan of escort missions, and apparently this game has three. I am not a fan of the first one. And one blob on the map looks eerily like Sector Z, my least favorite mission in SF64.

Just finished the game, it was goddamn amazing, tops 64 to me.

Is the 'wingman' message before the credit dedicated to Iwata?

Because it's the first person I thought about and he was still there in the beginning of the project..man I got some feels when I saw his name in the credits.

:'(

I would assume so. It'd be too dated for Yamauchi.

I don't think you can get a mission accomplished in the extra missions (blue ones in score screen). I for one never seen one.
Yeah, the hidden bonus mission have no accomplished state. The medals on them come from either score/time and medals/coins in terms of the satellite ones.

A little help on Andross........

Move left or right while shooting at the weak points. You can shoot at his hand while it's on top of you while moving to the left or right. Barrel Rolling doesn't work
Not sure about the grab beam, though. B bomb it?

For christsake, was just browsing trade in values for this game and it's already down to $20 at Best Buy. How in gods name is this possible? A Nintendo game, a few weeks out of release... $20?!

Not even week actually. Came out last Friday...
I do believe you can pull back on the right stick while Andross is pulling you in to slow yourself down, but don't quote me on that.
You can. It makes that part a whole lot easier.

Is that really out of the ordinary? Plus, isn't there value for the other game thats packed in?

Yes, it's unusual. First, Nintendo games typically hold their value for a long time. Secondly, even if this was a third-party release, $20 for a trade in a week after release is highly unusual. You'll usually get at least $30, sometimes $35 base.

And neither Gamestop nor Best Buy is accepting Starfox Guard for trade.

Just played through the game and went back to unlock every level. Now to get the medals and play arcade mode like no tomorrow. I'm loving this game so much! I still would've loved the classic control style over the motion controls but I got used to them and they're definitely not as bad as the Internet is saying. Everyone legit was freaking out (not saying you guys or anything) about them and cursing Miyamotos name, but I feel like they're very good once you get the hang of it. Love this series and glad to see it back in full force! :)

SPOILER ALERT FOR THE END OF THE GAME:
I was so touched during the credits when that line dedicating the game to Iwata came up. I was already getting goosebumps because it was legit the same credits as Star Fox 64 but then that annotation came up and it was even more beautiful

It has nothing to do with the game's performance.

Wanted to put this on the next page:

FAN FICTION TIME:

OK, so Star Fox One.

I said it before, but I think it'd be cool if there were two campaigns. Same levels, but different enemy arrangements, moment-to-moment action, etc. And different banter, too: One campaign follows Star Fox (Fox, Slippy, Falco, and Peppy), while the other follows an all-female squad (Krystal, Katt, Miyu and Faye).

You play as Krystal in the latter. In this continuity she's the princess of Sauria who attended military school off-planet. She could be an old friend of Fox this way. This could also be how she met Faye and Miyu (from the unreleased Star Fox II). They could be close friends of hers. As for Katt, Krystal could contract her as a hired gun.

The premise could be that Andross has returned through some feat of mad science. Venom is gone, so he makes Sauria his base of operations, leveraging the dinosaur planet's unique properties to revive himself and rebuild his army.

Krystal's team becomes the lynchpin of a resistance movement trying to reclaim the Saurian throne. They reach out to General Pepper and align themselves with Star Fox to try and stop Andross as he begins to spread out across the Lylat System, including planets not featured in Zero (such as Solar and Macbeth).

In terms of characterization, I'd like Krystal to be a good-hearted straight-shooter like Fox. Miyu could be the group's Falco — a bit cocky, but with talent to back it up. Faye could be the voice of reason, like Peppy, and Katt could be the bubbly comic relief, like Slippy. Granted, I don't how well this matches SFII depictions, but then again, it's a new continuity so everything is fair game!

Their ships could be an evolution of Katt's ship from Zero, with their own unique form of walker/hunter. Perhaps each ship could have a color scheme unique to its pilot; that way Katt could keep her red color scheme but the others could look different.

There could also be a third campaign where you play as the villains: Star Wolf! The team now consists of Wolf, Leon, Andrew and Panther. Being a treacherous swine, Pigma has gone rogue and will complicate the situation later.

I'd also like to see an amphibious "Blue Marine Mode" added to the Landmaster, in addition to the Gravmaster functionality, so that the Landmaster can roll straight into the water and skim the surface like a boat or dive underwater like a sub. In addition, it'd be cool to see the Roadmaster factor into missions.

...just some ideas!

I like your ideas. One idea I was thinking of is to incorporate some strategy and non-linear design. The premise could be that Andross has again declared war on the Lylat Solar System. the levels expand on the gameplay ideas introduced in SF0 and have a same general flow. Although more on rails missions on top of the different mech missions. The difference would be that the overworld now works more like a strategy map. Star Fox and the enemy each move in turns. You only play on a level if the enemy is at that location. You can't let the enemy get to Corneria or destroy the Great Fox. You can also split up into pairs to go to different locations and take out different enemies and you can play as any SF member. The end game is still the same to defeat Star Wolf and Andross. To beat the game it will only take a few hours as usual but depending on your strategy it can take longer or shorter to complete.

To incorporate your idea maybe the all female squad can be a rival squad that also moves around the map. Depending on what moves you make that game, the all female squad can assist you on missions or even challenge you to fights to test your ability. After you complete the main game with Star Fox you can also play the game from the All Female Team's perspective or Star Wolf's perspective.

Also include arcade mode, mission mode and an online dogfight mode.

Yeah by some miracle, I'll hold out hope that maybe Miyamoto wants to do another Star Fox for NX with Platinum developing it. With the engine and everything already developed with Zero they could just uport the engine to NX and develop a sequel. Hopefully with the engine already in place they'll be able to create more content in a quicker development time along with more effort put into the production. As you said the game just felt like a test ground for a control scheme Miyamoto wanted to do. I recall when Miyamoto showed the game behind closed doors at E3 2014 he said he wanted to find a development partner and have it released by 2015 to show you can still release a game like that in a short time frame. However, we all know how that went.

Just completed Arcade Run for the first time. Leon appeared on Fichina during the Mother Strider mission, and I defeated him for a medal. But I'm not sure how I triggered his appearance, though. And a note about the Mother Strider — I caught its subtitle this time: MEGA DRONE. I love how each area, enemy and vehicle has its own subtitle.

And I didn't notice this before, but on Venom I was carrying five bombs at one point. Maybe I never noticed, but I always thought the cap was three bombs at once?

Also, I found the alternate way to defeat Andross. MAN, that's COOL! And when you think about it, it's neat how his design here combines his Star Fox 1 and Star Fox 64 forms.

I really tried to like this game but it's just really badly designed, the level design out of the linear missions is basic and boring as hell, find GIANT switches or drop the little gimmick robot ect.

Bad level design aside, the game is riddled with poor design and mind bogglingly broken co-op.

Did Nintendo even test the first boss in co-op? When the boss fight goes into cinema mode, the pilot loses control of their ship because the camera orbits the boss target, not behind the airwing, so it's impossible to control.

Also, when the camera switches to highlight a key point or target, the airwing is still moving, so unless you ram on the break during an in-level cutscene, you will hit something from the camera being on something else.

This game is awful, there are very few moments where it feels great but no one can stand up and stay the chicken levels are designed well or that first long mission with ROB was any fun. Hell, there's a GIANT wall you can't pass through until you find a switch, but there's no roof, so you can just fly over it, or so it looks, game logic won't let you fly over it.

Ugh, I really wanted to like this, the intro level was a blast and I didn't hate the gyro controls, just the poor design.

In that pic you should have looked a bit to your left. You can fly over the wall there.

I actually don't even like SF 64, I played the 3D version on my 3DS after thoroughly enjoying Kid Icarus' on rails sections and it felt clunky slow and limited compared to that (if that makes sense).

Star Fox Zero is so, so much better than 64. It feels so right (especially the satisfying sound effects hammer home that you are flying a tie-fighter in an intergalactic war).

I love this game. People who are just bad at games be damned.

Edit:

You were supposed to fly through a hole on the wall to your left. But it's just poorly designed I guess.

Level in that screen shot was awful, really badly designed and just not enjoyable in the slightest, finding little holes for the gimmick bot to go into to push GIANT switches.

What was so dumb about that part was the switch to open the door is on the otherside, but you can just spend extra time and fly around to reach it, the gate serves no purpose.

I only really enjoy the on rails levels, they are good fun but WAY too short because the next level will be a chicken walker one or full range in space, which aren't very fun.

I appreciate the game does feel kick as when it's right, but those moments are painfully so few and far between. Of the 6 levels I played, only the first and sixth ones were enjoyable.

I think he's saying that there's no logical reason why the gyrowing can't just go over that wall right there by being able to fly a little higher aside from video game invisible wall/ceiling logic.

Yeah, that was my issue. Poor design, the player knows the craft can go up and down without limits and spends time going over walls like this, so would naturally assume it was another to fly over.

It's a bad oversight, why teach the player one thing and then just throw rules out of the window because it's a switch puzzle. Design should stack, not cancel things out for no reason other than, tackle it this way now.

Platinum's composers do some damn fine work.

Their regular Rei Kondoh is really good, and did the final boss tracks for Bayonetta, Okami, and The Wonderful 101.

It's really obvious when you listen to it, because it sounds a lot more like a platinum soundtrack than a Nintendo one (the use of Latin is a dead giveaway).

The problem is that the music is so low compared to sound effects, i can't seem to find the option menu in order to correct that. : <

Played 3 missions yesterday. Impressions are pretty good!!

It controls better than I was hoping. I mean, there's a learning curve and an adjustment period, but I was already doing pretty well with the controls even just a few minutes in. This does kind of feel like a W101 situation.

Anyone know the alternate routes for Area 3 and Titania? I tried replaying both yesterday and couldn't figure it out (though i could make more guesses for Titania). Area 3 i guessed that i had succeeded in my first run through, and letting them capture the Gigarilla was the "fail" route forward, instead it was just a mission fail :-/, so now i'm stumped.

Area Three: There isn't a route in the level itself. You have to beat Aquarosa and choose to go to Area Three to access the route.

Titania: Transform into the gravmaster and fly into the portal above that big wall with a gold medal on top of it.

Nintendo game = no sound options.

I didn't try it yet, but I think I have a 'solution' to have both the voices and music on TV.

I played with headphones and sound is good, so tonight or tomorrow, I'll buy an extra long Jack 1/8 cord and plug it from the gamepad directly to my sound bar...we'll see if that does the job.

I've played the first 6 or 7 levels of this game and sad to say I hate playing this game and if I could refund this game I would do it (which is the first Nintendo game I can remember feeling this way about). I love Starfox and Star Fox 64, but I hate the duel gameplay focus between the tv and the gamepad screen, I hate the motion controls and I hate it whenever I'm forced to play as the walker or gyroscope. I've really been trying but I just don't think any of those things are going to click with me.

Sad thing is I enjoyed the normal gameplay parts well enough. If this had just been a traditional Star Fox experience I think I would of really enjoyed. Oh well.

Ooh, i would have never figured that out for Area 3, since it tries to shunt you from there to the Arwing version of Zoness. Thanks.

(I was gonna start a new thread but figured that wasn't worth it... so I'll just leave this here.)

Parallels between Metroid: Other M and Star Fox Zero

Both Star Fox and Metroid are beloved franchises to Nintendo fans, yet have not been getting the love that many of us feel they deserve. But is that lack of love justified? Nintendo likely knows very well just how new games in this franchise are going to sell, but eventually give in to fan demand while the given console was in a drought of major (or any) game releases. I feel there are significant parallels between these two games:

Both games Nintendo probably didn't want to risk making, but gave in to demand from the fans. (As already suggested above, and this one is only a personal suspicion.)

Both Nintendo IPs that had 3rd party developers pulled in for development:
>> Metroid Other M - Team Ninja
>> Star Fox Zero - Platinum Games

Both games had controversial control schemes to serve as a final "justification" of their respective console's input methods:
>> Metroid Other M - switching between sideways hold and pointer hold in the heat of action (did anyone consider this choice as something that improved the gameplay?)
>> Star Fox Zero - using both screens in parallel in the heat of action, intentionally keeping either view from being viable on its own (from what I gather, yet to try it myself)

I'm not sure if the parallels end there or not... this is just something that came to mind suddenly.

I don't think the parallel works really. I think the biggest issue people had with Other M was the story and the characterization of Samus.

Myself, I view the games about equally, as decent 7.5 type of games that don't live up to the 9.0+ pedigree of their best predecessors.

I didn't mind the controls in either games at all though. It was more just the level designs being bland compared to past entries.
