So watched the first two episodes. It's odd, far more fanciful that frontier was. It kinda feels like if Frontier was Kawamori trying to do an homage to SDF, this is an homage to Macross 7, it's very magical girl like, and more than a bit silly. Not sure where it's going. I'm curious for more, but I certainly don't love it yet. It feels like early episodes of 7 but with worse music.

It's honestly a Symphogear (another Satelight show) and Macross mashup.

Delta Ep 5

I didn't expect them to be so direct about referencing SDF, especially since I just started watching it alongside this and just barely reached the episode where Milla was introduced before checking out this episode. Oh well.

Good on both Freyja and Hayate to get over their respective personal issues so quickly.

Okay episode. Hayato being so carefree is going to backfire I bet. This is still war we're talking about and he's spouting all that dancing crap.

The ED song is growing on me, Freyja dancing to it in the episode was rather cute.

Indeed.

Upon first going into the show, I would've expected to be biased toward Mirage, particularly given just who her grandparents are. However, I'd have to agree with #TeamFreyja being the best choice so far.

I'm assuming this gets better after the first episode or is it mainly because I went from Based SDF Macross to Plus to DYRL straight to Macross Delta that I nearly had my brain melted?

yeah, i lot of old fans really reacted with a lot of pushback but if you can get over the idols, it's pretty good. M7 is the same way.
I was getting used to it before the first ep ended cause the dogfighting was actually pretty cool. I should be okay as long as the action is up to snuff and I figure out who #bestgirl is. I was a little annoyed that Mirage wasn't the best pilot though. She's a Jenius so what the fuck is up with that?

I really like Hayate and Freyja's dynamic. They just really seem to have fun hanging out, with a shared interest in pop music. Mirage seems to actually be getting along reasonably with Hayate as well now, and their argument in this episode felt more like friendly bickering than an actual argument. Freyja's short lifespan has made it a little harder to call how the love triangle will resolve, as well. I could see a more bittersweet ending where she gets together with Hayate but he knows he'll be a widower at a young age.

I still personally prefer Mirage, but then I had a mad crush on Lisa Hayes when I was 12.

There's nothing wrong with Misa Hayase though.

Misa is great, too.

Having re-watched FB7 recently, I realised that 7 is basically a Precure show. The villains show up every week, the heroes rush out to fight them, there's lots of stock footage, and the series ends with a fight against a giant space monster using the power of
love and hope
rock and roll powered laser beams.

I mainly want to see M7 for the Max and Miriya drama.

I honestly thought that Prince was a girl when I first saw him and have been operating under the belief he was a girl until this episode.

All the episodes of 7 with Sivil were my favorite. Really liked that character for some reason. They were always less fillery.

Macross has been campy as fuck from the very beginning. 7 reaches all new heights, but it's never been a super serious show.
But why is the original Macross so tonally different then? I mean it had a fair mix of light and dark to it. Unless that's just me looking at that one through nostalgia glasses?

Nah, it's not nostalgia glasses at all. SDF Macross is definitely tonally different than the later series and manages to mix the idol music into the show in a way that works pretty well. It's a bit due to the era too though. Even Frontier and Delta are influenced by the era as well. That's why I give them some leeway and am willing to watch some of it in hopes that they still manage to capture the spirit and not just the form of Macross. Unfortunately, Kawamori...

Interestingly, I think Mac 7 is the only one that's not really a product of its era because of just how fucking goofy it is. I guess you could make an argument for its music to be part of that era but the rest of the show, lol.

Why then can't they just repeat what made SDF Macross so fucking good then?

I'm not so sure it's necessarily a case of it being that they can't repeat it so much as the Frontier/Delta direction is more profitable. This, however, is only conjecture.

I always found it interesting that something like Plus is part of the same franchise continuity as Frontier and Delta. In terms of tone, themes, and cast, it couldn't be more different, its execution not all that surprising seeing as its key people (not just Kawamori and Kanno, but Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto as well) would work together again on Cowboy Bebop afterward. As much as I enjoyed it though, I rather doubt that we'll see another Macross quite like that one.

Well this sucks. I better get used to the world filled with rainbow waifu's with rocket booster skirts. Is Frontier exactly like this or a little toned down? I just checked to see what Kawamori worked on. He created fucking Escaflowne! Why the hell is he churning out rainbow waifu material?!

Hah, this is nothing for Kawamori.

Not exactly like it, but far more similar than dissimilar. Though Ranka and later Sheryl were deciding factors in the outcomes of battles through their singing, Walkure definitely represent an escalation in overall capabilities and the role of idols on the battlefield (I never would've pictured Macross idols doing things like boosting around and deploying barrier drones before Delta, which was why I had no idea why Kawamori would account for a whole squad of idols before seeing their implementation for myself).

I'm expecting one of them to die. Can't avoid a Macross Missile Massacre forever. I mean the idols at least have a use now and they're really enthusiastic about their job unlike fucking DYRL Minmay whom Hikaru had to verbally pimp smack into singing.

It would be quite jarring to see idols suffer casualties rather than just pilots. No idea if Kawamori would pull the rug out from under everyone like that, though.

Admittedly, I have yet to see 7 (I had been avoiding it because I expected to find it too silly, even by Macross standards, but considering the fact that I like Frontier and what I've seen of Delta so far, I'm one to talk).

At least you don't have to relearn Macross like I do.

Definite whiplash in going from SDF + DYRL and Plus straight into Delta. By comparison, it felt like Frontier eased me into the transition in how it started (it ramped up gradually as the series went on), whereas Delta pretty much throws viewers into the deep end right off the bat.

I went from best girl waifu looking like this:

At least Mirage looks like a human being.

Of course a show made in 2016 doesn't use character designs from the 80s. I feel like you're one step away from starting to rant about how moe ruins everything.

Why are people trying so hard to make me appreciate Macross 2 nowadays...

I thought it was rubbish back in the day, but if only I had known what was coming after Plus.

Unicorn is an explicit appeal to nostalgia, just like Gundam the Origin or Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
And people love those. It could work with Macross as well. A modern animated Macross with the 80's designs would look pretty damn good since the classic designs actually aged pretty well. I'll get over it. I'm on ep 2 now. I can already tell Hayate will be the one to teach Mirage formation rhythm. Walkure has like some fucking Jojo anatomy with that finger W shit.

You know, the original Macross character designer did the character designs for the currently airing anime Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. You should probably check that out if you haven't already.
