Uncharted 4 - A Thief's |Reviews Thread| Nateness Awaits

I don't understand how anyone can look at the last 20% of any Uncharted game and claim the shooting and encounter design isn't anything but mediocre at best. Level variety, vertical variety, pacing, music etc. are all great but it's riddled with shitty monsters and/or bullet sponges and poor weapon feedback.

I am not totally sure why I have to look at the last 20% of something only. I tend to look at 100% of something to evaluate it. In fact a lot of great games lose something towards the end or have bad parts, even utter classics like Halo or RE4. Shit, Gears 1 has RAAM which, to me, is a horrible boss. I'm not going to discount the whole game because of it.

Now, the best game in the series is 2. When praising the gameplay in Uncharted that's mainly what I'm talking about. The first level is a nice atmospheric level without really any guns. Overall cool but nothing special in terms of gameplay. Borneo is a fun intro to the mechanics. Now, everything gun-related starting in Nepal until Shambala is utterly fantastic, from battles to set pieces. It's the best level design... so varied, with so many possibilities, perfectly paced, combining guns and traversal during battles perfectly. Whether it's the utterly brilliant train setting or the other-worldly monastery battle location, it all just works (fine, that "boss" in the train excepted). Shambala isn't very long and has some parts that aren't stellar (the boss is meh, and fighting the first blue guys with the AK kind of sucks) but overall is still fun. So all in all? Absolutely a world-class shooter experience.

"Shitty monsters" and "bullet sponges" are criticisms I don't agree with. Yes, they're harder enemies that you have to work harder on to beat. This doesn't bother me in the least. It's a challenge. In fact, that huge fight between the blue guys, the chaingun guy, regular mercenaries, and Nate in that big room -- that was really fun to me. It didn't bother me in Halo Reach, where every elite is a bullet sponge of the highest order, and it didn't bother me in Gears, where the enemies are -- on average -- harder to take down with the basic rifle than Uncharted 2 enemies with an AK or M4.

Again, I can agree with the weapon feedback criticism. Guns in Uncharted 2, subjectively speaking, don't "feel" as organic as in some other shooters. That's true. However, playing a gun battle isn't 100% composed of how the gun feels. To me, level design, verticality, tactical possibilities are all hugely important. And Uncharted 2 excels at these.

Wow, it actually looks basically the same imo. I think the cinematic angle of the first shot make it look more appealing and realistic, but otherside it honestly looks the same to me. Cant believe they managed to do it. I guess the various "best graphics ever" statements we've had so far about this game were really on point.

This is clearly the best looking game by miles and miles, but it pretty obvious to see that the original scene was prerendered. The gouges on Nate's face, the hair shader, and overall bounce lighting are not present in final game.

LMAO, the defensiveness and the salt is astonishing. Keep it up, "9 or 10 or your opinion is worth shit" guys, the fanboyism is hilarious.

And yes, quoting my posts of people acting shitty is a "wall of Shane" now ay lmaaao

Never change guys, always making a entertaining mess of a review thread.

I can sell you mine for $1,000 if you want.

the ayy is just supposed to be ayyy. and lmao. i've seen it a lot too and it can get sorta eh.

yeah chances are it could stay at 94 but at this point i don't think it's possible for it to be below 90, is it?

na i don't get it.

I don't think so. As i see the final score will be between 93-95.

And xxracerxx is referring to how Bernardo tried to discredit another poster by calling him "junior".

You're not being serious, right?
No, he's joking.

It's nice seeing some of the comments about people not wanting another one. Not for the reason of not wanting to play more uncharted, just that it feels complete. Good Job ND. You guys deserve all the praise you get.

Ah, the meltdown continues.

Agreed.

I would not be here if I did not enjoy playing the last 3.

Disagree.

I am not a huge fan of Uncharted 1-3 and I am extremely excited for Uncharted 4, based on the improvements in gunplay ND started with The Last of Us. I always felt Uncharted was a bit floaty, but after TLoU, I believed in them to bring those improvements over to Uncharted. The reviews and my hands-on with the MP Beta show me they have.

you're the standout individual causing more of a mess than anyone else here, lol..

I really haven't seen very many posts like that in this thread. There's been a lot more people trying to bait meltdowns than actual meltdowns. I'd say the review thread has been a lot more civil than the recent QB and Star Fox threads.
I've seen them, and I called them out as such. Apparently though some people here didn't actually read those somehow. There has been countless people here attacking reviewers for not giving it a 9/10, and for having issues with the game you don't agree with it.

This is somehow invalidated because a guy went out making a wall quote of my posts, and now people joined in on the bandwagon of a "wall of shame" literally having no arguments of their own whatsoever, and continously not being able to disprove what the people I was talking about were doing

But sure, those people now dont exist, magically. I love how quickly people went to pile up after that "wall of shame" post. Really shows they have no worthy rebuttal of their own at all.

Same deal here.

your aggressive posts in this thread speak for themselves. a rebuttal isn't necessary

I like Twilight Princess a lot, and U4 got an 8.8 too, which means U4 is probably one I'll enjoy a lot when I get to it. The actual 8.8 means nothing, but knowing it's comparable to Twilight Princess quality is a good thing. It's in good company.

There's weirdos in every review thread, especially for high profile exclusives, but as a whole I think this thread ended up a lot more civil than people expected. We haven't even come close to the fuckery of Uncharted 3.

Dude, we're not pretending there weren't other dumb posts, but that doesn't validate your passive aggressive behaviour and downright disrespect to other members by talking them down. That's what we're saying, and you're flat out denial and acknowledgment of your attitude is exactly the problem. Just back away, learn from it and move on. You don't have to win this fight.

If there's one aspect about Uncharted 4 that looks to be unanimous is that its graphics are best in class. Can't wait to see it for myself!

LMAO. The meltdowns continue.
Yes, someone having a different opinion is completely on purpose to be different from the club. Holy shit are you 12
Its ironic by the way you've been acting in this thread and then calling out someone being 12 lol. You complain about the thread being a mess but you're pretty much making things worse. Stop already.

You've been a needlessly aggressive presence ever since you started posting in this thread I think. If this is a "mess of a review thread" then it's largely due to your contribution, since things were relatively peaceful beforehand.

Why do you think I put him on ignore? I'm surprised he hasn't been warned about his behavior because it's obvious all he wants to do is cause trouble and go on some asinine witchhunt.

I wanna address this a bit. Mainly the twist moments part.

I feel like that misses the point of the twists in this game. None of the twists are trying to blow you away like it's a plot twist or as if your watching Lost or something. They're kind of there to setup the character moments and dialogue. The game doesn't even treat them as plot twists, so I'm not sure why you would roll your eyes at them.

I've called out shitposts of people spouting dumb statements such as thinking a review is invalid because its a 8/10' that they want to "standout" and "send a message". People that seriously spout such statements can't be argued with it.

Yes. I'm the one calling reviewer's opinions "invalid" because they didn't give it a 9, I'm the one saying that a reviewer have it a 8 because they are "attention whores that want to stand out". But yeah, keep pretending such posts dont exist.

This insane Twitter meltdown over an 8.8 score is absolutely beautiful:

Guys, we don't need to bring more ammunition. If it's not form GAF and won't ADD to the discussion, maybe it's best to not post.

Seriously man, what do you want?

How is your constant parroting of how some people are dumb is going to make the thread better? Just roll your eyes and move on, you don't need to keep people in check.

literally no one has said this in the thread

While it still looks mind blowing, I am pretty sure that the E3 2014 was never rendered on the PS4. It was likely prerendered footage from the engine. This is obvious from the hair which doesn't seem to be using the same Kajiya-kay hair shader as the E3 footage.

Also, you can see more polygonal edges on Nate's gun strap. The gouge in Nate's head looks a lot less intense and painted on in the final game. Most importantly, the overall lighting doesn't exhibit the global illumination in the original trailer, appearing a lot flatter with very little bounce light. Perhaps the lighting was faked by manually placing in a bunch of bounce lights, but it's obvious that the amount of bounce lights available in realtime even to fake an approximation was just not enough.

How can you get such assumptions and conclusions from just comparing two pics which are in different conditions: different angle, lighting , zoom level? The first scene is a little darker that is why you have you have more indirect bounced lights while in the second pic Nathan is exposed to more direct light. I don't know how did you conclude that it doesn't use Kajiya-Kay model for hair shading. Because the hair is brighter in the second scene due to more direct exposure to light? Well Using Kajiya-Kay is not a luxury anymore. It has been used in many games and engines including The Order and Uncharted 4 is using it too: http://n4g.com/news/1640666/unchart...s-were-made-shows-direct-feed-wip-screenshots

Real-time rendered in game. This is not CGI or pre-render, which means all the shading features for skin, hair, eyes need to be written in code.

Using Disney Diffuse model, GGX Brdf model and Screen Space Subsurface.

Hair is using Kajiya-kay Brdf model

Please check carefully before jumping into such conclusions.

Dude seriously man? Just take the loss and learn from it. You continuously trying to convince anyone that you're right is just making things worse. I just feel embarassed for you now.

Nothing in this thread has reached the levels of QB UC3 or any of the other high profile games yet. Yea definitely some dumb comments made by some users, but its really not as bad as what you're making it.

You make it sound as if this is a rampant problem in this thread in which it really isn't... Sure, there are such shitposts, but as Jigorath said, this thread is nowhere near as bad as Star Fox Zero or Quantum Break's review threads.

Regarding the e3 trailer and that image, if my memory serves me they explicitly stated that it was not pre-rendered. The assumption(? or confirmation / lack thereof) was that they were running it with multiple PS4s connected to be able to make it look that good.

I've seen more than one post stating that the Sterling and IGN reviews were lower than the average simply because they wanted attention.

he quoted "attention whores that want to stand out" which implies that is literally what someone wrote. which is not true at all.

he's paraphrasing to make those posts sound worse than they are
