Now you have me worried for poor Nightcrawler and Quicksilver. If you don't mind me asking, do they get any love in the movie or did we get everything from them in the trailers?
Those two they do.

Actually it's what you see in the OP first poster.

Quicksilver gets more involvement than he did in DoFP. You definitely didn't see much of him from just the trailers. It still feels like an attempt to do the same shit they did with him in DoFP though, I didn't feel it was as creative, but it was still fun.

Nightcrawler was done pretty well. I don't really see how they could have given him more than what he has in here. Integrated into most of the film, has a few good scenes, more than two fights, and shows off his powers a lot.

Jubilee is totally wasted in the film. She is -not- a character. She is essentially a background cameo with maybe 2 lines, and the only reason she's visible in the crowd scenes is because of her distinctive design. It's massively disappointing.

In terms of character use and development, without spoiling anything here's how it goes:

Main new characters: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler

These characters get lots of screen time and lines, you see them interact with many other characters, and they form the backbone of the overall story along with the established characters.

Secondary new characters: Storm, Angel

You see these characters established in scenes showing what they do before they are dragged into the main story of the film, and later they have some good fight scenes which shows off their powers.

The New Blink: Psylocke

This is a sexy character with cool powers whose only purpose in the film is to show some flesh while getting two long-ish videogame fights. Zero characterization, zero actual role in the story.

Cameo-tier: Jubilee

:(

Was excited for Jubilee to asian this shit up but nooooope, she may as well not have a role in this movie at all.

Took a glance at the soundtrack and good lord is
Like a Fire hinting at Phoenix Jean in this?!
It caught my ears really quickly.

Those posters are unbelievably bad.

It is almost an X-Men tradition at this point. Are they doing it on purpose?

So with all the obvious cut content has FOX said anything about an extended cut of the film?

Hey Duckroll I have one question: Where would you rank this among the mainline X-Men films?

Quicksilver scenes are going to have people at DC pointing at prospective Flash directors and going "that, can you give us two hours of that?". They shouldn't go that far, but the world is ready for solo speedster shenanigans and Quicksilver steals the show again.

Phew, I'm glad QS is still fun. I'm actually shocked Nightcrawler is one of the mains and Storm is B-tier. Thanks for explaining duck, I'm kinda looking forward to it now just for Nightcrawler.

ps rip jubilee forever and always >:(

Script is better than Last Stand, worse than all the other main X-men films. Characters are better than First Class and Last Stand, doesn't reach the levels of DoFP and X2. I find it hard to compare with the first X-men film because I don't think it has aged very well. I think it's a fun movie but it's a weaker DoFP that really wants to reference and reuse what people liked about DoFP, but with a much weaker and messier script.

been saying this for a minute now. singer set the standard for speedster power displays in live action after dofp. seeing this on friday but i hope he also has some action that is shown in our perspective speed too so i can see how that was pulled off as well.

Saw this on Friday with no hype whatsoever, it kind of just crept up on me.
Solid movie, I enjoyed it, just really fun. Nothing too deep.
Would recommend.

Agree about the script. But I liked that it had a lot of X-Men stuff. They used their powers a lot, reminded me of what I liked in First Class.

Maybe it wasnt as impressive as DoFP but had more characters involved.

I'll re-post what put in the review thread.

The Good:
- Great intro sequence setting up Apocalypse
- Quicksilver is amazing and stole the show, his 2 sequences had me in tears laughing. Someone give this man his own damn movie.
- New versions of Jean, Cyclops, Nightcrawler were really good
- Magento was great
- Xavier coming across almost like a stalker/perv to Moira was funny.
- The Way Angel became Arch Angel was great

Not so Good.
- CGI was great at times and crappy at times especially the closer you got to the end of the film
- Apocalypse, he's my best damn villain of all time so i was super hyped for him in this and he was wasted.

Overall though good effort but not as good as X2 or DoFP

Going to watch this again next week when i get the chance

Saw the movie yesterday and I have mixed feelings about it. It's not bad by any means (nothing near Last Stand-tier) but I as much as I would love to, I can't really call it a good movie. The worst thing is, I can't really pinpoint what I didn't like about it, what I would like to fix. Because various separate parts are good, it ticks various X-Men moments for me (see valeu's post above), and yet... The only thing that comes to mind is that it's way too long; the whole first half of the movie is really unfocused, it tries to introduce a lot of new characters by giving them separate scenes and thus it jumps back and forth between them. And while those are cool scenes on their own, I think it takes the movie way too long to finally deliver something, move the story significantly forward. It seemed to me like the first half of the movie was just a set up, after set up.

I also have mixed feelings about the Quicksilver scene. It looks great, it's a lot of fun but it felt like been there, done that (only longer and funnier). And I don't like how Quicksilver in this series (in his main scenes from DoFP and this one) looks less like a speedster and more like someone who can slow down time. Both Age of Ultron Quicksilver and TV series Flash, when they do their speedster things, they look like someone who just move really, really fast. That's not the case with X-Men Quicksilver. Also,
maybe I'm spoiled by the Flash TV series, but shouldn't QS also heal super fast? The way Apocalypse defeated him was super lame given how powerful QS is in those movies.

To the list of my complains I could also add Magneto's scenes in Poland (I'm a Pole). I appreciate that they set the scenes in my country, that they spoke Polish, but my God does that ruined those scenes for me. Fassbender sounded like... well, like a foreigner trying really hard to speak Polish correctly (and at the same time failing at actually delivering proper emotions in his lines) and everyone else sounded so fake, unnatural. Especially during the forest scene (which was, or at least could be, amazing),
the cops
the script was so theatrical, and lines were so well-maniered that they didn't fit the situation at all.
when your see that your collegue just killed a powerful mutant's family, you don't say "Micheal, what have you done?" (fully grammatically correctly: "Michale, co ty zrobiłeś?"). You say something like "You fuckhead, what the fuck have you done?!", and even that would be consider a polite version in that situation.
. It was obvious that those lines were written in English and then translated into Polish without consideration how they will sound for Polish viewers.

Other than that, I liked the movie. The new cast was great and had a lot of development (just a shame that they cut Jubilee's scenes so much). Apocalypse, for what he was (a powerful mutant with god complex and huge ego) was also fine; I loved what they did with his voice.
But the final mind-battle was the definition of good idea, bad execution.
Psylocke, Angel and Storm - while they were just extended cameos (a one or two solo scenes, and few action scenes) - I liked them. They did the job properly. And of course McAvoy and Fassbender were great as usual.

It was a good watch, but unlike FC and DoFP, I don't feel like rewatching it anytime soon.

Quicksilver scenes are going to have people at DC pointing at prospective Flash directors and going "that, can you give us two hours of that?". They shouldn't go that far, but the world is ready for solo speedster shenanigans and Quicksilver steals the show again.

Good god, no! Singer's Quicksilver is great in small quantities, but he's too powerful to be in a solo two-hours movie. If he would like, he could easily defeat all Apocalypse's baddies in few seconds (literally), without them even realizing what hit them.
Hell, he was treating Apocalypse as a punch bag and were defeated only because some script shenanigans that allowed Apocalypse to somehow take a break and trap QS while being punched dozens of times per second
.

If anything, DC should aim at TV series Flash type of Flash. A very fast guy that can break sound barrier if he really tries, but not someone with abilities to practically stop the time at will like the X-Men SQ.

Got back from X-Men: Apocalypse just now. Found it to be a really enjoyable film. I've loved the previous two films and X2, and I felt Apocalypse stacks up just a tad below them. Definitely not the disaster the critics and so many more have said it is. Far from it. Going to give a brief rundown as to what I liked and didn't.

+ Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy as Magneto and Charles Xavier, respectively. The two best actors in the X-Men films. They can easily act circles around 99 % of the cast, and that of MCU as well. They're that good.
+ None of the stupid humour you'll find in other Marvel films. The humour was there, but it wasn't of the cheap split-second Downey variety, which is a huge, huge plus these days.
+ Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse. While I would have liked a more direct adaptation from the 90's cartoons, he was still good here. Was a great feeling seeing the character finally on-screen after years and years of hoping.
+ Quicksilver, yet again
+ Some strong character moments.
+ Metallica's The Four Horsemen

- Some characters underutilized
- Even though the plot held up quite decently throughout, for the most part, it ended up getting a bit muddled towards the end.
- Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Seriously now. She has to go. It was clear she didn't even want to be there. Really poor job by JL.
-----
Overall, as I said, the film was enjoyable. Could it have been better? Ofcourse. But it's NOT the disaster some are saying it is. Atleast in my opinion.

QS scene was cool, until i realised from neogaf that futurama did it first!

And like someone else mentioned, thankfully QS didnt stopped too long for lunch, if not all would be lost.

lack of mall babes eating chili fries is disappointing

The Jubilee Mall Cut will totally be a thing, calling it now.

And yeah, the X-Men films have always felt more... grounded than the MCU stuff in a way. (Sometimes DC movies give me a similar vibe, when they don't drop the ball.)

Thinking of catching Apocalypse next week. So, I prepared myself. Rewatched X1, X2 and Days of Future Past. I don't own Last Stand and I've watched First Class so many times already (love it).

  • X-Men (2000) - ★★½ - Hasn't really aged that well. It feels sloppy and rushed. The entire fight in the museum felt so out of place. This movie wouldn't fly these days. A remnant.
  • X2 (2003) - ★★★ - Solid stuff. It hasn't aged as gracefully as I want to believe. It's still good and inspired but there are stuff that's lacking.
  • X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) - n/a - Too long since I watched it. Wasn't offended by it but I don't remember anything particularly good about it.
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - n/a - I'd rather not watch this again
  • First Class - ★★★★½ - The best of the bunch. So much energy and fun fill the screen. Among the best comic book movies and the best X-Men movie.
  • Wolverine - ★★★ - Entertaining action movie.
  • Days of Future Past - ★★★½ - Better than I remember it. Some really clever stuff. A bit half-baked in certain aspects but always entertaining.

Let's see how Apocalypse treats me.

Is it really a serious criticism that a character in one of these movies doesn't get much screen time? Xmen is known for having a huge roster of characters and it's impossible to give lots of time to everyone. Jubilee as a character probably doesn't rate much time, either.

Saw it last night and I absolutely loved it. It has some flaws but I enjoyed every minute I was extremely disappointed in Civil War so it was nice to get some redemption with this one.

I would guess somewhere between ★★½ and ★★★. I still think X2 is a better film but the first X-men trilogy has not aged well in terms of effects and production values. Especially given the genre at large.

I bet you will like Apocalypse a lot if you rank first class highest. I feel like Apocalypse is closer to being a First Class sequel. I loved both FC and DoFP but I found them very different movies and I like them for almost completely different reasons.

In DoFP I enjoyed the plot, the general idea of sending somenones consciousness back in time, the personalities, their emotions, their struggles, their dilemmas, Xaviers pain (the scene talking through Logan's mind to his future self is by far the strongest I've witnessed in any super hero movie), the whole point of showing a better path to humans.

In First Class there wasnt so much of the above but I loved it because for the first time I said 'yeah this is Xmen', the movie really focused on their abilities and I liked that it wasnt just Professor and Magneto.

Posted in the spoilers thread earlier, nothing spoiler-ish...but really liked it.

Still like First Class more of the new ones (and X2 of the originals). But it was good and well done, the ending was perfect.

Gotta give props also to the new/younger cast; Cyclops, Jean and Nightcrawler especially.

Watched it yesterday it was a good summer box office movie for me and it's so obvious quicksilver scene again stole the show for me, that scene is so good and funny

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-e...s-to-early-criticism-of-villain-a7042151.html

'At one stage, singer also floated the idea of having a CGI Apocalypse, but felt the character needed to connect to the four horseman on a more personal level'

“We built a suit and enhanced Oscar’s size,” he continued. “But nonetheless to be as intimate and persuasive in his interaction with our lead characters, I made the decision to have him for the most part be in human form.”

Damit Singer, i would have preferred a CGI Apocalypse

too much cheese, just like first class.

Couldn't believe this movie came from Singer as I saw his name at the end credits.

Honest trailers is gonna be great on this one.

its good but they knew it also and it kept going and going and going. Its the same beat repeated x 5-6 times

^51% and 5.6/10 on RT seems more like middle of the road than "this movie is a disaster" to me.

I didnt like it much. After the rather excellent DOFP, this was sorta eh

Me too

Civil War is just the airport scene

Apocalypse is far, far from perfect. But at least the whole movie is entertaining

I don't call Apocalypse and his 80s band standing around and waiting for the film to catch up with them entertaining. The fact it took four people to come up with this films "story" is incredible.

I didn't like it that much. I found the first half way more interesting than the second one. But there're a couple of scenes that could be in my top-5 Xmen movie scenes of all time.

Why is Oliva Munn featured so much on the poster, for a good portion of the movie she and the other horsemen are literally just standing on rocks in super hero poses.

Film was ruined for me by over use of slow motion shots (not Quicksilver) and SO much dialogue, the scenes ran on for too long by trying to be grand and cinematic.

Also, Jubilee did nothing, what a waste.

How is it so impossible for the X-Men to get a good poster? My stars.

The one with Apocalypse's silhouette rising from the ruins of Xavier's school is pretty good though. As for the rest though, the entire cast looks fucking bored. Here in the UK Sky Broadband is using the cast to market it, and I actually had to stop and take a photo of one of the bus-stop ads because they just look so goddamn bored.

its a lot like this really. And apocalypse
and his entourage going around the world in a pink bubble.
<-- not really even a spoiler I dont think.

and once they all got together, they stood on a hill for 2-3 scenes.

That was my problem with it, there is literally more screen time for them all standing around on that hill rather than fighting.

All of Quicksilvers scenes seemed tonnaly out of place, like an injection of comic relief and life, for it to suddenly just stop dead after.

Hmm, not out in US yet? I just saw this over the weekend and quite enjoyed it. Hadn't kept up with the developments and went in with no expectations.

First time in all of the movies where they actually gave Eric substance and character growth. For that alone, I enjoyed it.
