Digitimes: NX mass production delayed to early 2017, VR integration, hybrid(?)

"Nintendo originally planned to order 20 million units for the first year, but its shipment target is now only 9.5-10 million units.".

This doesn't make sense. Their expectations lowered by half?! PS4K and Scorpio is going to kill it, isn't it?

Man, I don't think that is possible. Order size is not something you can change within day and night. This does not even make sense.

What was Reggie saying about VR last year ?

"I haven't walked the floor, so I can't say in terms of what's on the floor today, but at least based on what I've seen to date, it's not fun, and it's not social. It's just tech."

So they must've done VR fun.

Not good at all with Neo Scorpio huh? Dayum.. Nintendo..

Their advantage in positioning is worsening as time moves ahead...if they would be able to release their system soon, it would have been better (in my opinion). Especially if it is not more powerful than base PS4/Xone.

Dammit Nintendo.

EDIT: the part where it says "Nintendo is adding VR functionality to satisfy the market" just does not sound like Nintendo at all. That is not how they operate, lol. I don't think this is believable.

Would VR really be worth all the hassle and ridicule Nintendo is getting, let alone potentially delaying the NX further? Provided this is true, of course.

This part is also interesting

Although Pegatron Technology has been aggressively looking to take some of the Nintendo NX orders from Foxconn, Nintendo still decided to give Foxconn over 40% of the orders, while the remaining is handled by Japan-based Misumi and Hosiden. Taiwan-based component suppliers for Nintendo NX include Foxconn Technology, Macronix International, Pixart Imaging and Delta Electronics.

Macronix makes the cartridges for the 3DS right ?

For all we know the whole reason for the delay could be software related and to boost the specs up a bit. Watching SuperMetalDave's latest video, he really does his research on how and why the NX console will use Polaris. So maybe Nintendo was planning on using some really custom version of the Polaris chip and found out later that they could get something better without breaking the bank. For all we know all 3 consoles coming out may end up using a variation of the Polaris 10, just cut down and designed to specific needs. I really didn't expect AMD to announce a 5Tflop card for $199 yesterday, but they did and that changes things a lot...

I don't see Nintendo as a company that just 'adds VR'. I mean it would be like just adding 3D to the 3DS - it was a core concept.

Not to mention the article declares Nintendo's concerns over the industry and then has them backing VR which really looks to be going nowhere.

Well this tells me that whatever the specs were "before" are getting better.

I guess I won't call "directionless!" since nobody knows shit about it.

Yeah, if anything, delaying only means it'll actually meet the production target. Unless they are cutting the production in half to focus on VR and Wiimote 2.0.

This rumor is quite silly. Skeptical but interesting.

Story sounds like bullshit.

Unless Nintendo suddenly cut a check for PS4K chips there is no way there is a change this late in the game and certainly no VR chance. Production would not be starting anytime soon for a March 2017 release anyways. If trends stay as they are Nintendo would not even begin receiving chips based on the March timeline until like November or December

Adding VR will kill this. Regardless of VR's potential, it will start off being niche. Has to. And Nintendo's version of it simply won't compete with Valve's, or likely even PSVR. So it'll be a half measure afterthought of a niche thing that will delay this console further and be shoehorned into games that don't need it, while also jacking up the system price.

It's a terrible idea, which makes me think this must be inaccurate - I simply can't see anybody thinking otherwise.

I'm calling bullshit; the production delay would likely affect the release window they've given the product a while back. Not a good look when they already don't have one for missing the holidays.

Maybe the March launch will be as small as it gets.

The whole thing reads like a mash-up of other rumors/information on providers, and like complete nonsense.

I'm not against the idea fundamentally speaking, my problem is that Ninty does things the half-assed way... so i am expecting a card-board VR headset with 480i resolution for each eye or something... *thinks of Wii U gamepads terrible LCD screen... shudders*

So it's PSVR and XBScorpio+Rift on the high end

Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream on the low end (If Apple doesn't join in)

This doesn't look like a bright future or smart move... Hope it's fake.

Actually I think they have added things last minute before. The enhanced 3D in the New 3DS was a last minute addition according to this:

And who's making their mystery headset? You can't just "throw it in" at the last minute, either they'd have made a massive partnership or Nintendo has conjured up hardware from the aether because headsets take years of planning and development.

Completely different.

Since when is VR tech cheap and mature enough for Nintendo to jump on board this quickly, as a late addition to what should be a too close to ready console? I suppose there's a remote chance that there's been some team in a basement somewhere working out how to Do It Right since the Virtual Boy underwhelmed and they only recently found The Solution but c'mon, as if.

I don't think Nintendo's shown the slightest interest in modern VR yet. And knowing how generally behind the curve they tend to be with the newest trends, as well as constantly saying the NX is not a hybrid console-handheld, I'm calling fake.

Maybe they are developing a headset-free VR solution that makes you think you are in your living room playing NX on your TV.

if this is true, they're really overthinking things.

seems like the NX is something that might be complicated and that could easily kill it since the Wii U was a complicated machine and look how it turned out.
simpler things are what grabs the mass market.

interesting but if true, is this going to be another proprietary VR headset like the PSVR, or more like an optional alliance with other company like HTC for the Vive...
Idk if this is the right call because even though VR is a huge deal, is not necessary to sell consoles and delaying the NX because of it is not worth enough .

If the rumored NX was not as powerful as PS4K or the new Xbox, then how could this do VR effectively?

Further, if the NX was delayed for software reasons and Nintendo really did swerve at the last second for VR, I don't think even a delay until March would give them enough time to make VR games...at least the kinds of games that we'd like to play. A basic Wii Sports kind of thing maybe with traditional games padding out the lineup would be the most I could see in that scenario.

I dunno, I'm just skeptical that this will be some kind of VR machine.
