Jimquisition: Game Industry Executives Are Fucking Idiots (June 6, 2016)

Battlefield 1 has turned a lot of heads. Its announcement video is the most liked trailer on YouTube. Hell, even I'M interested in it.

Electronic Arts executives, however, didn't want it to happen, which is sadly true of a lot of executives in this industry. People who know nothing, yet are paid to control everything.

They're idiots, and we'll never know what potential future successes they killed in the womb.

Link to the video!

Sounds like an interesting episode.

Is profanity and the use of the word "fuck" so important to convey a message these days?

Is it so necessary and appealing somehow?

Smh...

This also applies to Microsoft A LOT. Closing Ensemble, not greenlighting Rare projects, fucking True Fantasy Live Online, passing on Destiny, XBO original DRM, etc.

The Battlefield comments seem really premature until the game comes out and actually sells. YouTube likes literally don't mean anything.

Is it unreasonable for EA to think a World War 1 game might be a tough sell?

Hell, a lot of people think World War 1 was exclusively a trench war.

You get sand in your Vagina or something?

I see, so when can someone consider in this forum to feel insulted? I guess I should take this rather pathetic comment as fun and jokes right? So in essence I could also insult other people and just say its all in good spirit.

I don't understand why some four letter words make some of you twitch. People use naughty words, get over it.

Activision for years before Modern Warefare.
"Just keep making the WW2 stuff, stop trying to make that new shit."

I have a bigger issue with using a term that means shaking my head but only capitalizing the first letter, then having ellipses after it.

Though that is better than someone I work with who recounted an event and then said "shaking my head" while not even doing so.

You are a very serious person, I get it..............

Really dont understand the hate for the swearing, i mean of course there can be times it comes across as childish but thats down to its implementation.

Swearing can be very beneficial and in fact more often than not makes dialogue feel a lot more natural as its how many people do indeed speak casually. I cant stand watching a gritty, mature piece of content or a discussion around something emotional only for the writing to avoid using any swearing due to age restrictions.

Do we really have to propagate the idea that all the people who run video game publishers and development houses don't know anything about gaming and are all morons?

It's so childish and untrue. As if gamers or critics would make better business decisions at that level. Of course the publishers originally said no? It's a fucking gamble to go back to WW1. A gamble does not automatically equal a good idea.

Is it unreasonable for EA to think a World War 1 game might be a tough sell?.

Not at all but they wear a suit and tie to work so they automatically don't get "muh videogames" and don't understand how budgets, products and markets work because they haven't played Final Fantasy 7.

Eh to be fair they game is happening and we need to wait until the game has a chance to come out and sell. I have no doubts it'll sell well since it has the BF name, but it could very well crater as well.

That said BF and COD will be the top shooters this fall anyway so it doesn't matter.

"Doesn't mean anything"? The popularity of that game is off the charts right now, if you think that so much much exposure won't do the game any good you are dead wrong

Despite my love for Destiny, that game almost destroyed Bungie so I don't think we can give MS slack for that.

Nope, Jim's fans think he is some fountain of wisdom, i have read better insights and commentary on Twitter.

Guy is an attention seeker first and foremost.

It's hard to have someone come in and think nothing but profits in mind.

Yes any board will be happy to see a CEO who is focused on profits, but it always ends up with them altering a game's quality or giving devs "creative changes" to make them more appealing to whatever audience they think their bullshit is selling too.

It's sad. You really need people to take these rolls that at least know at least some basic ideas of game design, or to not just look at what's selling but to ask why.

Actually I think it can be a very fair point to make and one based in truth.

In every business place, you often find the higher up the ladder the less they actually know about the basics and what anyone heavily involved would consider common sense. Most higher ups tend to be there just to sign off on things and have very little experience themselves or at least it’s a surface level that they aren't able to put into perspective.

Just because someone is at the top of a video games company, it doesn’t mean they know exactly what their audience wants or that they have a good grasp of the current market.

Or you can get over that not everyone talks and accepts profanity in their everyday speech.

And I doubt anyone is "twitching" the use of profanity is likely just annoying.

I mean, it's Jim's whole schtick. He uses hyperbole and excessive cursing for attention, and it works.

If you're turned off by profanity and passionate ranting then you probably shouldn't watch Jim Sterling videos.

We have prefixes and suffixes in English but not infixes. Except one. Fucking. Absofuckinglutely. That's how important of a word it is.

MS was better at helping Bungie than Activision when they hit snags.

Well then I guess, you simply contradict yourself basis your other videos, by generalizing and calling the entire lot of game industry executives "fucking idiots".
congrats on derailing the thread with your first post

It's part of "gamer culture," didn't you know?

Most gaming executives are business people with little to no game development experience or even any interest in gaming.

They run their businesses just like any other business: maximize profit while minimizing risk. That means they turn out shitty, run of the mill, cookie cutter product backed by massive advertising.

Of course they're fucking idiots.
